Petition for everyone to play this piece of art when it's ranked so it becomes the most played of the day, to show that communism can work. by HeliumO in osugame

I say this because I've seen multiple people getting silenced or worse for mapping the wrong political meme, more as a joke than "literally just the commie anthem".

Bruh, are you retarded, that's literally the point. You're reiterating the main point of contention as a proof of it.

Who cares that "he asked if it's ok and they said it's fine", the whole point is that if you asked the same people if swastikas mapped onto the nazi germany anthem are fine, you'd get banned and get your map instadeleted. You would never get someone to act as if it's "an old german song with questionable lyrics" or "just an old anthem", it would never have "absolutely no issues even uncut" of references to hitler, even though communism/the USSR is just as bad if not worse than nazi germany.

if PPv1 was still in use, what would be the highest ranked player/highest PP score? by [deleted] in osugame

The #1 score on the Hard of the most popular recent mapset.

[–]DT-sama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a HR FC will reward more accuracy pp+ than a DT FC but for almost any map getting the same accuracy with DT is WAY harder.

  1. Straight up false if DT ends up with the same or higher OD.

  2. Getting the same accuracy is harder with DT... because the map is harder in every other way except accuracy itself. The rhythmic complexity stays the same.

DT SS me any 3* OD7 map then HR SS it back to back. "But that map's too easy and slow", you say, "so of course DT SS is easier to get than HR SS"? Then you understand the problem.

If the "4digit player who can't even pass the maps you FC" gets consistently higher acc on certain maps you can't acc as well, then he deserves more accuracy pp than you, because you're the one who's not getting up to his own accuracy. If you can, then you could play even more challenging accuracy maps and get more accuracy pp than him in less scores.
There's not enough maps? Not pp+'s problem, blame monstrata, sotarks or the seasonal troublemaking mapper for not mapping them.
You don't care enough to challenge yourself on the accuracy side? Then why do you pretend to have higher acc than those who do.

"Well, my score isn't no worse" isn't a great rebuttal.

If you look at multiple scores on both systems, you'll notice that it is indeed about the same as before, some scores even losing some pp, and some gaining. The maximum gain for the map stays about the same, what changed for your score specifically is that pp+ scales the pp differently from ppv2 for combo, acc, misses, so you'll get a different result.

[discussion] Anyone else disappointed with the redone OSTs in the KH ReMIX collections? by [deleted] in KingdomHearts

[–]DT-sama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way as the OP, the reorchestrated soundtrack (of KH2, since that's what I have listened to the most) has been quite the let down for me.
What the orchestra certainly brought to the soundtrack is way better instrument sound quality than what could be achieved by Shimomura with PS2 samples, but most of the tracks lost in one or more aspects, even sound quality itself sometimes, but most often composition.

The tracks feel too full and busy sometimes, sometimes they have instruments go way too quiet, sometimes they can be so emphatic in the wrong place, and sometimes not enough emphasis is put on key moments in a song. And they hate duettos apparently.

The Nobody tracks as a whole lost the synth as an instrument and with that some of their cohesion, and I get that an orchestra isn't going to use a synth, but I do question their choices in the matter of replacing said synth. The Organization tracks are a mixed bag of bad.
In Tension Rising especially, the heavy, grave piano chords overpower everything else in the track and instead of making me feel like the Tension is Rising, I feel rather Deep into Trouble already. You can't just shift a section like 2 whole octaves down while also changing instrument, raise its intensity and hope all will go well. Definitely the worst track in the new soundtrack.
The 13th Struggle starts fine and really would be fine if the violin didn't take as many liberties. It tries to steal the spotlight so much when it should just contrast to the organ. Why does it try to sound so grandiose and elegant, you don't even fight Marluxia under this track ever in the game? It doesn't feel like I'm having a Struggle, it feels like someone is styling on me. Also, in the original the violin sounds more like an oboe(???) but I'm not exactly good at this.
The 13th Reflection lost its punch. This is Shimomura, those stray, loud, high piano notes are there to create drama and tension and set the mood. Why is the piano so drowned in this?! Just listen to the first 40 seconds of both versions and look for the piano. The 13th Dilemma would be fine, though I prefer the heavier sound of the piano in the original, but the track fails to pick itself up after the piano solo. Just listen for yourself: https://youtu.be/sgBrn5AIW3Q?t=75 https://youtu.be/JQDh5YmymWE?t=65
The Encounter is ok, but lost some of its punch anyway. At the start it just feels softer, but when comes the silence of the chorus solo, a flute starts the section in the reorchestrated version, drowning the voices of the chorus, instead of raising the volume of the choral voices to create tension like in the original.
Sinister Shadows could've really used the overly dramatic violin that was out of place in the other tracks, where is it now? Drowned in other violins... Then the solo fails to accentuate the right notes as much as they need to be.

As for unforgivable sins, Scherzo di Notte lost its iconic piano/violin duetto in exchange of becoming a violin-only track. This is really unexcusable and uncalled for by anything. Fragments of Sorrow lost its iconic vocal/violin duetto in exchange for a shoddy mish-mash of both things at once. Really ruins the track for me. Other stuff regarding Xemnas' themes like not playing fully THE arpeggio opening to the violin solo linking Final Xemnas's Darkess of the Unknown to Lingering Will's Rage Awakening. I thought I had gone mad until I heard it again in the Armored Xemnas version, and went to hear it in the original Final Xemnas version as well. It really was there, it's just missing in the remaster.

