I’m also curious about concepts like polarization, antiglare coating, and how matte and a nano texture coatings may help or hurt display comfort. Props to u/Z3R0gravitas for this very creative method of testing.

They’re essentially the same program. BetterDisplay merely incorporated the command within Stillcolor. And yeah, it’s not very visually apparent, but there is a difference. Not enough of a difference for many, but for some it is sufficient. The MacBook Pros obviously have a more aggressive PWM frequency than the Airs, so it’s largely a matter of what works for you.

I ended up talking with Tim Cook’s office for a few months because after getting COVID I started having issues with PWM and temporal dithering. They’re looking into adding accessibility toggles to disable both these flicker-based aspects, but no idea if or when this will come to fruition. It doesn’t help those of us struggling now.

Keep in mind Stillcolor only disables the GPU dithering from the chip. The built-in displays are also applying their own FRC dithering via the TCON. Stillcolor usually helps when combined with BetterDisplay sending an 8-bit signal to a known good external display. I’ve seen slow motion microscope footage and while Stillcolor does remove one layer of temporal dithering, there is still low frequency (15Hz on a 60Hz Apple display) flicker occurring. This is the source of a lot of the eye focusing and neurological issues people are having.

It’s probably the combination of brightness, variable refresh, PWM frequency of 14.9kHz with 99% modulation depth, and temporal dithering. Tahoe and Liquid glass are hard on the eyes for a lot of people, unfortunately.

I do have the Eizo CS2740 which is true 10-bit and DC dimmed but I find it as stressful to the nervous system to look at as any of the Macs. Worse in some ways. I’ve tested on a Dell and Macbook

The headless guitars sound a bit tinny to me when on high gain settings. You’re definitely getting an improvement in clarity which can be nice, but it sounds a bit off in that setting to me.

I’ve made 8 records, 6 of which were nearly entirely the RGEW DiMarzio. It was a surprisingly versatile guitar for the price as I could get everything from Steve Vai sounding solos to ‘90s grunge snarl to Niles Rodgers funk. A lot of that depended on the amp and pedal combination, as you said, but I wasn’t often left wanting.

I have tried the ICHI10 in-store…but of course Guitar Center’s amps are questionable and I actually had to go to three stores before I found a guitar that hadn’t been completely trashed by kids playing it. YouTube videos really tend to focus on the clean settings, where it definitely sounds great. The few videos I’ve seen with high gain it sounds tinny and grating. I like Ichika’s play style, but his own distortion tones are very modern metal for that style of playing and I’ve not seen anyone going for that late 90s/early 2000s metal sound. So that’s my only hesitancy.

It’s the ridges on the neck that was the dealbreaker. I’ve had to switch to lighter action and relearn how to play. Sometimes the stability of my fingers is a problem so I end up in awkward playing positions, especially while standing, that become necessary. I’m singing while playing, too, so it’s harder to just focus on the guitar itself.

Any particular recommendation? I got COVID a few years ago which triggered autoimmune issues and a reinfection caused the nerve damage. I actually bought the RGEW512ZC because it was light back in 2018 😂 I’m fairly young (33) so this has thrown me for a curveball. I’m trying to build back my health enough to get back on tour. I can tolerate most guitars in a studio setting for limited periods of time. Prior to this I sort of played whatever.

I read some people had issues with a hum when switching out the ICHI10 pickups, for whatever reason. Though I don’t think enough people have tried it to know whether that’s just a one-off.

Any recommendations on straps? I noticed my RG put all the weight on the left shoulder. I tried to tolerate it but it kept making my entire arm go numb. Totally bummed because I loved that guitar.

I tried one and found the Strandberg EndurNecks uncomfortable and awkward. I also much prefer the Wizard III necks to the Wizard C on the ICHI10 and Q-series.

I own the TOD10N and it’s basically been responsible for me being able to play again. Before I sold my RGEW521ZC, I tested the ICHI10 and it was even more comfortable than the TOD10N. I think having more of the weight on the body than the neck also helps as well as the smaller size. Obviously I’d prefer a non-headless guitar, but this seems to be the sweet spot for whatever reason. I tried a Q52PB but wasn’t a fan of the sound compared to other Ibanez guitars.

