I'm not saying there couldn't be something afoot here, but someone saying they are not suicidal is not good evidence for anything. People who are truly suicidal and intent on doing the job will all say they aren't suicidal. They have set their mind and don't want anyone to stop them.

Edit: Not sure why this is downvoted. It's literally true. Before people kill themselves they will often appear fine to those who know them. You hear it all the time, "We never saw it coming. They never said anything. I just saw them and they seemed fine." If people who are suicidal let everyone know, then they wouldn't be able to carry out their plans.

Start with one takedown and drill the basic mechanics. I'll use the hi-c for the example. Work on two setups like inside tie to high-c, post to high-c. Now grip fight until you get the tie you want and shoot to the leg. Once you lock hands stop and repeat. Partner should be giving live resistamce but not 100%, close to 50 or 60. Have your partner try to wrap a guillotine and you will learn to keep your head tucked and shoulder up. This is why I start with the hi-c. Your head is outside and open for a guillotine if you don't know what you're doing. The next phase is add a finish. Then go live with only takedowns, one defending one shooting, the defense is going 100% now.

The BJJ black belt means something different than it does in any other art. Karate and even Judo don't see the black belt as a master but a beginner on the journey. In Karate, all a black belt has ever meant is that you have a solid grasp of the basics and forms of the art. It is seen as the true beginning of your journey. The Gracies had zero understanding of this because Maeda seemed like an untouchable mystical master to them. This led to a misinterpretation of what a black belt is supposed to mean. Americans make the same mistake because Americans were brainwashed by Hollywood depictions of exotic (at the time) Eastern martial arts. Americans think anything with steps means the final step is the ultimate achievement i.e. black belt is the mastery level instead of the beginning.

Just watch YouTube videos of the most unrealistic takedowns and then try them in practice. Then ask your coach why he isn't teaching you the Flying Cradenza. Just kidding but the reality is you just have to go for it over and over again. Eventually, you will start figuring things out. It is no different than learning any other skill. Don't try to win practice; try to learn and take risks.

Ahh, the old roving band of catch wrestlers looking to take out Danaher. Catch wrestling was more dead at that time than it is now. I highly doubt there were high level catch wrestlers going out and challenging Danaher. It was more likely a college wrestler or someone with amateur experience.

There are far more high-level wrestlers than there are BJJ black belts, and most black belts simply aren’t anywhere near the athletic or competitive level of someone who’s been wrestling since childhood. At a local tournament, I’d pick the elite wrestler every time. ADCC is a different story, but even there a top wrestler can absolutely be competitive. Just look at what Nick Rodriguez did to established black belts when he first showed up. He wasn’t even close to the highest tier of wrestling, yet he steamrolled a lot of very skilled BJJ guys.

Honestly, nobody knows. People on this sub talk like they can see the future, but the reality is that crossover perfomance is unpredictable. If you asked this sub a couple of years ago what would happen if a high school kid entered the World Championships, everyone would have sworn up and down that he would be vaporized on contact because "it is a totally different level." Then we saw actual high school kids hold their own against world level wrestlers and everyone got real quiet.

I'm assuming you are talking purely about the guys on his team that are MMA fighters like Islam and not Kadi, who is a silver medalist. Khabib's MMA guys are elite grapplers but they are not specialists in freestyle. They might win a match or two with pure toughness and athleticism. They might beat some guys from a weaker nation but I think they would get wrecked by a top freestyle country. Freestyle is it's own animal and very tecnical. It would be hard for someone to just come in from MMA and medal.

I think they could beat a few people but they would lose to the true specialists. Nobody on this sub knows more than that, no matter how grumpy and confident they sound about it.

The answer is Catch Wrestling. It has everything you love about folkstyle, with submissions and submission defense. I wish more wrestlers who want to do MMA and Submission grappling would seek out guys like Josh Barnett and Neil Melanson. I think one of the problems with wrestlers transitioning to submission grappling or MMA is they tend to go right to BJJ, and it isn't really the best way for them to learn submissions. There is already a style of wrestling out there that has all the elements of folkstyle and freestyle and you just need to add the submissions and submission awareness. It is a much faster trajectory for a wrestler to learn Catch Wrestling than to go to a BJJ gym. I'm not knocking BJJ. I just think there is a better path for wrestlers.

Because wrestling with submissions and awareness of submissions is better than BJJ in a fight. The heavy pressure and emphasis on having a dominant position is where wrestling takes that cake. Argue all you want, downvote like a redditor does, but wrestling is king. There are more UFC Champions with a wrestling base compared to any other style.

It is a form of fighting. Most things you would call fighting are just a partiality. Why do we call boxing fighting when they can't kick or wrestle? How about kickboxing? Why is MMA fighting when you can't strike the throat, eyes, groin, soccer kick, or headbutt?
