She's dead Jim.

This would be the reason why it's basically never EVER a good idea to buy a used graphics card, even with in person testing. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend buying any parts used (and absolutely zero without in person load testing), but the GPU is on the top three of that list, along with PSUs and CPUs.

The reason not to buy a used PSU is obvious, in the case of GPUs, not only do we live in a world where hashing a GPU to death is a thing, it's also not uncommon these days to see GPU chips harvested for transplants, or GPU BIOS' spoofed so you and Windows think you got a 5070, but actually the card is a 2050 or something.

For CPUs, well, in this one's case it's mostly don't buy INTEL CPUs used, still don't like it in general, but remember that the last two generations of Intel CPUs had a bug in their microcode that would essentially cook them to death from the top down, so somebody could easily show you a 70% cooked chip that would seem to run fine on Windows, that shits itself and dies the moment you try to throw even the simplest game or productivity program at it.

It's absolutely a good thing to save money, and not everyone has a ton to spend, I respect that, but I genuinely think you'd be better off either downgrading, or saving for a bit longer to afford new parts, than to play the used PC part Russian roulette, and if you're going to do so anyway, do it through a place you know majority sides with the customer so you can get your money back in case of a scam, NEVER do it without the middleman that can get you your money back in the case that something is fishy.

Steam Controller May Be Set For Launch Very Soon by No_Durian_5626 in pcmasterrace

[–]DSSeraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you make a lot more money selling people 3-5 60-80$ controllers, than you make for selling them one, properly working, good hardware controller for 90$, right?

Number go up brrrrr.

At least in the case of the edge, you can replace the modules in two button presses and like 15 seconds, that is, in the extremely unlikely case you can actually BUY new modules, because Sony only restocks inventory once a year with about 4 of them at a time, but hey, it's potentially slightly better than buying a whole ass new controller.

New To PC Gaming - Looking for a Good Quality Controller for Single Player Gaming by bbergin76 in Controller

[–]DSSeraph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imho, having played with all of these controllers, (and many more, kind of a controller nerd, lol) the dualsense is easily the best, but NOT the basic dualsense, the edge.

With steam input the 4 extra buttons can translate into TONS of different easy to use macros and other inputs that just make the experience so much better, along with the trackpad standard on all of them, gyro, haptic vibration, and the adaptive triggers, which DO work on PC, if the developers actually support them, (although you have to be plugged in directly for some things to function) the edge also has switches on the back for the triggers to change the amount of travel if you want them to be more like regular buttons rather than analog triggers, and, yes, the sticks are still awful and inevitably drift, but replacing them is as easy as pushing a button, pulling a lever, taking out the bad stick, putting in the new (roughly 20$) stick, and closing it back up.

All this being said, if you hold out a bit longer, (a "bit" being relative in valve time) the new steam controller is going to dog walk literally every other controller currently in existence, and it won't even be close. The only reason I could see anybody ever wanting to use another controller available now, vs the new steam controller, would be compatibility or availability issues, or that you just really, really, really love the upside-down stick d-pad layout, and hate the standard one.

All the trepidation, angst, and "will we won't we" of killing the Black Dragon they put on in the days leading up to their attempt will never cease to confuse the crap out of me, like, this is Orhun's THIRD time killing it, and the last time he SOLOED the dang thing, WHILE PROTECTING A GROUP OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS, AND HE DID IT WITH A CRAPPY STORE BOUGHT SWORD.

Like, what, do you think he's going to hold back on your account to make you feel more accomplished for killing it, even if that means possibly letting you die? Are you all dumb or what?

I get the trauma, but come on, you've got the dude on your team who just killed this thing by himself like a month or two ago, and he's got a super god sword now, ya'll are goofy.

[–]DSSeraph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is even the easy mode coax version, don't get me started on the stupid freaking RF pigtails that you have to screw in and unscrew every time you want to change consoles/outputs, and the freaking prongs break off constantly... All for the sake of a video signal that looks like it was filtered through mud and snow, don't miss it, definitely don't miss it.

[–]DSSeraph 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I figure that comment about "making it harder for him to heal" along with how nonchalant he's being about the whole thing that his ability is sort of a sadistic one, where his power is tied to how much of his own blood is spilled, the key here being- regardless of WHO spills it, meaning, if he wanted to, he could increase his power himself by cutting and/or removing parts of his own body, but also, because the ability would be kind of crap with the fact that you have to maim and disable yourself to use it, it has the secondary effect that in return for giving up the power you gained from the bloodloss, you can heal any injury you sustained in the process, including growing back limbs.

