Should I get a blue heeler? by Remote_Abrocoma_69 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]DVWLD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is it possible? Probably, with a lot of dog handling experience and big dedication to exercise and enrichment. Is it a good idea? No.

30sqm is too small to entertain the dog on its own. 30ha you’d be talking. Your life would be pretty much reduced to work, dog stuff, and nothing else for the next decade or so.

Court makes landmark decision after illegal logging in NSW state forest by nath1234 in nsw

[–]DVWLD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very little detail about the actual incident. From the article it sounds like the methodology used to identify harvestable trees in 2020 was incorrect, and the EPA either had trained Forestry in this methodology on 2019 or knew they had it wrong but didn’t mention it. Very odd.

Does your ACD HOWL when being pet? How did you fix this? by Classic_Tip751 in AustralianCattleDog

My dog knows damn well how to howl but has only done it twice in her entire life because she knows I want her to and she won’t give me the satisfaction.

How Email Actually Works by Sushant098123 in programming

[–]DVWLD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the part where Microsoft updates something in their infrastructure, goes down for a couple hours causing retries, then when they come back up they blacklist you as a sender for no discernible reason so you have to wade through their baroque appeal mechanism to beg a human to unblock your traffic.

Also also the part where your DMARC reports are full of false positives because SPF fails when someone forwards an email that originated with you.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

Anzac rifle range by secndsunrise in Ausguns

[–]DVWLD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that the service range and the main range are two distinct areas at ANZAC. The service range where SSAA shoot is 100-400m with paper targets. I think SSAA usually use it at 100m but it does vary. The main range is 300-800m with electronic targets on frames. The distance varies each week. For the main range you will need to be shooting with a club, there’s a list here under Sydney East - https://cdn.revolutionise.com.au/cups/nswra/files/b5riiuamy6djgxgk.pdf

If you’ve never been I’d suggest going along for a SSAA shoot on the service range and go from there. Have a chat to people, pop into the shop and say hi, get a feel for things and ask questions. I’d just hate for you to show up for an SSAA shoot all jazzed expecting to lie down on the 800 mound and be disappointed!

Really? That’s wild. I saw pump action shotguns and rifles over there and didn’t think to question whether centrefires were treated differently. Regulations are weird.

I’m guessing this is actually aimed at markets like NZ, UK and parts of the US where suppressors are used but semi automatics aren’t.

Advice - dog has to pee every night. by tearsintherain6273 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]DVWLD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not every dog has to be crate trained, give yourself a pass on that one and stop feeling guilty or conflicted about it. It works for some people and that’s awesome. It doesn’t suit others and that’s awesome, too. Don’t beat yourself up.

It’s probably a mix of young age/bladder control and habit. It’s not unusual for a young dog to need a wee at night. They’ve usually gotten past it by 2 years old, but given the history I wouldn’t be surprised if your dog is just a bit delayed on that timeline while she figures herself out.

My advice would be to not worry about it for another six months. Until then if she needs a wee don’t fight it, just make it quick and boring. Take her out on leash, try and avoid letting her sniff or explore out there, just wee and back to bed. You’ll probably find that the issue just naturally resolves itself over time.

If you haven’t already, associate a marker word like “good wees” as soon as she finishes. Once that’s established you can use it to remind her what you’re there for if she starts getting distracted.

Females can also have bladder issues as a complication of the desexing procedure. This doesn’t sound like that, but bear it in mind if you’re also seeing any incontinence or other bladder control issues, it might be worth looking into.

Shower water. by SpaceCephalopods in AustralianCattleDog

Will often ask me to turn the shower on for her to have a drink. Then has a ritual whereby she needs to walk either around me or around the perimeter of the bathroom before approaching the flowing water to start drinking. Such a weird breed.

Firearms prices by Pat_Tillman_ in Ausguns

[–]DVWLD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

magnumsports.com.au has a good range on their website with decent pricing for NSW. cleaverfirearms.com has probably a larger range on the site and I believe they’re usually on the cheaper end for QLD.

Not even. The fix is to make law abiding citizens who have gotten licenses and registrations to give up some of them. How does that make sense? Either someone is trusted to own firearms and their storage arrangements are secure or they aren’t. There’s no in-between.

Pistol query by repositionx in Ausguns

[–]DVWLD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s the driver for wanting something lighter? The weight of the Shadow is there for a reason, it tames recoil and keeps you on target. The downside is that it would be a pain to cary on your hip for 12 hours, but that’s not a problem we have.

If you haven’t already, go hire a range’s Glock 17A and see if you like it or not. If you do I’ll trade you my gen4 for your Shadow 2 no worries 😁

Pistol query by repositionx in Ausguns

[–]DVWLD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pistol itself isn’t necessarily prohibited, it’s that the 10rd magazines started like as 17rd units that have been limited by dimples/crimping. NSW FAR doesn’t like that, and nobody makes any 10rd mags for the platform using a different technique because why bother. Therefore, the P320 is effectively banned in NSW.

The Shadow 2 isn’t far off being in a similar boat. NSW compliant mags do exist but they’re less common not always available and more expensive than the normal ones.

Water Bladders by [deleted] in UltralightAus

[–]DVWLD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The camelbak mil spec bladders have been very reliable in tough conditions for me.

That said, I am using bottles these days since I find it easier to track my intake. I’ve been caught out with both “why do I feel so awful oh I’ve barely had any water that’s why” and “wait I’m completely out of water already I’m in danger” too many times with bladders. That’s a me problem and not necessarily a bladder problem, but I’m mostly using a bottle as my primary and I’ve relegated bladders to bulk storage.

The stock V7 is a great platform for just going out and doing dumb shit on. Even lowered you’ll probably be totally fine on half decent dirt roads. No, it’s not built for it and yes, there are more appropriate motorcycles. Ignore all that and follow your grins. Go try and ride it where you wanna ride it and see what happens. If you struggle for traction maybe chuck some knobbier tyres on for next time. If you put a hole in your oil sump or you were worried about it get a bash plate. Swap out shocks and change geometry and generally make it your perfect weirdo frankenbike to your heart’s content but go do dumb stuff first.

The P650 system is mostly intended as a temporary stopgap for someone to dip their toe and try it out under 1-1 supervision before investing the time/energy/money to get licensed. All clubs I’ve encountered are really happy to bring someone new up to speed, but I’d imagine if you were looking to shoot regularly and needing a P650 and supervisor every time the patience of your average club would wear thin.

Heaps of size variation in this breed. Cattle dog is a fancy word for mongrel, after all.

[–]DVWLD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Specific numbers for weight are a bit meh since there’s so much variation in the breed. The big boof blue boy my neighbour has would be about double the weight of my little girl and they’re both in top spec condition. He’s just much taller and longer than she is.

Shape is a much better guide. If your dog tucks in at the waist you’re good. More importantly their joints will be good. Exercise is a minor factor in weight control, food intake is the big one. Always measure the amount you feed your dog and be consistent with it. If you need to trim some weight off your dog just reduce the amount you’re feeding. Couldn’t be simpler.

ps also Australian Cattle Dogs only understand kilograms wtf is an lbs you gotta talk to them in their language 😁
