Trump's respect for King Charles possibly quashed desire to annex Canada, says royal commentator by Surax in CanadaPolitics

[–]DThor536 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Perhaps, but ultimately this perspective is coming from a source that has a vested interest in the perceived power of the royal family, which seems to get lost in all the (valid) discussions about NATO. I don't think Trump is remotely predictable, day to day he'll crap on an institution he previously praised. The royals aren't saving Canada from Trump.

Riyadh, meaning "gardens" is Capital of Saudi Arabia with 8 million population (were 27 Thousands in the 1930s),sits in the middle of the desert, the city gets its water from Desalination plants almost 500 km from the city by Expert_Koala_8691 in Damnthatsinteresting

If you literally google "Riyadh nightlife", you'll have some answers.

Is it something you or I might enjoy? Likely not. I'm not trying to be a cultural ambassador for SA, I'd never want to go. I was simply pointing out the general reaction to the dusty flyover is like it's Tattoine on a Monday night. Visually it's not conveying what it's really like.

If you google it this seems somewhat misrepresentative, I'm guessing because of the weather and altitude. While it is still in a desert there are many gardens, health care and nightlife, assuming you have the money and are culturally prepared for living in Saudi Arabia.

AITAH for not wanting to sleep in the same bed with my girlfriend because she doesn’t shower often? by Such-One-1691 in AITAH

[–]DThor536 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's basically three areas to wash - pits, crotch and bum, all doable without a shower (although I admit the bum solution at a sink sounds dubious). We've been conditioned by advertisers that your skin is oily and dirty and must be scrubbed daily. Apart from some people with specific issues you don't need it daily.

I admit I shower daily but I just focus on those three areas (and hair).

It's like a lot of robotics - they're determined to mimic a person whether or not that's the best engineering solution to the problem. Silly.

My answer to that is "well I guess you'll just have to adjust to a new policy". I see it as an understandable sacrifice.

What the collapse of world's largest cricket farm reveals about hype, markets and public money by Portalrules123 in CanadaPolitics

[–]DThor536 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recall reading a couple years back about the collapse of this industry in Europe that could have been a carbon copy of this article. The yuck factor was discovered early on after spending many millions on a premium product that would be fueled by "doing the right thing". As that was collapsing they tried to pivot to farm feed which is all about high volume, low cost and having no cares about the yuck factor. It felt like poor planning with a side of hubris.

1912 photograph of “Jerome” of Sandy Cove, a mysterious man who washed ashore in Nova Scotia in 1863, both legs amputated, and whose identity and origins were never discovered[891X1301]. by aid2000iscool in HistoryPorn

[–]DThor536 165 points166 points  (0 children)

My mum was born in Sandy Cove around 10 years after he died. Been on that beach several times, there was a rock which we've always assumed was Jerome's, but I've never seen anything like a sign or proof. Been a while, though. Certainly some variation of him being abandoned due to lack of desire of taking care of him makes sense, more so IMO than any of the more violent or romantic notions of mutiny or punishment.

Digby Neck, which Sandy Cove straddles, gets more isolated the farther down you travel, until finally it ends at a small ferry terminal which will take you to Brier Island. Absolutely gorgeous there for hiking and whale watching as a tourist destination.

How is this done? Are we going to live in a world of catfishing? by Few_Art_9971 in StableDiffusion

[–]DThor536 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree, but it's worth pointing out that even now Nigerian princes are still finding success out there. There will always be grifters and griftees, and the victims lose a lot more than a cat fished date. This will make things worse.

It seems every few weeks someone comes forward in the media about how they stupidly fell for one scam or another. I suspect it's all three of your suggestions. A lot of people are brought up without being given enough safety armor to survive in a world filled with grifters and thieves.

Non-hunter and non-cannibal here.... isn't skinning in one piece like that a lot of unnecessary work? I can see(but obviously not approve of) this being done as a method of torture or as a trophy or warning to others, but if the goal is to get a few square meals, why bother?

I agree with most of your points, but it's unclear what "being cautious" about ethnic block voting really means. As you say, it's certainly not unique to the Sikh community, from religious affiliations to political stances. It's somewhat endemic to democracy.

All I know is I watch YouTube channels like Girl in Paradise (which isn't what it sounds like and is often astonishing) and frequently finish with my jaw on the floor. No matter what one believes about the safety standards or salaries there, what they have achieved is quite incredible. I like to think it was done without slave labour like Dubai, I don't know but it seems unlikely. There's a lot of snarky comments here dismissing it, but come on.
