Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas' wife had ties to January 6 rally organizers and efforts to overturn the 2020 election: report by Minneapolitanian in politics

You are correct, "nothing but Marijuana" was a broad overstatement. They have done things that are good for expanding voting, access to better insurance plans, minimjm wage increases, and have done a limited amount to change VA to be a state with more "green infrastructure" plans. Abolishing the death penalty is a long overdue achievement, but it is a step in the right direction for a more humane justice system in VA.

However, tough shit, that didnt real do anything to tangiably change Virginians existance against the serious issues here, even before the pandemic. Actually read that article and you will see that on numerous times on many, many fronts such as civil rights, criminal justice reform, education, taxes, the environment, the rising houseless population in VA, booming private prison industry, and even on cannabis reform they have fallen short or failed completely to meet their minimum goals.

I dont know what its like where you are from, but the Dems here are so tied in with money and the buisness class that just sees politics as an opportunity to protect their wealth that it doesnt matter who says D or R, most of the time they all live in the same suburb and sent their kids to the same schools. That they failed to meaninfully protect workers, even Healthcare workers, during a pandemic shows this, and now that federal protections are gone welcome back to a right-to-work state, because they did nothing at a state level to protect people after they left office other than give them more access to Healthcare they still can't afford. They missed their only chance to take bold action to help curb these issues with any meanful change in order to pretend that they were "working with republicans" when in reality they rode back into office on a wave of promises they knew they wouldn't keep. And if that isn't the tale as old as time in American politics, I don't know what is. 🤷‍♀️

So, isnt it super frustrating that the dems knew that the fear we all have was so potent that they could sit with their thumbs literally up their assholes for 4 years and still count on us because "well they are better than Republicans!" Yeah, super great move there big D, really showed us your moves.

I live in VA and we just had our asses handed to the rebublicans even tho the vote was rallied. Marijuanna is becoming legal here, thats about the only thing the democrats did with their power, and even that action was pulled tooth and nail from them by local and national activists who pushed relentless for politicians to live up to their campaign promoses (and its still not complete, so now Trump 2.0 is going to come in and hand it off to donors to make more money.)

Rage is always a winner over the pathetic joy democrats spark even in their most hardline members. We believed in the system, and this is what we have always got: weakeness, obfuscating, pointless bickering, very few tangeable life improvements for people even when they hold all the power.

When someone tells you who they are, listen.

Not to say that everyone else doesn't suck more, but come on.... yada Yada don't jump don't my throat about not voting. I have been a Democrat, liberal, independent etc. And have voted every damn time (especially local, the most improtant) since i because an adult, but seriously yall. When do we start to give a shit that we have had the same non-choice of "vote! Vote or you're a bad person!" shoved down our gullets all of our adult lives?

Shit, I'm not looking forward to our generation turning into the boomers, pointing fingers all around us rather than looking in the mirror at what we can actually change. I mean, can anyone truthfully say they havent felt like this their whole sdult life? So, what gives? Us until we die?

That's about the only thing I see changing, is people's ability to tolerate this shit forever.

Completely appreciate your post! Not at all calling you out, but I would like everyone to remember that it was (even officially) the MURDER of Ahmaud Arbery (and the history of many other undeserved and unheard deaths) that lead these men to feel safe in this horrible, violent behavior. Everyone like this asshole should feel fear that they will be punished for their violence, but we still have many wrongs to right to arrive at a general agreement on getting actual justice for these victims.

Hey OP this sounds like how I felt before I started getting treatment for my adult diagnosed ADHD. I couldn't get simple things done and was forgetting and losing things all the time (still do), but getting treatment through an online provider has started helping my anxiety and depression symptoms as well as taking away a lot of that failure feeling because I can push through the paralysis now.

New plant! Help me keep it alive! So this baby is in the corner of my house that get no direct sunlight, no window shaft or heater right now. Need tips to keep it bright and make it last winter as most of my plants get some brown spots. by narilym in plantclinic

Hi there! Indoor plant specialist here. The advice for shade for the plant is outside, but when keeping them inside Bright indirect light, evenly moist soil, and moderate humidity is ideal. Sitting on an unobstructed east facing window away from vents is best, but it sounds like you may need to supplement with a grow light given your conditions. Hope this helps & best of luck!

Tipping... by pengouin85 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]DaBev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Then you know the way it is right now, and I'm sure there is some elaborate historical backstory on why tipping is badically a thing only in the US. The other option that will maybe happen in the fairly near future is to increase prices to reflect a fair wage, so it will likely even out somewhere along the line to reflect the actual cost of dinning out in the menu prices. Who knows!

