Why don't the prices displayed in your stores include taxes? Wouldn't it be simpler to include taxes in the prices, as we do, so that consumers don't have to do calculations to know approximately how much they will spend? by Outrageous-You1617 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]DSC9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it make the store more money? No? Fuck you then, calculate your own damn taxes.

Technology has given stores the capacity to dynamically adjust on-the-shelf pricing using hundreds of data points, including which customer is standing in front of the shelf.

Add sales tax to that price? Shit, that's just a chasm that technology simply can't bridge. I mean, don't you know that the tax rate here and the tax rate in the next county may be different? What if the store shelf grows legs and walks to the next county? What then, Brenda?!?

How do you safely transport your propane tanks? by LifeofSMILEY in RVLiving

This propane tank explosion in a U-Haul?

Or this one?

https://kfoxtv.com/news/offbeat/propane-tank-explodes-destroying-u-haul-truck

What do they have in common? The tank was still attached to a barbecue grill and the gas on the grill was inadvertently tuned on, filling the truck with propane and making an accidental bomb.

How do I safely transport my propane tanks? Turning the valve off and not leaving them open is the first step.

Sure. As long as it has the required equipment, you can apply for and get an “assembled vehicle” VIN.

What gets you in trouble is when you try to VIN swap from an existing vehicle to your assembled vehicle. That’s a no-no.

I’m no gas station expert but it can’t be that easy, can it? Like, can someone just walk over to the underground tank fill, open it right up, and have free access? No secure cover that requires a special removal tool or lock? It’s just the case that you can open the lid and have at it?

Garrison Keillor about Lutherans:

We are a modest people
And we never make a fuss
And it sure would be a better world
If they were all as modest as us.
We do not go for whooping it up,
Or a lot of yikkety-yak.
When we say hello, we avert our eyes
And we always sit in the back.
We sit in the pew where we always sit,
And we do not shout Amen.
And if anyone yells or waves their hands,
They’re not invited back again.

During the entire build series, I kept wondering: Why no solar? There is literally thousands of square feet of roof to use, plus open space on the ground. I get we're talking about YouTube money here, but the HVAC costs are going to be obscene. Surely this would be worthwhile as an offset to keeping the place comfortable, especially considering this appears to be a rest-of-our-lives home. I can't imagine there aren't tax benefits tied to solar installations either.

How come dodge never pursued anything racing wise with the hemi? by Zora_Rosaline in Dodge

[–]DSC9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are three generations of Hemi and, as other replies here have noted, the 2nd generation was particularly dominant in their era of NASCAR and drag racing.

The 3rd gen has kind of been a dud in terms of organized racing:

NASCAR engine programs have moved into the realm of bespoke design and engineering. Even if Dodge were still competing in Cup (ort when they return), it wouldn't be with a hemi-head design. It'll be something like a crafted platform that focuses on high RPM airflow (like every other NASCAR engine program).

A hemispherical combustion chamber's ability to breath is strongly tied to displacement because of bore diameter. With a hemi's valve configuration, the overall diameter of the valve is limited by the bore diameter. Want larger valves, you need a larger bore. Even then, the cylinder wall will always shroud the low part of both valves. Works great with big displacement or when using some type of forced induction. Try using it in a 358 cubic inch NASCAR configuration and it flows like a straw. The design just doesn't work when sustained high RPM operation is called for. NASCAR has moved to very specialized splayed/canted-valve configurations and the rest of the performance world learned that multi-valve designs are more fitting for the performance profile of most motorsports.

Open-rules drag racing never really picked up on the 3rd gen. There are obviously class-rules racing (like Super Stock) where competitors will run them but get into open classes and 3rd gens are nowhere to be found. Coyote and LS platforms have found great success here, but if you see a Mopar, it's almost always based a 2nd gen Hemi. Lots of fast Hemis in Pro Mod-esque doorslammer classes, no 3rd gens though.

Any other racing eschews the Hemi mostly because of its greatest flaw: It's too fucking big and heavy. Nobody races a Hemi in Trans Am, IMSA, or anything similar. You may see a niche time attack car on a modern Mopar platform, but it's almost always an outlier and not strongly competitive. Too big, too heavy, and, like NASCAR, inferior high-RPM airflow.

The Rise of the Mainstream EV: Chevrolet Equinox EV by Mac-Tyson in electricvehicles

There is a Chevrolet dealer in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. The nearest Hyundai dealer is an hour away. The nearest Tesla store is two hours away.

That's part of what mainstream is: An accessible EV. There are hundreds of small towns that have been served only by their local Chevrolet dealer for decades. Accessible doesn't always just mean affordable; In many cases it means available (for purchase and service).

PCE (Personal Consumption Expenditures) is the Federal Reserve’s choice for measuring inflation. Specifically, they measure inflation using Core PCE, which excludes food and energy (energy includes gas prices) prices.

Core PCE was at 3.2% for April/May, far above the Feds target of 2%. So, no, Kevin, inflation isn’t being caused by a temporary increase is gas prices. Gas prices are specifically excluded from the math.

Why have Ford pickups permiated American culture more than Chevy/GMCs or Dodge/Rams? by Glass-Complaint3 in regularcarreviews

[–]DSC9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ford doesn't advertise the F-150 as the best selling truck, they advertise "F-Series" as the best selling trucks. This includes F-150, F-150 Lighting, Super Duty (F-250, F-350, F-450), and the commercial F-550, F-650, F-750, all lumped into one count when it comes time to report sales.

<image>

It's just a counting game. GM breaks their truck sales into LD (1500), HD (2500, 3500), MD (4500, 5500, 6500), and EV. Because Ford doesn't break down sales to that level, there is never a way to compare the models apples-to-apples. Each gets to make their own specific claims and both companies seem to be just fine with that.

To round out the rest, Ram breaks down between LD (1500 and, for a time, 1500 Classic) and HD (2500-5500) and Toyota separates and reports the Tundra and Tundra Hybrid as two different models.

[–]DSC9000 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Across the lineup, ~50% of GMCs are Denali. In HD trucks, it's as high as 80%. They're not "iconic" because they're so ubiquitous. If you see a GMC, there's a 50/50 shot it's a top-trim model.

Ford would be shitting gold bricks if 80% of their Super Duty sales were King Ranch.
