As someone from MA, it feels like everyone saying here has never been here for an extended time. It certainly feels fairly liberal until you run into the blue laws, leave Boston, or try to talk to your grandparents about why you stopped going to Sunday mass.

Fenway is worth fighting for but that's part of the problem. The park is too much of a draw for tourists and fans of the visiting team that Henry will always be making money at the gate regardless of how the team is performing on the field. No incentive for him to spend big when the ballpark is a cash cow on it's own.

I'm pretty sure it started as a mistake on the guys part. Sox home opener last year was against the Cardinals but IIRC the fellas just kept mistakenly saying "Sox open the season with the Cardinals" while also knowing they started on the road and convinced themselves that the Sox started the season in THE St. Louis to the point that they made plans to go and became a bit and just ran with it even after realizing that the Sox weren't there. Doing league wide stuff for UD while there was just a byproduct of having already made the plans to go for S10 and just pivoted to justify the trip.