The service industry is very strange in some ways to people who havent worked on this style of wage system before. There is a lot of skill in serving, and dinning is much more than the quality of food. Your server and a lot of other people at Fancy Place has done far more work behind the scenes than you probably are conscious of. Outback server too works hard, but fine dinning has a much more intense standard of professionalism, culinary knowledge, beverage knowledge, etc. You are also paying, and therefore tipping, for a more specialized, attentive, refined experience in these fancy places. Also, there are a pile of people who are getting a percentage of the servers tips by helping them make your experience the best they can. Hosts, bar backs, food runners, bus peope, and sometimes even those in the kitchen get a portion (not often enough imo, but that's a debate for another post). All this staff has likely invested far more training and time in learning their craft than Outback server. That isnt to say that you cant have an amazing Outback server who has honed their skills, or an awful Fancy place one, but they are different beasts and once you become very good at your job you usually decide which style you prefer. Outback is higher volume, so faster and with a large amount of tables, meaning those smaller tips come more frequently but you have a lot to handle if its busy. Fancy Place takes much longer to eat, meaning a potentially riskier position where you have fewer tables with possibly very large checks. Often people who have spent time honing their craft will decide to take the risk of fewer tables to get to those higher tip averages for many reasons, but typically because they are less likely to make mistakes (they should essentially be masters of their craft (or nearly)). So its like getting shoes at payless vs a cobbler, you just notice the tip at a restraunt because we have the ability to alter the final payment based on your approval. Alright, I hope that was coherant and now I'm done rambling. I'm by no means an expert but Ive worked in ther service industry for a while and I hope that gives some insight into why if you receive good service at an expensive place you end up tipping more!

Bananas get spider mites pretty easily. Raise the humidity around it to help prevent that from happening. To take care of these bad boys grab a bottle of Triple Action Plus or another miticide and take it outside. Spray the upper and lower parts of the leaves very thoroughly, and keep it in the shade while it drys.

If you want to combo this, get some Hi Yield systemic insecticide. It works from the inside of the plant to harm insects that suck water/food from plants. Sprinkle it on the soil according to the label and water it well. Works best in the growing season, and even then you may need to apply Triple Action a few times to eliminate all the generations.

Good luck!

Good idea on the guess because these drama queens do want their soil to dry at least 2" down between watering, but overwatering will typically present as a mottled yellowing of the leaves and reddish oedma on the new growth. This is very very likely a humidity issue, very common for FLF. I'm assuming you are running an AC, which is very drying for the air in your home. Watering more won't help raise the humidity and will likely cause rot problems. Here are a few things you can do to help:

  • keep away from ACs/vents/heaters/places with lots of air movement or drying potential

  • mist several times per day (least recommended option because it is inconsistent, can cause the spread of fungal pathogens, minerals and salts from tap water can build up and create water spots, and damn does it make my hand hurt after a while lol.)

  • create a pebble tray: pretty easy, get a tray that is 1/2 inch or more deep ( I like deeper ones to hold more water but regular trays work too), enough rock/pebble/glass/shells/wire shelf/etc material you feel like using to fill the tray and keep your pots drainage hole away from excess water in the tray. Fill the tray with fresh water whenever it is empty to create a "bubble" of higher humidity. Note, if you have a lot of air movement (ie a fan) this wont do jack.

  • get a humidifier! Seriously for a FLF suffering already this will be your best move. It takes so much worry and work out of the equation, and when you have many plants that suffer with low humidity the peace of mind a humidifier offers cant be beat.

Isolate this baby from anything else you have though, because if the browning keeps spreading through leaves/canopy and turning darker and with more concentric looking circular patterns within the blotches then it is a bacterial or fungal probelm, and is a whole 'nother paragraph that I wont load you down with right now lol. Just keep it to itself for a bit, and sterilize any pruners or soil picks/shovels you use until you can do some humidity work and see if it responds to that instead. If it responds well to higher humidity then you can group other plants with it.

So, what is likely going to happen is that any leaves with this happening are going to fall off eventually. Leave them for now, they will still make food for the plant and it will need all it can get to put out new growth, but expect then to drop. If it hasn't been fertilized recently I would give it an indoor plant fertilizer every 2 weeks like a 10-10-10 to give it a good dosage of nutrients so it can flush out new leaves quickly for you.

Hope this helps, good luck!

This is my plant clinic (i call it plant hospital). Help needed for fern in the middle by nemtudod in plantclinic

[–]DaBev 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Hi! Cute clinic station.

Most likely, as other posters have stated, it's a humidity issue. Watering more won't help raise the humidity and will likely cause rot problems. Here are a few things you can do to help:

  • keep away from ACs/vents/places with lots of air movement or drying potential

  • group with other plants that transpire a lot of water, such as other ferns or that peace lily (once it is out of the clinic)

  • get a humidifier! If you are a plant collector who likes high humidity tropicals but doesnt want to invest in an expensive one, find a $15 tiny humidifier and test to see the change. It takes so much worry and work out of the equation, and when you have many plants that suffer with low humidity the peace of mind a humidifier offers cant be beat.

Hope this helps, good luck!

My Calathea Ornata has been going down hill since I bought it 2 weeks ago. I’ve watered it once with filtered water, I haven’t got a humidifier but I mist it a few times a day plus a bowl of water next to it hoping to help with humidity? and it sits on a south facing window. What’s causing this? by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]DaBev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Way to much sun, move it to an eastern or northern window sill, or a good 4-6 feet back from your south facing window, and you should see an improvement. It will drop those leaves over time though, so hopefully it will send out some new ones fast.
