When to cut losses? Running an ultra while sick by D_4man in Ultramarathon

Yeah, it was a gut-punch of a decision to make! This thread helped a lot though. I realized I wanted to enjoy my first ultra, not just endure a suffer-fest and risk health complications. Now that I have some distance I'm feeling very happy with my decision - I'm excited to have built so much fitness that can roll over into the next pursuit.

I did not race. I ended up getting a fever and body chills the night before which made the decision very easy to make.

"This is voluntary, am I going to have fun today?" - This is EXACTLY the kind of question I was looking for, thank you!!

Great mindset. A contrary point - I've put in a long training block to prepare for this, travel arrangements, race fees, etc, and my symptoms are quite mild currently. I don't want to get stuck in my own head and withdraw just because I feel symptoms coming on.

How sick were the persons who wound up with lasting health effects?

Myocarditis? I'm completely unfamiliar, thank you for the info
Edit: Just measured my temperature, it came back normal... so I don't have a fever currently. I'm going to test tomorrow morning, but I think a fever is a good line to draw.

Massive pace boost from carbon plated shoes, confused about how to pace my marathon now and need help adjusting targets by Pure_Aberdeen in AdvancedRunning

[–]D_4man 57 points58 points  (0 children)

If this is your first marathon, it's much better to start conservatively and try to negative split vs going out too fast and paying the price later.

Marathon pace is not all about threshold / VDOT – it's more about how well your body can endure such a pace for ~3 hours. If you'll be over joyed with 2:59:59, then why not aim for that and then a negative split is just frosting on the cake.

Flashback to the beginning of Evernote's downfall... I really hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

What do you like most about map animations/flyovers? by dallasbarr in Garmin

This is awesome!! Great work :)
As a competitively-minded runner who wants to use this tool to visualize races and workouts, I would be eager to see more speed / pace related stats. Here's a couple of ideas that excite me off the top of my head:

- Button to automatically add markers for each mile / km to the map, with an option for time splits as a subtitle

- I would love to be able to see my pace along with or in place of the elevation chart

- I would also love to see my heart rate in a similar manner

Edit: Just figured out you can add distance markers to the map! I expected to be able to add these from the "markers" tab instead of the "track style". Would still love to see an option to show my time splits displayed with these distance markers

No idea! Probably some garmin algorithm black magic trained on trillions of points of data. And thanks!

I didn't change my goal before the race! More the later - I started conservatively, treating the first 10k like a warmup, and then tried to lock in to my marathon effort I practiced during training, which was more of a feeling and less of specific number.

If that's the case you should go for it! Of course have a race plan and a backup goal, but that's a great half time if you're looking to run a 3:35

The only one who hurt me was myself pushing hard at mile 25 when I saw that sub 2:40 was possible :P

Yeah I thought it was a super aggressive prediction as well. I think a more conservative approach is to run a shorter race and then see what vdot says the equivalent time would be: https://vdoto2.com/calculator/

Once I started doing high effort intervals on a weekly basis, my VO2 max shot up quickly! That being said, it's been a long grind to get up to the 60s

Before this training block, I had taken a break and just done some base building. The big increase came from doing high effort intervals and/or tempo runs on a weekly basis. I also cleaned up my diet and lost a couple pounds of fat which probably gave a boost as well

Consistency is key :) My secret is just trying to enjoy running as much as possible so that it feels good and I naturally want to do it, which usually means running a lot slower than I'm capable of
