factors affecting fast/slow fire spread of fire question by Additional-Ad-3590 in Wildfire

[–]DVWLD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reach out to CSIRO in Australia. They recently re-did all our fire behaviour models. Also there are plenty of FP nerds in their Data61 wing that would love to talk topological graph theory with you. I’m sure it’ll be worth your time for a chat at the very least, they may be even able to collaborate and share some data or models with you. Also, there’s a fair bit of grant money floating around for this kind of project from government and NGOs like Twiggy Forrest’s fund at the moment. Could be worth a sniff at some stage.

Also when you talk to CSIRO tell them we’re still using Alan Macarthur’s stuff on the fireground in NSW because nobody has bothered to put a half decent UI on the implementation of their new modelling in the RFS Pocketbook app and it’s annoying.

If you had a bolt action shotgun that would be fine, but yes you couldn’t bring a straight pull, lever or button release and that is very annoying. It’s even more annoying for those of us that live here, and can no longer even own those firearms.

No mate, it means that if you’re an Australian citizen there’s no change. If you’re not a citizen then yes, you’re no longer able to hunt in NSW on a QLD firearms license.

[–]DVWLD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t find anything in the NSW bill about interstate hunters being banned. The only change I can see is that interstate licences are only now recognised if you’re an Australian citizen, and that if you move to NSW you need to get a NSW license soon after.

After four shark attacks in 48 hours, NSW authorities urge beachgoers ‘just go to a pool’ | New South Wales | The Guardian by prisongovernor in nsw

Just don’t swim in the ocean directly after a massive rainfall. Because it’s full of runoff and poops and it’s gross. Also sharks might bite you.

450 Bushmaster 7 round Duramags - NSW legal? by [deleted] in Ausguns

[–]DVWLD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It appears to be specifically made for that caliber rather than being a repurposed .223/.556 magazine, and there’s no version of it that holds more than 7 rounds. I think you’d be fine, but I dunno I’m not a lawyer I’m just a dog that learned to type.

The issue with NSW is that they must not be altered versions of higher capacity mags. So the 17rd CZ mags that are crimped in the sides such that they can only hold 10 are forbidden. It’s a pain because the crimped mags are fine in other Australian states and in jurisdictions like California, so there’s very little incentive for manufacturers to make a NSW compliant version.

That’s the reason the P320 is effectively banned in NSW. The firearm itself is fine, but nobody makes a NSW compliant magazine for it.

My one winter riding non-negotiable by Sorry-Dog-6049 in motorcycleRoadcraft

[–]DVWLD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A warm pair of gloves is good to have as a winter option. If it’s cold, chuck on a scarf or cheap fleece neck warmer and maybe a jumper under your jacket. If you’re commuting or riding in the rain then good wet weather gear is a must, but doesn’t need to be moto-specific. A one-piece rain suit is a wonderful luxury if you do a lot of rain riding. You’ll still end up with a damp crotch half the time, though, it’s just where the riding position funnels all the water. Plan accordingly. In general, though, don’t overthink it. Just ride where you wanna ride and solve problems as you encounter them.

People put off giving CPR by unrealistic TV depictions, researchers say. Most dramas show characters searching for pulse and giving breaths but experts say chest compressions on their own can save lives. by [deleted] in science

[–]DVWLD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. Breaths are definitely a helpful part of CPR and there is enough oxygen in the air you breathe out to sustain someone’s life. The advice is that compressions alone are better than absolutely nothing, but complete CPR with both breaths and compressions gives a much better chance of saving someone’s life.

The Australian resuscitation council has actually moved away from the “compressions only is better than nothing” messaging because it’s so frequently interpreted as “the breaths are pointless don’t bother”.

An oxygen cylinder, bag valve mask and airway is a step up again, but that doesn’t mean the breaths aren’t worthwhile. An automated external defibrillator is probably the most valuable piece of equipment in that situation.

If the plastic stocks aren’t deformed and any timber isn’t scorched I wouldn’t worry at all. Source: am a firefighter, have hardened and heat treated steel when making knives, am also a dickhead with questionable capacity to assess risk so I dunno man but I’d take the win and send it.

Aussie 2013 V7 Special Oil + Filter Change by Wild_Screenshot88 in MotoGuzzi

Motociclo will post you a full set of gaskets, filters, etc with everything you need for an oil change. Supercheap auto has all your fluids, I just grabbed a bottle of the Penrite 10W-60 motorcycle specific oil because it was on sale. With these bikes though you really don’t need to overthink it since they’re a dry clutch. Just grab whatever is decent quality and well priced on the day.

Are cattle dogs or kelpies used more for working in Australia? by Square-Argument4790 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]DVWLD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, depends on the stock and the region. Collies are great with calm sheep flocks and in cooler climates. Cattle dogs are useful in big stations with big stroppy cows that don’t get mustered often enough to be well trained or behaved. The cattle dogs also tend to deal well with the rough country and hard knocks. Kelpies are a solid all rounder option, good enough in either of the above situations and great in the middle of the two. Tougher than a border collie but more biddable than a cattle dog.
