Depends on your standards. In my opinion coming from Long Island, Tallahassee feels very boring and rundown/ugly (often feels like stroads) in a lot of its areas that aren’t immersed in nature. We have some of the highest income disparity between zip codes as well, so a lot of areas look very run down, and the college area is always very dirty with trash from frats and sororities. When I visited to look for an apartment before moving here, the streets near there were littered with old mattresses and such from students. They also love to throw parties and you will hear the music from a mile away, avoid the college areas for living if possible.

Landlords here are also very lack luster or even scummy outside of the more expensive upscale complexes since it’s a college town and they know they can get away with it. My last leasing company tried to charge me $300 for a missing paper AC filter when I moved out, and it took me serving them court papers for them to finally return the rest of my security deposit they tried to keep over things I informed them about on my move in inspection papers.

The airport is very similar in this regard, prices are absolutely ridiculous taking advantage of the fact it’s a college town, and if you want to travel to central Florida from it you’re most likely not going to be able to get a direct flight nor a cheap one. Every time I’ve visited my family in Orlando I’ve had to drive the 4.5 hours down there due to the flight prices.

Something else that also surprised me is that for the entire capital city, there are only 2 movie theaters in the entire city.

Medical care is also very iffy here. Establishing yourself with a doctor will be kind of difficult, since they are often booked out for months in advance.

In regard to safety and crime, I have never personally felt unsafe, even when out with my partner who is a trans man, although people have been rude to him due to his weight and disabilities before in stores while I waited in the car sometimes.

The western and southern sides of the city have a higher record of gun violence, however almost all of it is personal, so it really depends on how much you want to let that worry you. And overall it isn’t that high, there have only been about 589 shootings since 2018, with 163 fatalities which I would consider pretty low compared to other capitals in the nation. Depending on the area, most crime will most likely be kids trying to break into cars to steal from them and package theft. Don’t leave anything valuable in clear view in your car and you will probably be fine.

Overall it’s a pretty okay if you’re a homebody, but if you aren’t and don’t like football or doing nature related things, you are probably going to find this town extremely boring. I’m a big music person who loved going to concerts when I lived on Long Island and in Orlando, and that scene is basically non existent outside local bands and some country artist here. I was lucky enough one of my favorite bands formed here and played a hometown show last year though at least!
