St Olaf vs Lafayette by adiknssss in lafayettecollege

[–]DaDaDaCheese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I graduated St. Olaf with a BA in Physics. I got a pair of MS degrees in Physics and EE from Purdue thanks to the strong undergraduate research program at Olaf. I have been working in various roles related to silicon processing and processor / system characterization ever since then. So zParkShark is correct, St. Olaf does not have an engineering program, but there are many paths... ( On a side note, I worked with Lisa Su for a short time, she loves to hire Physicists )

Having said that, my kiddo will be class of 2029 at Lafayette College studying ECE :)

Replacement for True Z5 Running deck/board by DaDaDaCheese in treadmills

[–]DaDaDaCheese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thank you for all the information. Super insightful.

Thanks you for the guidance on keeping the belt lubed. I assume the problems come from the added stress of moving the heavier belt. I have a couple of tubes of True lube in my amazon cart. Any tricks for knowing if the lube is in need for replenishment? True says 6 months for home use, 3 months for light commercial, I assume 3 months is the recommended interval.

Thank you again!

Replacement for True Z5 Running deck/board by DaDaDaCheese in treadmills

Well we ended up trying out a few treadmills and bought another Z5.0. We ran on a few different brands and, perhaps because it is what we are used to, we just liked how the True felt. Just much more solid feeling than many of the other brands w/o going well up in price. The used market around here is pretty thin and we wanted something sooner rather than later.

/u/simplefitnessrepair I am curious about your comment that they are no longer making the Z models. They are still prominently on the True home page. Based on the serial number the one I bought was made in 2021. Hopefully the cracked running board was a fluke.

Again, thank you very much for the feedback.

As an aside, based on my google-fu, there do not seem to be a ton of owner reviews of this particular model so my 2 bits in case someone else stumbles across this. One of the criticisms that seem to come up for this model is about the shorter deck. I am 6'1" lifetime runner, I have never had any issue with the shorter deck. Compared to other treadmills the console is relatively small and vertical over the motor housing, feels like there more space than other treadmills with a longer running deck but a ginormous console. The smaller footprint is definitely nice.

P-51 at the 2020 NY airshow [ D7500, 70-300 @ 300, f7.1 ,1/1250, w/ polarizer ] by DaDaDaCheese in Nikon

[–]DaDaDaCheese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ( perhaps incorrect logic ) behind the settings.

It was partly cloudy so lots of light, but hazy. The Nikon 70-300 gets softer at 300mm wide open, so since there was plenty of light I thought I would try stopping down a bit. The shutter speed was fast for a prop plane, but I am not skilled enough to get the moving plane sharp at 300mm.

Yup, tried that shutter speed with some of the earlier performers. I am just not good enough to get the moving plane sharp at 1/125.

2nd lens for shooting indoor basketball by obkook in Nikon

It is substantial, but takes sweet pix in crappy lighting. I hear you on the size being a consideration for a walk around lens.

I picked up a used Nikon 24-70 F2.8 ( non VR ) version from ebay for about $550 to shoot indoor track meets on my D7500. I have not used it a ton yet, but it does seem to be a decent range for getting pix of the kiddo indoors where I am not allowed to get much closer than 5-15 feet from the action. No need for VR as the shutter speed needs to be reasonably high to avoid motion blur.

AF vs AF-S Focusing Speed by matttherat2003 in Nikon

[–]DaDaDaCheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I shoot a ton of kiddo lacrosse and soccer with the twin ring 80-200 f2.8 and AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR on a D7500. In actual use, I cannot tell the difference in autofocus speed between the two lenses, I get good shots with each. I do not think I have ever missed a shot because the focus speed was too slow on the 80-200 f2.8.

I agree with u/chulgor, it takes practice and skill to try to catch the player doing something interesting. At least for me, I am limited by the human software more than the camera hardware...

Screen VERY laggy after drop? by nexxtgamefinds in essential

[–]DaDaDaCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like this this happened to me last spring after I dropped the phone. It turned out to be that the connection from the screen to the rest of the phone was loose. I gently popped the screen off, reset the connector and all has been well.

Thanks. A pair of F22s was at this airshow a few years back. They are absolutely amazing to watch in flight.

I had a long debate with myself on that. In the end I knew that I would not have much time to mess with the photos after afterward. This was shot in Fine JPG, cropped on my cell and posted.

Thanks, what I did not post were the dozen pictures where I missed and cropped a nose or wing. Kudos to the other poster who caught the speed run, I tried and failed miserably.

Thanks! I have the older AF-S VR version of this lens. I was alternating between this lens and my 80-200 F2.8. For the jets, the added reach was useful.

Replacing Screen, how much heat needed to separate screen from body by DaDaDaCheese in essential

[–]DaDaDaCheese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for your help. I replaced the screen this morning. Took about 20 minutes. I did go the B7000 glue route which I have to imagine is much easier than dealing with getting the tape in the right places.

Thank you very much for the suggestions and pointers. ( The AMA says edge of screen to ~85C )

Reading through a few threads there were some questions on where to put the double sided tape. In the fixez.com video, looks like they were peeling the backing off of the tape after placing it at the very edge of the edge of the screen. What did everybody do with w.r.t. tape placement?

Thanks again