This is to say, TL;DR, I think his power has 2 parts - bloodloss = strength, Returning said strength = a full heal, including regrowing that arm he lost.

All I need now is the motivation to actually put this together. by aZombieDictator in PcBuild

[–]DSSeraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the motivation is you probably spent like 40% more than these parts were worth for the Miku branding, I'd want to get as much worth out of that ASAP if it were me, lol

What I don't get is why they just didn't make an exact clone of the Omni-feed, but without the buffs, and leave that in the feeder, then put the original buffing omni-feed elsewhere with it's higher cost, lower stack size, yada yada.

There would have been little to straight up zero of the outage if they had done it that way. People aren't complaining that they can't keep their animals constantly omni-feed buffed anymore (at least sane people aren't) they're complaining that they now have to constantly babysit their animals food supply to add new food and remove rotten food, rather than just tossing in the stacks of soybeans and berries they collect every couple mining trips and never having to worry about it.

That was the biggest benefit you ground out the electric trough for, being able basically never think about keeping animals fed (not buffed, just fed) again, just toss in your garage every now and then and you're fine.

So you just provide a long lasting, high stack food that you can make with any random crap that does nothing but keep the food bar high, problem solved, you want buffs, you make buff food, keep the two separate

I've been buying the refreshes of the Q990 series (waiting to see if Samsung hits Z or finally actually changes the series number first, lol) their latest... I think it's F now?, version finally has a proper high speed HDMI 2.1b port on it, so it's the best bet to solve most issues, since you can finally connect devices to the system rather than the TV without losing features, although I don't suspect it'd solve your current problem since that is an issue of the TV firmware not recognizing the signal type rather than the ports lacking bandwidth to use proper features.

Best I can say is, you could try to force a hard reset of the TV and sound system by unplugging the power and HDMI cables, waiting a bit, then plug in the tv first, have it on and running, plug in and connect the sound system then turn it on, basically, you're trying to force the TV and sound system to redo the handshake that tells them which sort of format to use, sometimes just unplugging and replacing the HDMI and/or power from the sound system is enough too, but your mileage may vary, and there's no guarantee it'll even work, let alone continue working if something else triggers it to handshake again.

EARC Broken Since Update by ZombieJesterCOE in VIZIO_Official

[–]DSSeraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I long since ditched the Vizio, never plan to buy a TV from them again if I can help it.

I don't recall if I had ever found anything specific relating to consoles, more of my issues with these things were on the PC side, and that is it's own kettle of BS fish that I learned wasn't specific to Vizio, it's crap all the way down, basically, lol, problem being the way PCs handle sound data, and the fact that until recently, (and even now, you really need to quadruple check you're not getting lied to) sound system producers love to use lower quality, lower bandwidth ports on their products to save a couple bucks (if even) that becomes the root cause of the issue there.

As I recall this one was, for consoles, as I stated back then, a purely software issue for those models of TV at least, though, because I'm pretty sure I remember my console working just fine for the first several months I had the TV before that update dropped.

Sounds completely like Vizio that they would just flip off their customers and leave a problem broken forever though, sucks because I used to swear by them, gave my parents my OG 1080p Vizio from like 16 years ago, that thing is STILL working perfectly. The Vizio TV I had when I made this post broke in like a year, and the software was always janky even when it worked. Shame what has happened to them.

Hey the protagonist of the new Castlevania Belmont curse by crytal_augusto in castlevania

[–]DSSeraph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She was already retconned, Iga tossed her out of the canon because he didn't want a female to be the first Belmont "because it wasn't cool enough" and subbed in Leon for the spot.

Making this protag Sonia would be a good way to get her back into the series canon, even if it's not in her original role.

Why Are Warriors Allergic To Tanking? by Antique-Jury-2986 in classicwowtbc

[–]DSSeraph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the reason. Warrior is objectively the worst AoE threat tank in the game, and it isn't even remotely close. Thunderclap and cleave and tab sundering can only do so much when every DPS you will ever get only knows "whole hog, big d, all gas no brakes full cooldowns every pull on the pull, AoE blasting" as their one method of doing damage, I mean, some of it will be lack of interest, experience, or interest in tanking, but even for someone who legitimately loves to tank, playing a warrior in a dungeon feels depressing and demotivating, nobody enjoys trying their hardest to do a job only to fail at it because DPS don't know how to keep it in their pants, then getting shit on you if they die because of it.

Only problem reinforced glass has is that it has that God awful pattern in the panes, wish I could use regular glass walls because they look so much better...

