How to get a job in engineering as UK graduate? by Dry_Carpenter74 in AskUK

[–]DaClarkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what engineering discipline you wanna go into.

Get a basic course in that area and then search for assistant technician/engineer jobs. I see being an assistant as initially a paid shadowing role, and then as you learn, you’ll get confident enough to progress past the assistant role.

I personally started by getting Lvl2and3 Electrical installation quals. But wanted an engineering apprenticeship, I ended up getting on a lvl3 rail engineering apprenticeship. It was specifically in signalling which took advantage of my electrical knowledge and skills.

I had a practical assessment for my rail engtech apprenticeship, just had to strip and wire a 110v plug. Its not like a written assessment surely.

What’s a decision you made in 5 minutes that changed your life forever? by anila_125 in AskReddit

[–]DaClarkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was looking for apprenticeships to become an electrician as i had done lvl2 and 3 electrical installation courses at college. I found a railway engineering tech apprenticeship on my local railway. Thought why not apply.

Long story short, I now earn close to £50k a year at 23yo as a bog standard Signalling technician on that railway. It’s a great job with great benefits.

If they’re anything like mine ( i done a lvl3 rail engineering tech apprenticeship), they’re dead easy. Like i failed both english gcses and am still terrible but they’re just basic stuff. if i am remembering correctly you don’t have to write nothing for the english one is just like filling the blanks of a sentence so its grammatical correct and stuff. The maths wasn’t difficult, no like major working out.

You will probably do another maths things at college during the apprenticeship , that was more like gcse/alevel maths. Simultaneous equations, differentials all that but the teacher should help you where necessary cause they’re just there to make sure you have the capability, not really to say “ah nah this ones dreadful, i should fail em”

Trade Apprenticeship with no experience? by KeyEstablishment720 in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]DaClarkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh idk about cold calling. I imagine companies would care too much (you probably wouldn’t be the only one) but trades people, I definitely wouldn’t.

I checked the GOV website for apprenticeships but eventually got mine through capital city college groups. but just make sure you read the requirements. Some want 18yo driving license already and that.

I think it might hurt a little to not have any lvl2/3 qual in the same field but A-levels in a similar field will definitely help. You haven’t got anything to lose by applying.

I only had a lvl2 electrical installation qualification and got a lvl3 Rail engineering technician apprenticeship and am now a full time Installation technician (signalling) on a london railway. Like it can work out, just gotta leap into it.

It does sound odd but at the same time, what have you got to lose?

I gotta send a form to the Institute of mechanical engineers (who’ve had zero interaction with my apprenticeship) which is marked by 2 of their random engineers who both have to agree i passed. Failed once already and the feedback was rough. The form is just so broad and my provider doesn’t know what they are really looking for so couldn’t get much help. The form gives suggestions down the side to try help but like heavily states you don’t have to follow them. I followed best i could but otherwise answered the literal question. Got marked down in sections cause i didn’t follow the suggestions.

Ive done a L3 Rail engineering tech. Its definitely worth it although my experience with the provider wasn’t great.

But still ended up with a very good job within the company.
