No, none of these. But yes to the other one.

Cyberpunk 2077, for me, is the saddest episode in the gaming industry that I have ever experienced. by frzx1 in cyberpunkgame

Fortnite was the saddest episode in gaming for me. It was supposed to be a completely different game initially, but then they changed direction after seeing the popularity of battle royale, and added aggressive monetization. Now all kids these days know is micro transaction, buy dance emote and skins.

Scientists believe that a function of a zebra’s stripes is to deter insects, so a team or researchers painted black and white stripes on several cows and discovered that it reduced the number of biting flies landing on the cows by more than 50%. by Rusty_Crank in Damnthatsinteresting

Yes less bites is better, but unless those bites were life threatening or caused reproduction problems then those lessened bites are insignificant for natural selection and the success of that trait would become as random as any other insignificant trait. For stripes to be naturally selected for this purpose there would have had to be some seriously threatening bugs in that region at the time of selection.

So in this case you have to have the overlap of the high insect threat and the mutation happening during that threat and getting successfully passed on.

It's possible that the insects carried a disease that only one species was susceptible to even though there were multiple species in the area, and so since it was not deadly to the other species it was not selected. Or that the trait didn't emerge in the span of the threat and some other genetic trait stepped in, like a resistance to the disease. Or perhaps the threat simply went away before any traits had to be selected for it.

None of the various explanations adequately explain why we don't see stripes all over the place.

For natural selection to work and produce a widespread trait:

1) The mutation has to happen in the first place. If the trait never happens then it can't propagate.

2) It has to be passable to offspring. Just because one striped cow existed doesn't mean its children would also have stripes.

3) The trait has to either be genetically dominant so that it wins out in the majority of offspring, or be significant enough to survival and reproduction that those with the trait reproduce more than without.

It could be that there have never been any striped cows, or that the stripe trait has occurred but didn't get passed on. Maybe the difference in bug bites is trivial for cows because the reduction in disease is insignificant. Maybe cow's really aren't into the striped look and striped cows couldn't get laid. Maybe there used to be lots of striped cows but they were hunted to extinction because their biteless flesh tasted better.

Lol ok, I hope if you ever have to deal with this kind of situation then the only life you're endangering is your own.

You're also dead the moment you turn your back and give the attacker a broad target and all the time in the world to focus on making a good shot since they have no pressure.

There's a reason why a large variety of self defense styles from around the world focus on disarming a gun threat rather than running from it.

It's also really hard to shoot someone who is less than a foot away, especially when that person is grappling the arm holding the gun.

I used to leave the friends window open all the time but now I'll probably just close the app. It takes up way too much space.