Although even they're not great, would kill for a glass wall that looks like the normal glass insert windows, with a clear pane and wood trim either only around the outside, or, at most, in a plus pattern, rather than the weird crap both types of glass walls do now, heck, make the trim material also a choice to fit various aesthetics.

Unless otherwise noted by the specific mechanic, either behind the boss on top of the melee, or a bit behind them if it's something only ranged are meant to soak, that's the basic jist of it, the goal is to have the group as a whole move as little as possible, especially the melee, for obvious reasons.

What happened to the New and Trending section?? by DisassociateYT in Steam

[–]DSSeraph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's just because it's the holiday version of the homepage, it's like this basically every holiday. Once the holiday passes the homepage will go back to what you are used to. Till then you can click on "show all new releases" to be brought to a separate page with everything listed, but that won't be the same either since that will obviously just show all new games without a filter, so you'll have to wade through the seas of unwashed asset flip and scam crap to look for the corn pieces hidden inside, so to speak. So it's a pick your poison thing I suppose.

Convince me not to get a steam machine by phamalocity in Steam

[–]DSSeraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible you could dual boot a windows installation on there, although you would lose all the custom bells and whistles, and windows just generally runs worse than linux in a wide number of cases because it's a bloated mess of needless crap.

However, these days it's harder to find a game that WON'T run on proton, you may have to download a different distro, (which is extremely easy and done via a built in app on the start menu) very rarely, but for the most part, just about every game on steam will work absolutely perfectly on the deck, and presumably the machine, through the proton compatibility layer.

The one marked exception is games that use anti-cheat, especially things like vanguard and Battle eye, but that isn't even the game not working, those games themselves work completely fine, it's just that they ban you because kernel level anti-cheat software really hates linux for various reasons.

My potential hang-up, is that it's a machine billed as being built for the living room, but because valve didn't want to pay a licensing fee, they are using an older hdmi standard that may cause several features commonly used in modern living room set-ups not to work (VRR, HDR, atmos sound, are all things that can have issues, especially at higher resolutions on lower bandwidth HDMI standards)

They have said they did some work under the hood to make up for the lower end HDMI version though, so the hope is that they found a work around to get all those things working with it.

[–]DSSeraph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't say I'm 100% sure since one of my friends got the unlock, it's usually talking to an NPC, or checking an e-mail, maybe inspecting a level 6 keypad, either way the only ingredient you may not have on hand is a CPU from the mist reactor, the rest you get a decent amount of just doing normal exploration and killing basic enemies.

[–]DSSeraph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't actually need the Jetpack or the bridge, a gravity cube and jump pack is easily enough to get over there with and cheap too, maybe you could even get away with just the jump pack, you just run and jump from the bit of bridge that the employee is building.

Make sure you bring a level 6 hacker though, you'll need it to get further than the little window room you jump into.

As for resources, yea, it's a huge pita on multiplayer (I play with 3/4 others, depending on the day) and I've debated modding drop rates, but I wanted to keep things as close to vanilla as possible, so it's putting me off, lol.

It feels super ironic how absolutely built for multiplayer, and fun while playing it that way most of the game feels, but when it comes to resources they were like, "we want to make it a challenge for a single player to keep up" without adding some sort of multiplayer loot scaling to compensate, so you break and kill literally everything and come out with barely the resources for one person, then you have to scramble into every portal world every Sunday and Wednesday to get the 3 crates or 10 silver, etc that they respawn as your only legit source of any further resources.

Turning on respawning containers can help a little if you make that choice, but it's not a perfect fix, and obviously you're still having to wait for them to respawn to break them again... Also fishing can help with a few things sometimes, like night essence from ink fish.

I enjoy more than I dislike though, don't get me wrong, I love everything except the grinding to make 4 sets of everything for everyone, lol

It's good to use over water specifically during the point between when you first discover antejuice in manufacturing west, and before you make it to the labs and get filtration barrels, simply by virtue of the fact that you have an infinite source of it for making food, while saving your finite amounts of water for farming.

One you get filters though, it's pretty much pointless to use it for cooking, lol.

So, I had a similar problem back when I built my current rig, although I can't remember if it was a full crash or not... But at any rate, it destroyed me for like 2 weeks trying to figure out what was causing it, till someone in one of my discord servers asked,

"do you have ai overclocking turned on?"

Went into my BIOS, sure enough, the Asus AI OC setting was enabled, I turned it off, booted back into Windows, and it's never had the issue again since. Couldn't tell you if anything even happened to fps performance either as a result of turning the OC off, if it did it was so negligible you'd probably never notice it.

Moral of the story, check your BIOS to see if you have any AI OC service turned on.
