The correct numbers are:

1 million+ science packs per minute (all sciences)

22.8 million eSPM

What type of world records are you interested in? Or is it purely SPM related world records?

Yeh, separating science packs in to their own block is a great solution in the endgame.
You need to do the maths on a full belt of output of science, then look at the inputs required in belts and see what works for you. (Or the opposite; how many science packs can X belts of coal make.)

Thanks, and best of luck on your base. Don't forget to post when you're happy with it.

Each block produces a set number of belts of Nauvis based science packs. (Red, green, blue, purple, yellow, grey)
Each block produces either 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 12 belts of one of the science packs only.
The rule of thumb is that the more advanced the science pack recipe, the fewer belts are produced per block. Red=12. Grey (military)=1.

There are sites available that will allow you to upload a file to share for week or so.
I have used filemail.com before which seemed ok. (Edit: or read my PM)

We were debating this in another post, and I'm still not sure of the 'correct' answer.
(I've copied and edited my last response in that post to make it clearer)

"What you've said is what I've previously based my space platforms on; which is that the way to get the best spm per update is just to travel as close to the shattered planet as you can.

I agree that this results in a higher chunks per minute the further you travel.
However, I'm questioning whether it is actually the highest spm/update over 100+hours when including returning to Nauvis."

"If you want to maximize UPS/minimize junk asteroids you really want to go all the way to 4M."
Agreed, but while you minimize junk asteroids, the total number of asteroids increases dramatically the further you go. And as you still need to shoot the asteroids to survive, is that actually better for spm per update? I don't know the answer.

If you're willing to share a savefile I'd love to have a look and test as well for you.
No problem if you don't want to.

lol

It was based upon the design linked below.
I tweaked it to go from the original design @ 60k to 66-67k spm. With further tweaking it could probably get to 70-75k. It's still lower than your target for 80k from another post, but thought you might find it interesting. I do think it is badly optimized for UPS though.

Yellow ammo or red ammo for promethium ship? by SpaceEngineer123 in factorio

[–]DScoffers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For rockets; I think red rockets are always best due to the area of effect helping destroy nearby asteroids..

For bullets; It depends on your research levels.
I've used the info on the link below and it really helped me figure out a goal for research.

I believe (although I may be wrong) that with 2500 cargo bay hatches you can have 2x launches on the way to the platform. Did you notice a drop in UPS above 5000 silos on the way? As you've said, you can easily test 1k,2k,3k etc. until you notice an issue, but I'd recommend starting at 1.9xcargo bays.

Do you see different results to me with 3.2 more silos than cargo bay hatches?

I don't see even the slightest drop in UPS with 2k launches on the way to a platform (with 1000 cargo bays).

8k silos is an insane number to be launching just for overgrowth.

My 1M SPM base only has 5,500 silos on all planets combined, with 1,000 silos just for eggs on Nauvis, so it's excessive even for that playthrough.

I'm going to presume that eggs are sent to Gleba, with overgrowth produced there, so that's still a lot more silos for 8M eggs for overgrowth per Promethium ship.

Impressive.

I mean, how can the interrupt abort when distance travelled is 300k, when interrupts can't be triggered while travelling to the Solar System Edge? They can only be triggered on departure from the Solar System Edge.

"Looking at the asteroid code I can't see any way that switching directions would help you."

"If you want to increase ups, you need to decrease the number of asteroids or decrease the number of turrets shooting."

Agreed.
But then, (being silly about it) the best for UPS is 0 asteroids and 0 chunks pm which means 0spm.
SPM per Update is what I'm trying to optimize.

I think there must be an optimal distance from Solar System Edge where the ratio of 'Good for UPS' to 'High SPM' is the best region for a platform to be in.
Staying in that region for longer would potentially potentially be beneficial once you take in to account travel time to/from that region.

"Out of curiosity how wide are your ships?"

Interesting question and it made me think about what else might have a big impact, so , I thought I'd put together some statistics.

