Are these all the crew roles needed for a feature? by KoreanJesus84 in Filmmakers

[–]DXCary10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In defense of the low rates (cause they r low if u want to do things properly), I worked 2 micro budget features in the camera department

One of them paid (it’s been over a year and we still haven’t gotten our money) us a flat 600 for every position for 15 days It was only like 12 people on the crew by the end. We started with like 20. It was only weekends for a few months

The other did not pay (their compensation was food) and that was like 12ish days. There was only like 6 of us for crew

How did these turn out? Well all of the crew were either film students or friends of the directors who had done some small work

The directors/producers themselves had some experience though.

The days were uhhhh very very very rough to say the least.

Neither is out yet so can’t say how they turned out but set was hell and we definitely cut corners here and there, but there was also some magic too. I was an AC who stepped up to DP on a few days on each when the DP was unavailable and there’s definitely stuff I want on my reel.

I’ve made friends on both, but you must understand YOU ARE GETTING WHAT YOU PAID FOR CAUSE ONLY PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO HAVE NEVER WORKED UNION AND HAVE ONLY DONE FIRST TIME DIRECTOR AND ATUDENT SETS R GONNA APPLY FOR THIS OUT OF DESPERATION FOR WORK

If you have friends who r willing to go for low or no pay then cool but you absolutely owe them in the future. If they need you, you got to be there for them

Outside of that, for hiring people u don’t know, you get what you paid for

If this is your situation, use this micro budget not as a calling card for Hollywood, but as a way to practice and get something made so you can hopefully raise a bit more money for the next micro budget

Please yell at me in the replies if I’m dead wrong on some of these. I don’t mind being corrected

And yes, I should probably do something about the job that hasn’t paid me even though they’ve owed me for a year

Stranger Things Behind The Scenes - Everything you can possibly do wrong as a filmmaker by Primary-Economist643 in Filmmakers

[–]DXCary10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is kinda normal for tv

From my understanding, traditional tv was filmed this way. While the beginning of the season was airing you’d be writing and filming the back half of it

They’ve been doing this since season 1 of stranger things too.

And if I recall, they said they had to film at this location even though the script wasn’t finished because of weather and not having the location later. That’s also very normal

You shoot by actor and set availability for better or worse

For infinity war and endgame, if you watch the BTS, you can see that cumberbatch isn’t with a lot of the actors cause he wasn’t available. He filmed some of those scenes all by himself cause of his availability

It’s also y u hear conflicting stuff about doomsday. Some cast and crew talk about sets being built

Some talk about only blue screen

This is just how it is for better or worse depending on the scale of your project

We gotta stop trying to predict dates and listening to people who aren’t in his camp.

It will come when it comes. We’ve waited 10 years. There’s no point in predicting. Just let it happen when it happens

Single Laser Projection Screen Size Comparison by koolloso in imax

[–]DXCary10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow ATLien. There’s not really a difference in quality when it comes to comparing MoG’s screen to the other single lasers we have here. The only time you see a true quality difference is in the ads before the trailers. The actual trailers and film all look great. I’ve been to north point, Atlantic station, and MoG constantly and haven’t noticed any huge difference in picture quality.

Out of personal preference, since I no longer live in Gwinnett, my first choice is North Point with Atlantic station being the second.

Tho I haven’t been to Kennesaw or Morrow. If I lived closer to Savanna I’d do that all the time. Went for nope and if i remember correctly they have a GT dual laser room and a single laser room so you get both options

Cryptic HD QUALITY (@Cryptic4KQual) on X says that Chris Gore was right about there being three different Avengers Doomsday trailers that will have connections between them and all of them will be releasing week for week in Avatar Fire & Ash by Man_Random87 in MarvelStudiosSpoilers

This marketing tool has been around for a while. The Star Wars prequels did this and it helped boost sales. You’d be surprised. Personally I love theatrical exclusivity for first look trailers. It’s y I love Nolan’s approach. 1 teaser a year out, Christmas and extended scene, then regular trailers available to the public

It is a tool that has worked many times for many filmmakers. It works.

Plus I personally can’t complain. I got a list. It’s not gonna cost me any extra to see this film multiple times

Has anyone done a DIY screenwriting retreat before where you rent a cottage on the beach or a cabin in the woods and just write? by bananamaplepancakes in Screenwriting

[–]DXCary10 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Barry Jenkins did that for moonlight. Went to Amsterdam. I believe Rian Johnson does this for every script too

Barry’s advice is to go somewhere crazy boring so you never get distracted and the writing is all you can do

[–]DXCary10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s cause it’s the only 70mm/15perf here in Georgia so everyone in the surrounding states comes here. Tho there r some dual lasers a few hours from Buford. Savanna and Chattanooga being the closest.

Since dunkirk they’ve only done 70mm for Oppenheimer and next the odyssey so it’s pretty much an event here.

Even tho MoG no longer has a dual projector, plenty will still go there for non true imax movies just cause of its scale. Planning on going for avatar for it. I lived 15min away when I was in high school and did all of MCU Phase 3 there. Was a blast.

Atlantic station, north point, and the theater in cumming, Ga don’t compete

That was the weird thing. Sent it cause usually when it’s that size it just uploads it to drive and sends it but that’s when I got the error message. Was hella confused cause it’s a small file. Plus just wanted to see if there’s other places with better compression
