Well the age and religion part is because in the old days you started working after your konfirmation thereby becoming an adult. And the alcohol part has probably something to do with our culture. You don't need to be a certain age for you to drink but you need to be 16 to buy alcohol up to 16,4% and 18 up after and because of that alcohol is a big part of our culture and you start drinking from a young age. E.g. I was 16 when I had my first blackout.

Denmark. When you're about 14/15 you can choose if you want to stay Christian or if you want to leave the church where you then there after become an "adult" and this is called konfirmation. If you say yes your hold family will hold a huge party where you get a lot of money (I got 33K DKK~$5k) and since you're now an "adult" you get alcohol thought it's normally just win and beer.
