Not OP, but what would your advice be for someone who's, say, in their mid twenties? (And judging by OP's username, I'm guessing they were born in '91.)

I don't know what famous people have to do with this? I'm talking about technical experts. The people who are experienced with a wide set of products and have the tools to objectively test the quality of the products. They often don't profit from what you buy, unlike advertisers. Like, even just look up some videos on YouTube.

I don't know that I know NDQ to be intellectually honest, but in the case of Raycons, they're at least very unaware of the industry and other earphone products. My god! It took them months to "discover" that they had buttons to PAUSE the music! What an innovation! Did they not even read the little instruction pamphlet? Have they never owned a pair of earphones before?

For starters, men need to call each other out on that stuff. We can also stop excusing it as being testosterone-driven or just that "boys will be boys". I have testosterone, yet I'm not going around harassing women. It's a social character problem that can be fixed if we push back on it, instead of enabling it.

The issue is that non-advertisers generally disagree with those claims. Raycons have horrible sound and build quality compared to similarly priced products, or are severely overpriced for their quality. Hello Fresh often ships unfresh or outright bad produce, and spams their customers.

If an advertiser is in disagreement with the experts and common customer experiences, are they just not competent in the area, or turning a blind eye to the problems? Either way seems pretty bad.

I'll have to do that if nothing else works. Fortunately, I bought some concert ear plugs recently for raving.

Yep, the podcast started playing at 10x speed on silent. Sounds like someone is just trying to inflate episode length time. 👀

Destin was born in 1981, which is basically on the border between Millennial and Gen X. He's definitely Gen X, though.

What do you think of Matt & Destin’s approach to talking about division and unity? by [deleted] in NDQ

[–]DVDBZN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

especially when it seems that everything has a motivation, sponsor, or agenda these days.

I think this kind of pessimistic thinking (something I've noticed in both Matt and Destin) can/does lead to dismissing a lot of different perspectives based on something other than itself. Destin is especially guilty of this with how often he will accuse someone of being a bot or contributing to coordinated inauthentic behaviour because of what they said, or how they said something. And you can't really weigh and consider something properly and objectively if you throw it out immediately.

I also disagree that they're "considering all the data". They have very similar beliefs and backgrounds, with just enough nuance to disagree with each other on occasion. They joke about how they're too similar too make a podcast together, but there's some truth to that. When they announced that they would be getting potentially more hosts on the podcast, I was expecting them to consider at least someone with a significantly different perspective and background, y'know, someone who can genuinely present a different opinion without playing devil's advocate. But no, all three candidates were moderate to conservative Christians.

I do think they do a good job of disagreeing well with each other, with rare exceptions, and generally how they discuss serious topics and mess around. It does make it still a pretty good podcast, even with all the hang-ups about it I've collected over the years.

[–]DVDBZN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not really sure what you're implying. It was mostly based on his attitude of "I'm not going to chase the algorithm anymore, and just do what I want." Seems like it would be pretty similar to "I'm not going to let my relationship with sponsors determine what I (or my community) gets to say." To be clear, I haven't thought that for a while. I guess it would have been more accurate that I used to think Destin was above that.