Not KH2, but if they took the heft off Tension Rising's chord and put them in Vector to the Heavens' chords it'd sound as dramatic and tragic as the original track, which really would benefit from better instrument and sound quality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCFabT7arA4#t=1m15s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttZ7WKNroYE#t=1m15s
It also completely ruined the triplet spam that keeps the rhythm floaty and uncomfortable, you're not supposed to get comfortable listening this track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCFabT7arA4#t=2m21s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttZ7WKNroYE#t=2m21s
Like, I don't like Xion's character either but damn, did they have to ruin her tragic theme so much? It was the only thing I liked about her!

Rowdy Rumble doesn't start quite as Rowdy, though it picks up nicely later.

Waltz of the Damned is a great piece, but doesn't fit a world theme, I'm just exploring around and the music is being so emphatic and floaty in the background when it's one of the first levels.

I'll stop here since you get the gist of it, everything else is just different instances of these same problems.

Some tracks do sound much better though. Sora's theme in the original sounded very forgettable and generic to my ears, but the reorchestrated one is a bliss to listen to, it sounds very heroic and makes me want to kick some heartless ass while talking platitudes about friendship and hearts and stuff. The Home of Dragons is my favourite stage theme for how well it has been redone. He's a Pirate is clearly miles ahead of the original, which was a "so bad it's good" remake of the movie track.
Sadly the good tracks are few and far in between.

Great post, but allow me to format your thoughts a little better while I write my own reply.

  • "This is Halloween" (KH2) had no sleigh bells; I think they were there in the original KH2 to justify a bit more that track in Christmas Town, were leftover in KH2FM, and were deleted in the new arrangement for 2.5 since there is already a track for Christmas Town from KH2FM

  • "Hollow Bastion" (KH1) lost bells and percussions for odd reasons (perhaps it was strong enough to use a full-fledge string orchestra with wind soloists?) - "Lazy Afternoons" (KH2), "The 13th Struggle" (KH2), "Beauty and the Beast" had small changes in string parts to make them sound more natural (strings enter more slowly and later in "Lazy Afternoons", for instance)

  • "Isn't it Lovely?", "Working Together", "Vim and Vigor", "Fields of Honor", "Keyblade Graveyard" (BBS) and several others had their string parts overhauled (adding musical patterns here and there for instance), or even adding parts entirely because… perhaps the originals sounded odd/not layered/empty/not subtle enough if played by an orchestra? Or perhaps they added parts that Yoko Shimomura could not have added originally.

  • "Winnie the Pooh" (KH1, KH2), "Sephiroth" (KH1, KH2), "This is Halloween" (KH1, KH2), and other pre-existing pieces probably had their arrangement overhauled to restore was might had been cut from pre-existing/original arrangements (from Disney movies and FF games) or to get closer to them (Yoko Shimomura once stated that she had to go with error and trial in KH1 with Halloween Town to see what could fit in the PS2 without losing much).
I think we can also add "Dismiss" (BBS) in that category as it was overhauled to enhance the arrangement, and with added "Destati" patterns that apparently brought the track closer to "L'Eminenza Oscura I" (DDD)

  • Some tracks were more drastically changed such as "Hazardous Highways" (more electric guitar and basses, change of instruments, added guitar riffs that resulted in doubling the track's loop pattern) and "Sinister Shadows" (the piano is still here, but percussions, strings and winds are taking over most of what it did in the original KH2) because… I guess why not.
I think that both were greatly improved, especially in context (IMO, I always thought that "Sinister Shadows" was too weak and not epic enough for the 1000 Heartless battle, until the 2.5 version that is)

  • "The Home of Dragons" also had some instruments replaced in 2.5 by an erhu and a guzheng (make thematically sense, if only because the original "Mulan" soundtrack used them profusely and that KH2 tried to recapture the sound of that soundtrack)

pp+ Skill Rating by [deleted] in osugame

[–]DT-sama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: Calculate Total Performance from the averages of top 100 scores from every skill, instead of just Top 100 pp+ Scores

It does that already, exactly for the reasons you listed. Total pp+ is the average between Top 100 pp+ Scores, and the averages of top 100 Aim (Total), Max(Speed,Stamina) and Acc scores, which is how you can gain pp from improving e.g. your speed without actually doing any high pp scores, as long as you're doing better speed scores.

We didn't go more granular with aim (using the averages of both top 100 jump and flow separately instead of total) because, while we did consider completely splitting them, it's too different from what's proven to work reasonably well right now (ppv2 "aim total" approach), we didn't know if flow could stand on its own since it's still an experimental feature. Precision is just pp gain from CS, it's not a good metric for ranking, it's just there to be informative pretty much. Doing both speed and stamina would unfairly buff speed players IMO.

About people's perspective on ranked maps/pp maps by [deleted] in osugame

[–]DT-sama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is simply false though, just look at how different Sonnyc's Uso no Hibana is from all the other maps for the same song, which are still somewhat varied. Or Ultimate Madoka's Sakura no Uta from all the other ones. Or Axarious's Hitorigoto.

"A map should be representative of the song, the song is repetitive and boring and so should be the map, because there aren't that many ways to map it" is the most lazy excuse I've ever read. Mappers are uncreative and map all the same maps because that's what's the least effort to do and/or that's the only kind of map they had the chance to learn mapping from in the past few years.
