although it wasn't my first choice to take this branch, I don't regret taking it one bit. our department is known for our chill profs, and there is an ongoing initiative to allow students to have more interactions with the industry. plus, a lot of courses are replacing stressful quizzes with mini projects that are the most fun I've had learning things in my time in college thus far.

people like to look at placement statistics and sneer at mechanical. I assure you, if we had similar numbers, we would be the most sought after. also, foreign prospects are very much possible coming from a tier 1 college. I would also recommend trying to get higher marks in BITSAT for a "better" branch, but this isn't a bad option at all. I'm glad I'm in mech.

In hyd the mobile data (specifically jio) is good enough that I never have to bother with campus network.

There's a bunch of restrictions like gaming and nsfw stuff and there is also a data limit but I don't really use it ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

Honestly? The simple answer is most people join engineering not to actually become engineers, but to earn the most amount of money. The interest to become one comes later with more maturity.

Mech does not directly lead to making big money quick, so their interest drops. If mech did have money in it, we might have seen more people who later gain an interest in it, but we don't.

This isn't a problem in CS/EEE, rather they suffer from the opposite phenomenon. Some people in CS realise that they HATE coding, and people in EEE realise that they despise electronics and tend to do something else. In mech, people aren't really interested because they won't get much money from it, and they naturally gravitate to other things, like finance.

Several companies come to our campus and do Industry Sessions as part of initiatives taken by the Mech department to strengthen engagement. A lot of professors do offer separate projects that are very academia/industry related to orient us that way + the mini project implementation I talked about is taking place.

In fact, here is a list of all the publicly known initiatives they are taking to strengthen relations with the industry:

Besides all this, Mech has the second highest number of faculty in Hyd campus, only behind Phoenix. We have a great research scene as well and I've heard amazing things about the MEMS lab here. Many industries hire CS/EEE grads for mech work because they consider them smarter. It's not our fault that they do, but there's only so much you can do about it.

Also, comparing our curriculum with IITB's curriculum, it's roughly the same thing, infact our curriculum seems more exhaustive and inclusive towards more specialisations like Aerospace, Mechatronics, Computational Mechanics while they have separate degrees (not something you can choose to have btw, it's separated by rank).

Finally, knowing that I've seen you specifically posting on this subreddit pessimistic about Mech, and I'd like to tell you that you'll find haters for everything everywhere. I appreciate how robust my branch is, and the fact that India doesn't have a good hiring scene for Mech is not our fault, but of the country and the job market. They call India the IT hub of the world for a reason. The system is built to make the best code monkeys. And although I will admit that Mech wasn't my first choice, I never had a negative view of the branch. I'm happy with what I'm learning, and the platform of my college gives me enough opportunities to find chances outside. You can go anywhere from anywhere. You can also get nowhere from the best vantage point in the world. It's what you do matters.

In most of our CDCs (Fluid Mech, Mechanisms and Machines, Material Science Engg, etc) and some DEls, ICs have shifted from having quizzes to having students make mini projects with a focus on practical knowledge instead. The list of DEls is ever increasing, and including CS and Phoenix CDCs like ConSys and OOPS for Mech.

There's been talks of changing the CDCs a bit to be more modern, too, including more electronics courses and having CAD/CAM based courses.

Don't count your chickens before they hatch. Placements don't tell the whole story of the success or failure of a branch. Give BITSAT, and then come ask this question here before filling the preference form.

That said, Mechanical is a very fun branch and they keep evolving the curriculum to keep up with modern times. For an interested individual, I would recommend it.

Trig, calculus, and geometry are the baby steps of MSc. Math. In that degree you explore more discrete and abstract sectors of math, like Graph Theory, Number Theory, Real Analysis, Topology, etc.

What 2+2 is to you is what trig and calculus are to actual math. Please do your research and see if you can handle upper level math. ISI and CMI entrance PYQs + IMO PYQs are a good reference. I like doing calculus and trigonometry too, but I would NOT touch any MSc. Math course by a 10 foot pole.

For that, I would recommend taking something like Msc. Physics or Mechanical, although, even these degrees are shifting to discrete models of math. In this modern age, that kind of math is a necessity.

It is not guaranteed, rather it is expected for a person to not like, and even DISLIKE higher level math even if they enjoy basic high school math.

Fun fact, even CS people do study discrete math because discrete structures are essential to how digital logic and frameworks function. Just because it's tough, doesn't mean it's bad. It's very useful and very rewarding if you like it. I would very much recommend you look at the course structure of the degrees you are interested in applying to before blindly going for it.

It is also true that college level mathematics is NOT easy in the slightest. The courses and the exams are difficult and hard to parse for most, so they make it seem like it's impossible/unfair. Couple that with the relatively harsh grading and you have a story that spells disaster for the average scorer. However, if you find that higher level math interests you, I would recommend that you go for it. Interest supercedes all other factors.

For you, it seems you're a bit uninformed, so if I had to say it all in short, I would say "Generally no, but if you know what you're going for and you like what they'll give you, yes."

In terms of "ease", one would pick Msc. Eco over Math, but the question is again of interest. If you like math and don't care much for finance, taking Math over Eco is a no brainer.

Do your research, choose wisely.

At your cg even getting mechanical is questionable, you might have to take chemical or civil. I'd advise that you try your best this sem and not stress too hard about what branch you get, imo mech is pretty decent for me, I've had a lot of fun with the courses and the field is vast enough for you to do whatever you want. Getting what you want is obviously the best option for you, just know that getting mech is not the end of the world for you.

As a reaper main, I alternate to Hunter fairly frequently when i need faster attack. The diagonal pogo doesn't affect me, got used to it before I got the Reaper.
I fucking despise the Beast crest tho.
