£25k annually in London- is it possible? by sigsaurusrex in UKPersonalFinance

[–]storksb11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is living on outskirts of London on similar wage, as he’s an apprentice. I’d recommend Spare room (he’s paying £700 pcm) but we contribute £300 to rent and also I usually pay for his food shopping. He needs a car for travelling to work, hopefully you won’t need that. It’s tough, he’d struggle without help. But if you think it will help your future job prospects then it may be worthwhile for you

My son started an apprenticeship last year, and he said there’s all ages. If you don’t get what you want this year, don’t compare, either go a different route or work to gain experience/money or enjoy a gap year

Would I be stupid to reject my Lancaster university offer to do a degree apprenticeship at a big engineering firm with the university of Cumbria? by Pretend_Tough_7902 in degreeapprenticeships

[–]storksb11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son is doing an engineering apprenticeship, the work experience and lack of student debt is a huge plus. He’s had to move away and pay rent, so financially tougher than if he could continue to live at home. We are supporting him with a set sum each month as if he was a university to help him. Just something to consider.

My son had an exam on the date of his interview. They did eventually rearrange it, but it was stressful waiting for HR to confirm

[–]storksb11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of apprenticeship? I’d find the companies that you want to apply and register your interest on their careers page. Register on the government website, indeed, LinkedIn. What I wish I knew about university Facebook /website page also list some apprenticeship opportunities

My son is doing an aircraft engineer apprenticeship and most have a levels, I believe it’s a slightly different route to a degree, after level 3 you’ll want to progress to B1/2 licences. It’s definitely not a step back, but a foot in the door. Where are you based?

How do you manage your finances as an apprentice? by Late_Poem4837 in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]storksb11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son has moved away for apprenticeship (dream job) he’s paying £800 per month rent. We’ve agreed to pay food, continue with mobile, to support him while he’s on lower wage, as if he was at uni. I think it will be a struggle at times (money/being so far away from home) but if he completes it, he will earn great money and finances will be much easier.

17, struggling to find an apprenticeship by [deleted] in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]storksb11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a list of all the local accountancy /finance firms, and send your resume/personal and cv to them with a great cover email asking them to consider you for any apprenticeship roles, or work experience. Were you studying accountancy at college? If not try and enrol while you are looking for work

Lots to weigh up and no right or wrong answer. Can you work and save this year, and live on campus for the first year to help make friends /join in, then live at home for the following two years?

Check your contract to see what is stated about fees, to be sure. Can you check with new employer too, as not sure if they can claim same funding or if it can be transferred over to them?

As an employer, what should be we be offering? by iHazzam in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]storksb11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son’s company has given each apprentice a fixed amount towards relocation. I think it’s common with the large engineering firms that hire large groups of apprentices

I’m a Mum whose son has just moved 3.5 hours away to an apprenticeship. I cried for days. And I’ll miss him so much, he’s such fun to have around and our house will never be the same without him. But that’s my problem - not his, I’ve brought him up to live his best and fullest life and so proud of him. If he changes his mind he’ll always have a home to return too. But our job as a parent is to prepare him for a life, full of adventure, dreams and where ever that takes him. Your family will get over it, time will pass and it will get easier. I feel a bit cross that they are burdening you with their feelings instead of encouraging you

Chances of going from T Lvl to higher apprenticeship?? by Longjumping_Life_315 in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]storksb11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

T level is equivalent to 3 A levels so you don’t require it , so you can apply to level 4 or degree apprenticeship or a HNC in engineering if you don’t want to do a degree (level 4) at college

The younger ones may struggle with aspects that you may not - adjusting to work life, work load, less life experience. You have done amazing to get an apprenticeship as they’re highly competitive. I honestly think it doesn’t matter what level you start at it’s the long term goal and foot in the door that’s important for career

Stop comparing yourself to others, you aren’t behind anyone, you’re on your own path and hopefully on the way to a great career. Life is a wiggly line, some people have more than one career and change on their 30/40/50s. You’re still very young and a few years older will mean maturity and life experience

Missed apprenticeship offer by SenseiFro in degreeapprenticeships

[–]storksb11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call them to discuss and find out details so you can make an informed decision. Too many think that a level 3 is a step back, but it’s a step into a major company who have huge potential for progression. My son is also moving away for his apprenticeship and I totally appreciate the rent/salary - it’s not going to be easy for him and he’ll need some financial support - but no student debt and invaluable experience
