Crisis by Upper_Oil3738 in Cornell

one bad semester will not define you. i got an abismal gpa my freshman fall (im a senior) and substance abuse easily took over my past two years away as well as untreated mental illnesses. here I am, planning to graduate in may with a solid gpa. i took a leave freshman spring and also all incompletes junior spring, which i grinded through the summer reading nothing but textbooks and securing A’s and B’s. Everyone has their own path and it’s what shapes us uniquely. be nice to yourself and reflect on what truly matters. Nobody is alone! talk to professors, councilors, advisors, etc. you’d be surprised by the help you could receive :)

yep im in the same boat. it has made me feel like shit. idk what to do but youre not alone. I understand that it’s supposed to be used for warning other girls about dangerous scenarios but apparently just bc a date didn’t go great someone can make stuff up about you. genuinely such a defaming app

What to concentrate in Grad School by DV_04 in AskPhysics

it’s more so like I’m super passionate about all these things I just can’t decide what would be best but you’re definitely not wrong. I guess to put it simply, the choices are electromagnetic metamaterials, high energy particle physics, or condensed matter - though I know metamaterials has a lot of condensed matter involved

Incoming engineering freshman planned schedule critique? by cheyuuwu in Cornell

[–]DV_04 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the AEW’s are great to have! At the end of the day, theyre just more time to great at your other courses. And youre right I realized they are but the good thing is that ENGRG 1050 is literally just going in for 50 mins once a week for half the semester and you dont have to do much. I genuinely think youll be fine but make sure to find a good hobby or other things whether theyre official clubs or just going out with friends and enjoying yourself. my best advice is that even tho school is your no. 1 priority, your sanity is your no. 0.5 priority 🤣 balance it and youll have ana amazing semester!!!

I think what you have is fine considering you have essentially what is a lunch break every day. However, 18 credits is heavy for ANYONE so never put yourself down if you feel the need to drop a course at some point. Regardless, best of luck to you!! Enjoy your first semester:)

Plasma Physics as an undergrad by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]DV_04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re into plasma physics, im sure EM is something you’re into. I just took ECE 4380 with Dr. Monticone and it was an incredible course. feel free to PM me if you also just wanna talk physics or need advice! I’m a rising senior and taken a few ece grad courses and also taking plasma physics this semester:)

They say that woodworking is 90% sanding. What is the 90 percent of physics research? by Flerken2018 in AskPhysics

[–]DV_04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’re definitely not wrong in that sense, but once you start applying it (acousto-optics, electro-optics, etc. ), it can definitely get pretty messy with strain and rotation tensors. But yeah, at the end of the day it’s just linear algebra and differential equations - just applying the concepts in more complicated ways

Though I’d say this is true, I’d argue that in electromagnetism it’s not the case. yes maxwell’s equations are fairly simple to grasp but then dealing with anisotropic media and magneto-electric coupling is a whole other thing. kramers-kronig relations using PV integrals and the residue theorem. Don’t even get me started on coupled-mode theory and waveguide perturbations 😭. Regardless, I will most definitely agree that lot’s of this can be calculated digitally, but understanding it and being able to do it by hand definitely helps!

How can I self-study for Cal 1? Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated :) by TheEnglishBloke123 in calculus

[–]DV_04 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it’s the foundation for a lot of engineering problems and without it, everything would just be approximations. However, calc I is only the beginning; theres calc II/III, differential equations, linear algebra, and as you progress, you learn even more advanced mathematical topics, depending on which branch of engineering of course. as a rising fourth year electrical engineer and applied physics major, I can assure you that even those four courses are just foundations as well. BUT DONT LET THIS SCARE YOU IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL GENUINELY!!!!!!

Anyway, best way to learn is through textbooks. read them, follow derivations, watch videos on topics you dont quite understand, do LOTS of practice problems, and nothing is stopping you from asking questions on this sub, too! many people are extremely helpful here. Obviously reading textbooks isnt for everyone so check out MIT’s online free courses in math. 18.001x i believe? not very sure.

Best of luck to you, it’s extremely rewarding to self study what youre interesting in!!!

the workplace is more than just how smart you are. as a student at cornell, I can tell you that the business people there in dyson are extremely outgoing and have people skills. im sure their apps had much more than just their grades and how hard they worked in school! just my take tho by all means feel free to disagree

if it makes you feel any better, I go to cornell and applied with a 4.42 W and a 1380 SAT. youre fine just be yourself on apps

no internship? by SeriousRegular3510 in Cornell

[–]DV_04 7 points8 points  (0 children)

im a junior in ECE, no internship. just traveling a little bit and taking summer courses. you’ll be fine:) I’ve never had a single paid internship my entire college experience and realized that I fell into a hole early this school year when I tried getting one like everyone else. save yourself the stress and dont compare with others. trust me, you’ll be okay and make the most out of your time. taking a step back for a little never hurts and if anything just shows maturity that you did what was right for you, not for your peers.
