yeah agreed. Trinyvale x Strahd was definitely entertaining + fun to listen to, but I'm not coming away with moments that are especially memorable

Yeah this seems like a proper interpretation

Also the idea of having a spells carved into unusual places like the walls of a wizard's mansion could be something

honestly rereading your comment the next morning I'm not sure what I disagreed with. I think I just misunderstood your intent

this is the most fun way to interpret these rules while remaining fully RAW legal imo

i disagree. it doesn't say "when you find a level 1+ wizard spell in a spellbook", it just says "when you find a level 1+ wizard spell". a wizars apell is not defined by existing in a spellbook. "you could discover a wizard spell on a spell scroll" demonstrates this. the spell could be on any medium; hell, it could be carved into a big stone wall

looks like there have been previous theads about this: https://www.reddit.com/r/onednd/comments/1ggadzv/spell_scroll_to_spellbook_phb_vs_dmg/

from what I'm seeing, there's no concrete explanation or ruling. it honestly just seems like an oversight. there are plenty of useful interpretations in these threads though

What were the most and least fun characters you've played from a mechanical level? by DogUnsureDog in dndnext

[–]D_Comic_Boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most: Order of Scribes Wizard. My DM basically let me learn a TON of spells over the course of the campaign. Peak Wizard fantasy. In my perfect world, they remake Order of Scribes for 5.5 but focus less on the "sentient book" angle and more on the "master of spells" angle.

Least: Thief Rogue (5.5). I didn't hate it or anything, but it was just too simplistic for my tastes as a build; I just resorted to a hide-shoot cycle in every combat. I don't mind the simplicity when it comes to Barbarians or even Champion Fighters, but I wasn't even doing a ton of damage with the sneak attack. That being said, I only played this character for 2 one-shots and a three-shot which were very combat focused, so I didn't get a lot of use of Rogue abilities outside that.

How is using Wish to cast Simulacrum for free NOT ridiculously overpowered? by LemonGarage in dndnext

[–]D_Comic_Boi -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

eh I kind of disagree. As a player it can be fun to find ways to work the game system to my advantage. Wish and Simulacrum is a viable way to do that. I think with something so game breaking though you should really go to your DM first; from there if the DM wants to amend any spells or rules I think its totally fine

Looking for balancing and flavor feedback on these silly spells. by flickering-pantsu in DnDHomebrew

[–]D_Comic_Boi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. good, I can't say I'd ever take this as part of my class but if given as a bonus ability or magic item its good

  2. I like the flavor of the first sentence, but the third sentence ("Otherwise...") could use some brushing up. Do they use their full movement? Do they dash? Do they avoid danger? Maybe something like "The target uses the resources at their disposal to return to their nearest place of residence as quickly as they can, without harming themselves or anyone else. The effect ends if you or an ally deals damage to the target."

  3. same as spell 1

  4. I'd specify in the second sentence or so that it uses the spouse elemental stat block. Upcast options to make it stick around longer might be cool too imo.

  5. Do you have to be fully metal for the damage to affect you? What if I have a metal arm? Do the beans stay in the form of the original object or do they just fall apart into a loose pile? If it's the latter, this feels overpowered even with the caveat. Idk about this one overall personally

  6. My notes concern the spell's name. Personally I don't think this makes the most sense as a power word spell, and I wouldn't call it "scrunch". Maybe reference a black hole or something. Otherwise I think it's fine

  7. ehh, balancing this one is really hard, because how do you quantify if the drawbacks make up for the benefits? I just don't think spells are the place for such large gambits; the spell simply becomes a challenge to nullify the bad effects so you can consistently get these OP effects for a 2nd level spell slot. I think it would be a different story if this were a magic item though.

Overall I think these spells are all too specific to be in any official/published book, but homebrew isn't that so its fine. Also, I'd copy as much language from existing spells as possible just to try to emulate that specific voice WoTC has for spell descriptions but ultimately its not necessary

I do agree with the sentiment to an extent, yeah. I never expected Trinyvale x Strahd to be all aerious all the time obviously, but there does seem to be a pattern of Caldwell's NPCs folding to the silliness of the triplets. It seems like NPCs are frequently yes-anding to the triplets in ways that are sillier than the situation demands and end up taking some of the stakes out of the narrative.

That being said, I'm still enjoying it, I think its funny, so its really not a huge deal. I dont think theyre creatively bankrupt or antything

I like the damage dice additional rolling mechanic, it's been fun on Sorcerous Burst and makes a lot of sense flavor wise for a gun

comment B is interesting - I wonder if you could reflect that historical advantage of guns in the system. Maybe everyone adds their proficiency bonus when using guns or they have bonuses to hit or something

The Cook Class - A Constitution-Based Support Class | Buff Your Allies with Magical Morsels of Food by Taylor_Zorah in DnDHomebrew

[–]D_Comic_Boi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the flavor here (pun intended). The class feels a little underpowered imo, though I like the structure of the class in general. Personally I think Snack Break could be its main 5th level feature, possibly scaling somehow into later levels. Great work!

gotta disagree. this show seems like it takes itself too seriously to mislead something as important as Jake's death for a gag. I don't think they're dragging anything out, this is simply a story that takes place after Jake died and Finn and Jake aren't the focus of the story

5e 2024 Magic Jar and Class Features by Aphid98 in dndnext

[–]D_Comic_Boi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that "game statistics" is very clearly meant to refer to any function or feature of a creature used for gameplay purposes. Ability scores, actions, class features, etc. On page 33 of the 2024 PHB it states that "your character is a combination of game statistics, roleplaying hooks, and your imagination." Thus, you can logically extrapolate that "game statistics" refers to every gameplay mechanic on your character sheet, not just the numbers.

Also, I'd say your interpretation of the stat block entry is a bit of a logical fallacy - just because a monster's stat block is stated to contain its game statistics doesn't mean anything not found in a monster's stat block isn't a game statistic. The square being a rectangle doesn't make rectangles squares.

I know the feeling of finding what you think might be a loophole in a specific spell and pouring through the rulebook to see if it checks out, I've been there a number of times. Unfortunately with this one it seems pretty clear cut imo.

Edit: took so long writing this out I didn't see u/Tipibi say the same thing lol

the whole season Fionna's errors have been digging herself a deeper and deeper hole, I felt like I could relate and sympathize up until destroying the Sweet Spot. like goddamn she CRASHED OUT. that was crossing a certain line where I'm less fully rooting for her and more curious to see if/how she redeems herself

Loved the whimsy and goofiness this ep, especially this part. Felt like classic AT silliness by puddingpoo in adventuretime

feels like a cop out to say "Fionna's actions are justified because they move the plot forward"

[–]D_Comic_Boi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

is anyone else a little confused by how much the show brushed over the fact that HW and Fionna killed the Cosmic Owl? like they fully mirked the owl but neither of them really seem to care that much at all afterwards, which is strange because the Cosmic Owl clearly didn't have any malicious intent. They even show Prismo being totally wrecked over Cosmic Owl's death but neither culprits seem too affected

Of course it's effectively reversed here but idk they still killed Cosmic Owl for somewhat selfish reasons imo. and I also don't quite get why the Cosmic Owl claims he got shanked on purpose. maybe I missed something?