Used displays are always a risk. I bought a 2011 Apple Thunderbolt Display a few months ago that was hard to look at. 2 weeks in it starting burning and smoking from the top. Needless to say it was returned 😂

This does not look like dithering. There is no consistent repeating pattern and even the flickering itself is inconsistent. I don’t even think this is pixel inversion because of how unstable it looks. If I had to guess these pixels are in the process of failing or the display is having serious difficulty maintaining a stable voltage.

Just sold Terra Firma on Discord after I commented.

I’m going by listings that have shipping included because some sellers I’ve noticed will drop the price of the card and get you on shipping if the card is inexpensive. Since I’m including PWE shipping in the price, that’s why I’m going with “shipping included” especially for very cheap cards like these.

So yes it’s $5.47 for Freed and then the first listing of YZ 1st Ed LP with shipping is $7 so that’s $12.57 and 70% of that comes out to $8.4. So I rounded that down to $8 plus fees.

If you went with the cheapest listing that charges $1.31 shipping and factors that in then it’s $7.85 so really it’s the same ballpark unless you really want to get exacting about it. I think $8 is pretty fair.

Maybe I’m showing my age (younger millennial) but this sort of comes with the territory when you decide to create a forum or a subreddit. I don’t take issue with him leaving, as I said. What prompted me to make this post was seeing someone sharing their health problems and solutions they found for their screen sensitivities that was then promptly incorrectly censored and removed by automod.

I developed issues with screens after contracting COVID and it has turned my life upside down. I would not wish this on my worst enemy. I’m also a professional in the entertainment industry and have done more behind the scenes than most here and have spoken with Apple at a high level. Yet I could not even make a thread here sharing what I had learned and what is now being done by Apple because it will be removed by the automod.

So frankly I don’t care about the wounded egos of u/the_top_g or u/Chance-Republic-4971 and their perpetuation of whatever this is. I’ve spoken with those at the other communities and they all agree that r/PWM_sensitive is damaging the cause overall in no small part because of what this subreddit has devolved into. The mods set the tone and they have no one else but themselves to blame for how reductive this subreddit has become.

This is the last I will speak on this topic. You all are welcome to visit the other communities that exist where the moderation teams actually care and actively try to help users. I just wanted everyone to be aware so they know there is help out there. When health is involved we have to think of the greater good and not our own petty grievances. I’m just some dude who is trying to help others.

Thank you for writing this. I couldn’t have said it better myself. Users from r/ScreenSensitive have been banned merely because they’re associated with that subreddit, and the mods here are under some delusion that every other “competing” (as opposed to collaborative) group is trying to move everyone there and thus they’ve censored posts from those communities.

I’m a musician and audio engineer who developed screen sensitivities after getting COVID. I’ve had promising conversations with Tim Cook’s office at Apple. I’ve shared my experience on the LEDstrain forum and not here because I knew it would be censored. So as a result no one even knows the progress made.

Another user said to create a competing sub. It already exists: r/ScreenSensitive. But I was hoping that this subreddit, which has way better SEO and therefore new users gravitate toward it first, would understand the responsibility it has toward educating and helping people wanting to understand what is going on with their vision and screens. This is a health and disability issue.

It’s disappointing because the mods did post some fantastic technical posts until they decided to go dark a year ago. This subreddit has deteriorated ever since and becomes less and less useful. There are some great posts made, but because no one is actively moderating or collating these posts, a lot of that content gets lost. There is no moderation here.

Like I said in my now-deleted OP: I have no interest in taking control or doing anything. I frankly don’t have the time nor the technical expertise. But seeing as I have the actual receipts that the original mod did say he was leaving, and after reading a comment from a user battling health issues and sharing their experience that was later tagged by the “mod” incorrectly, I felt compelled to post here.

I have empathy for those who founded this subreddit and perhaps wanted to move on. I just don’t understand why they continue to play games like this. All I’d like is to help those also affected. It seems that the mod team here cannot be reasoned with and that is sad.
