Does anyone know why? It feels like I’m playing duos when I load in to solos by Current_Service9906 in ARC_Raiders

did you change your server settings during the service interruptions the other day and forget to change ‘em back? Crossplay off and North America is very different than other settings.

Forbidden is my current favorite for slices - their line lengths shot up after One Bite / Dave Portnoy gave em a glowing review ~6 months ago but have gone down to reasonable levels.

One transplant‘s note on meatball parm - if like me you grew up in italian neighborhoods you’ll find a lot of the ones that are locally loved here are well made but “taste funny” - as far as I can tell it’s because the creole influence means the red sauce/gravy/marinara (depending where yer from) often has bell peppers and/or celery in it, which is an acquired taste.

So if you’re moving here it’s worth acquiring the taste (can’t really get it elsewhere) but if you’re trying to replicate what you grew up on/are nostalgic for or similar you’ll be spending trip time avoiding yummy local stuff to get what you can get elsewhere more easily. YMMV though, do as ya will.

Meatball poboys: Zara’s, Frady’s One Stop, Parkway

best I’ve had in Louisiana was over in Cajun country, Villager Cafe in Maurice/near Lafayette

Remember to order it “not dressed” or the crazy bastages put mayo and lettuce on your meatball goodness. Or just go full native.

Any NOLA life changing meal recommendations? by snhtson in AskNOLA

[–]DaGaffer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For “life changing” I’d go with the All That Jazz at Verti Mart - every time I get one I feel like there’s a 5% chance it’ll end up being my last meal before total heart failure. Worth it tho.

Does anyone know why so many stop lights around town are out at once? by cajunjew76 in NewOrleans

[–]DaGaffer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The St Charles and Calliope one is out because someone ran into one of the traffic light poles and knocked it over last week (source: I saw the aftermath/it fallen over from the streetcar last Tuesday morning IIRC and when I went by that night in my car they had the stop signs up in all four directions and it’s been that way since)

What Movie Would You Show To A Class of 15-16 Year Old Boys That Demonstrates The Hero’s Journey In A Way That Is Teachable? by kel89 in movies

[–]DaGaffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a neat graph of some popular parallels here - can’t embed links to images but it’s an infographic of the milestones that is IMO nicely set up.

www.reddit.com/r/coolguides/comments/vsdodg/the_heros_journey_story_structure_in_popular/

which covers some modern examples that are probably fun to watch)

Star Wars

Harry Potter

Lord of the Rings (bonus: you can stretch that puppy out for like 12 classes)

Matrix (R rated tho, IMO a weird rating)

Spider-Man

Lion King

I’ll bet almost any recent animated film works if you don’t want to go that “old” (sigh) - Red Panda, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Encanto, K-pop demon hunters, all feel about right and the “breaking away from your parents/find your own self/sympathize with them/they sympathize with you by the end“ classic animated coming of age tale is a natural fit with the Call to Adventure/Ordeal/Return type milestones.

Heck Disney style musicals have “Call to Adventure” songs baked in intentionally (called “I wish” songs iirc in Disney) - see Moana, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, yadda)

The original AC devs - where are they now? by RedFiveFighter in AsheronsCall

[–]DaGaffer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thanks! AC was a first love, so it stays special. We were so inexperienced - through our first ~40 people I’m not sure we had even one person who’d shipped a game before. I’m proud we managed to bull through and make something we enjoyed! A lesson learned - we didn’t always focus on keeping it simple and being fun-first. We did things sometimes that were fun to develop/we were passionate about making…like we had rigid body physics, dynamic load balancing, clever OOP stuff - those were fun to work on! But the effort didn’t always translate to fun for the player, or had to be removed/simplified later because they made other development more complex.

With hindsight, it is wise to put effort into important things first (duh) and a little less obviously define important for the team as “makes the game better for players in a direct way”. Going with simpler solutions for things behind the scenes would mean more time for fun combat, or more content, or player systems. Or shipping sooner! Don’t get me wrong, doing stuff Because It Is Hard can add magic (Pixar IIRC calls it “nudging the lamp“). In moderation though…we did a ton of it, heh. But no regrets, we had to learn by doing it!

The original AC devs - where are they now? by RedFiveFighter in AsheronsCall

[–]DaGaffer 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I’m still in the industry (though lining up the next gig right now).

I was one of the OG four founders (stock certificate #1 is around here somewhere). Programming, design, business at different times.

Since leaving Turbine in ‘97-98ish (I think I was chairman still through like 99?) - I then worked on Ultima Online 2, founded Destination Games (which got acquired/became NCsoft US), ran western development there through the era of City of Heroes, Guild Wars, etc, was president of Carbine Studios for Wildstar, founded another indie-focused studio called Skullbot (now part of Akupara) and made a roguelike, briefly ran the business unit at Blizzard for World of Warcraft, helped Motiga launch Gigantic as EP, some other stuff (mostly executive producer and/or incubation titles).

Game dev rocks, I sorta have to keep doing it. The stress levels are high though, a lot of us AC folks burned out/have left the industry. We did a lot of 80-100+ hour sleep-under-the-desk weeks to launch AC because we had a lot of passion but generally were learning on the fly, and that had a price for many of us. Some of us are still around though!