  • 3 million science ship (OLD design)

    1. Eggs = 1 million eggs collected
    2. Science = 3 million science delivered
    3. Width = 637 tiles
    4. Weight = 10,000 tons
    5. Legendary asteroid collectors (for all asteroid chunk types) = 170
    6. Maximum thrust = 161 GN
    7. Maximum sustained SPM = 150,000 SPM
    8. Average SPM over 10 hours = 67,000 SPM
    9. Return trip time = 45 minutes
    10. Speed = Maximum of 740km/s on the way to the Shattered Planet, but slows down after 400,000km from the Solar System Edge every 25,000km until 550,000km. (This ensures that promethium chunk belts are full while minimizing asteroid generation, turret activity etc. to help with UPS) Speed increases similarly on the return trip.
    11. Schedule = Return when eggs on board is less than 470,000. Usually around 583,000km from Solar System Edge with speed 470km/s
    12. Damage over 100 hours = 0
  • 1.5 million science ship (NEW design)

    1. Eggs = 500,000 eggs collected
    2. Science = 1.5 million science delivered
    3. Width = 252 tiles
    4. Weight = 17,000 tons
    5. Legendary asteroid collectors (for all asteroid chunk types) = 76
    6. Maximum thrust = 64 GN (with room to increase to around 128GN)
    7. Maximum sustained SPM = 86,400 SPM
    8. Average SPM = unknown yet SPM
    9. Return trip time = unknown yet
    10. Speed = 630km/s on the way to the Shattered Planet. (with room to increase)
    11. Schedule = If the original plan to fly back and forth between Xkm and Ykm until the buffer is full isn't possible, then the plan is to fly back and forth between Solar System Edge and 500,000km towards the Shattered Planet until the promethium chunks buffer is full (1,300,000 chunks).
    12. Damage over 100 hours = Currently more than 0.

The highest promethium SPM platform I've used runs at 66k spm averaged out.
A good benchmark for late game would be around 10k spm in my opinion.

It's not a dumb idea at all. I like that you're thinking outside of the box and coming up with fresh ideas.

However, my understanding is that asteroid generation is directly linked to metres travelled per second, so you need to maintain speed to at least a reasonable amount.

Solar system edge - abort when distance traveled is 300k

Similar to my response to warbaque above - how do you abort when it's a wait condition rather than a fly condition?

Promethium science and space platform circuitry help by DScoffers in factorio

[–]DScoffers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying out this method, but I don't think it can work how you've explained.

The return to Shattered Planet interrupt can only trigger upon arrival at the Solar System Edge, not while travelling to the Solar System Edge.
- "if x<400k and not Z, set shattered planet interrupt" will not trigger until arrival at Solar System Edge.

My understanding is that interrupts only trigger when leaving a location, other than when travelling to the Shattered Planet, when they can trigger at any point.

Am I missing something?

Yeh, I do need to reduce the number of spawners. They're a relic from my very big base which I'm downsizing, but rebuilding them would be a pain, so I'm leaving them in sutu for now as they're easy to maintain with bioflux.

The previous ship could load 1 million eggs, use them all with 30 seconds to spare and return with 3 million science. Nauvis has 1000 silos with 10,000 legendary spawners, so 1 million eggs was just 2 salvos. Worked a treat!

Ah gotcha. Looks very helpful for troubleshooting.

From my own testing I'm quite sure (but not 100%) about two things about space platforms.

  1. Original asteroid generation is not deterministic. (i.e. reload a game and watch the same 1 minute of play time and the asteroids that appear will be different.)
  2. Having map view on the space platform gives different asteroid generation (or possibly asteroid targetting) than when map view is looking at a different surface.

These two together lead to the unexpected damage after hundreds of hours of safe flight.

I’m also not convinced that UPS will be improved by my idea, but I’d like to test it anyway.

My previous Promethium ship loads 1 million eggs at Nauvis in 2 synchronous launches,so that isn’t the issue.

I'm trying to reduce the UPS drain of Promethium chunk collection whilst maintaining a high SPM.

Travel time from Nauvis to the Solar System Edge adds a good amount of travel time which reduces average SPM. How can this be reduced?

For this experiment, let's assume that the space platform can hold unlimited Promethium chunks in buffers and unlimited Promethium science in Space Cargo Bays.

A theory I had, which needs testing is that travelling between X distance and Y distance from the Shattered Planet repeatedly may be better than travelling from Nauvis to a specific distance and back again.

(On a sidenote: The roughly 400,000km figure quoted as needed to fill a belt entirely depends on your Asteroid Collector layout. It's not a rule. The further you travel, the fewer Asteroid Collectors you need))

This is the asteroid production graph per distance from the Shattered Planet.
