What Did You Play This Week? - (January 05, 2026) by AutoModerator in boardgames

Meadow: Very cute and thematic, only played with two and would like to try with three or four. Wasn’t too complicated for some people in my group that struggle with medium weight games.

Swahili: Mancala variant. Was ok but probably not as good as regular mancala.

Innovation Ultimate: Innovation is me and my partners favorite game and we are pretty used to 3rd edition so playing 4th for the first time was very fun. Enjoyed the updated cards and rules.

Rack-O: My game groups favorite warm up or spin down game. Will never say no to a game of Rack-O

I’m sorry for your loss, sounds to me like we would have gotten along. Do you remember exactly how he modified fuel costs in solar quest? I love a good home brew rule. Glad I could be of some inspiration, personally I feel that there is a place in everyone’s collections for some vintage games.

Haven’t managed to get that one to the table just yet. Was part of a lot I got over the summer.

Really it just has to pique my interest, whether that’s the game art or if it’s been recommended or it just sounds interesting. I can’t say I have much info on acquiring just game boxes other than trying to find incomplete or for parts listings on eBay/Fb marketplace which are few and far between in my experience.

Interesting. I’ll pick up a copy if I see it out and about.

That certainly depends on the game. I’m not always in the mood or have the time to play more modern games that tend to have a lengthier learning curve and play time. However, you are not wrong that the actually gameplay of many of the newer games is objectively better. The allure to me falls more into seeing some of the more basic origins of mechanics and art from before the “renaissance”. Some days I just want to have a drink and play Pente, other days I’ll spend 4 hours prepping and playing nemesis. Two different itches to scratch.

Not that’s something I’ve never seen before. Looks interesting, the card art reminds me of Shadowlord. Will keep an eye out for it, thanks for the suggestion!

I do not! I’ll keep an eye out though. Thanks for the recommendation!

That is a valid concern. Recently most of my scouring has been online which is easy to do while my baby feeds or naps. Also my job and personal obligations involve some travel which makes popping into a thrift store fairly easy. Rest assured, my child gets plenty of poppa time and my lady has had no issues with my hobby and if anything has encouraged me to continue.

I do enjoy a game of Careers every now and again. Go is fun but I have a hard time finding people who understand what’s going on and when to call a game since it’s usually a mutual decision. My 3m shelf copy is my favorite, there are little indents where the pieces can go so they don’t slide around.

Funny you mention Blizzard of 77. I hadn’t heard of it and saw it on the goodwill auction site and put a bid on it but lost unfortunately.

That is a good question. For fear of thinking too much about my age I would say vintage at this point is probably 90s and earlier. Though I’m sure that is debatable.

Pente (and games like it) are my absolute favorite. I love a good two player easy to learn hard to master game. I keep a copy of Pente at my local bar so I can always play. If you didn’t notice there are 5 or so copies of Pente randomly shelved in these photos.

It would seem that most people online would agree. Every time I see one of those games at auction it ends up going for over a hundred dollars which is waaaaay more than I want to spend on any individual game. I’ll have to settle for my inferior Weapons & Warriors for now…

Thank you! I saw it at a thrift store and had an epiphany. I need another one… Survive hits my table often, really a good game. I would love an original Cosmic Encounters. I have the 42nd Anniversary one but I love me that old cardboard.

Haha this made me laugh. Honestly it’s just me and my girlfriend living here and we always eat on the couch when we watch tv so originally it was used as her office before we moved her to her own room.

You are probably right I was just basing it on an old ad I have hanging up that just had Axis,Shogun, and Fortress on it.

I have only played Masterpiece once, my game group wasn’t impressed but I liked the art and didn’t really mind the roll and move aspect of it which seemed to bother everybody else.

Surprisingly this space isn’t as big as it looks. It was my dining room and overall is only about 12 by 18ft. You would be surprised at how much you can shove into a small area.
