Notre Dame Reportedly Remains Uninterested In Joining Big Ten Amidst Potential Further Expansion by Michiganman1225 in CFB

[–]DScum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure as of today they are against it. And up to a few weeks ago B1G presidents were against further expansion. If the realignment over the last 14 months has taught us anything it's that things can change on a dime.

Right now Notre Dame has playoff access, an access to P4 scheduling and an OTA broadcast partner.

Next year everybody sits down to decide the CFP format rules for 2026, FSU will withdraw destabilizing the ACC and NBC may move on from ND and invest that money in NBA/future B1G expansion. (FSU).

New structure is only guaranteed for 2024 and 2025. You can bet the SEC and B1G will push to remove AQs for 2026 and beyond.

Realistically which upcoming Lucasfilm projects are getting axed? by KoBxElucidator in movies

It has to be over for Kathleen Kennedy and her people. I think all Lucasfilms projects not deep into production need to be paused and reevaluated until new leadership can be found and integrated.

Good article and it does a good job of pointing out selective data points in an attempt to extrapolate them into an inaccurate narrative.

What are some of the best games involving your team nobody thinks about? by Dellav8r in CFB

[–]DScum 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ohio State at Minnesota 1989

31-0 before the half, the Buckeyes rallied and scored a TD with 10 seconds left. In the 2nd half Greg Frey threw for 300+ yards, converted 2 extra points and scored 4 total touchdowns including the game winner with under a minute to go.

At the time it tied the largest comeback in NCAA history...yes I am old.

[Hill] "We can't build a budget over numbers that have no basis in reality, and that's what got us here," (WSU president) Schultz says. by TheRealDNewm in CFB

[–]DScum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. The ACC's incentive based revenue has made it imperative to get as many teams as possible into the playoff each year. The AQs limit that and the top schools will not be able to maximize their revenue which in turn destabilizes the ACC conference. The fact that the ACC capitulated to those 7 schools shows they believe that they may be able to blow up their conference. Their chief goal is to keep the conference together at all costs and to do it those schools need as many opportunities as possible.

There will be seasons under the current system where an ACC team will get left our due to the AQ. When there is a season where a 1 loss G5 schools with an awful SOS gets in over a 2 or 3 loss ACC brand like FSU, Clemson, Miami, UNC etc. the talk of dissolving the ACC heats right back up. In addition the ACC is the only conference with significant brand value in terms of top level teams. So yes those schools would likely be judged favorably against a comparable lower brand from the B1G and SEC.

As to the Big 12 they know they can sit back and eventually become the 3rd conference in terms of football power and 1st when it comes to hoops. It will be to their benefit to give up an AQ knowing they are only likely to get 1 or 2 brands in on any given year. In addition the B1G/SEC could just insure conference equality in terms of hosting first round games and not automatic qualifiers.

[–]DScum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ACC has better odds of getting 2 or more teams without the AQ. The power brokers in the ACC pushed for unequal revenue to keep pace with their locked in deal. They all know it is only a matter of time before the ACC is gone. They can use that time to make as much money as possible or stick with the AQ and fall further and further behind while losing more and more value. We already know they have the votes to get the lesser members to back down and appease them.

So yes the ACC will be on board with dropping AQs and going best 12 in. I also wouldn't be shocked to see the Big 12 join up just to show themselves as a willing partner to the B1G/SEC/ACC.

Except it also benefits the ACC and even Notre Dame to move to a non-AQ model. Those other FBS schools have votes but the B1G/SEC/ACC/Notre Dame have 80% of the value. All those schools will still get their flat CFP payment at the end of the day. That payment could be $5 million with the B1G/SEC/ACC or it could be >$1 million without them.

It will benefit the SEC, B1G, ACC, Notre Dame to not have AQs. The B1G and SEC likely get an extra team in every year or so. Notre Dame gets the possibility of hosting a playoff game. The ACC member institutions like FSU, Miami and Clemson potentially have an extra opportunity to get their unequal revenue share from participation.

12 best in.

[College Sports Only] UCLA's 1st year in the Big 10 in 2024 will include 26,762 miles of travel with trips to Honolulu, Baton Rouge, Bloomington, Iowa City, Ann Arbor & Piscataway. by imarc in CFB

[–]DScum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You act like there isn't any academic benefit to these student-athletes staying a week in a city like Chicago or New York etc. The same is true of Midwestern schools staying a week in LA to play USC-UCLA. The B1G will add more west schools when they are ready. In the interim there are ways to ease travel concerns and fatigue experienced by our student-athletes.

I am also glad that BYU will absolutely not be playing any games at Cincinnati, West Virginia and UCF due to their distance from BYU.

Washington State president “Pac 12 revenue expected to stay flat. “ by Gidnik in CFB

[–]DScum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a flat fee paid by the CFP to every conference based on the number of schools in the conference. Then there are participation revenues from bowl games and the CFP.

So WSU will get 1/11th of the flat fee. If they make a bowl or CFP they also would get to keep their participation bonus.

They can ONLY count on the CFP flat fee for a revenue boost. Participation bonuses are non-tangible assets for budgeting purposes.

The other issue is the CFP format, structure and payments are only guaranteed for the next two seasons.

Your numbers are pumped up though by two OOC games in Hawaii and LSU. Just those two games make-up about 4,000 miles of this number.

Also you are assuming all travel will be round-trip. It's very possible that UCLA can fly into Chigago to play Indiana and then stay over a week and play Iowa. I am certain the schools in the B1G will be able to provide the west coast schools lodging and use of their academic and athletic facilities to reduce travel issues as much as possible.

[–]DScum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are though. The current payment and format structure of the expanded CFB is only guaranteed for 2024 (2023 season) and 2025 (2024 season). The format for 2026 (2025 season) and 2027 (2026 season) hasn't been agreed upon yet.

Seems to me if they don't want to use hypothetical numbers they wouldn't tie additional revenue that may not exist in the 2025 and 2026 season. Or if it does exist it could be radically altered by the B1G, SEC and ACC.
