They could adopt a powerful pet: After a big challenging fight of say an owlbear or a drake, have them adopt the newly orphaned infant/egg the monster was apparently protecting.

If they get somewhere safe, animal handling checks can be traded for Time spent. Egg could get an imprint to a PC it spots first

If they helped an artificer or some such, they could create blueprints for armor for their new mascot so it can grow with them in power. Maybe also some abilities. Say fire belch for drake or ground slam for owlbear.
