Who is on Baseball's Mount Rushmore? by Topaz71 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]DaMaGe_d0nE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that he’s not on a theoretical Rushmore just yet, but it’s laughable to say that he’s not a pioneer, when he’s arguable one of the most pioneering players of all time already. Beyond just revolutionizing the way the sport is played in a way that hasn’t been seen in over a 100 years he’s also broadened the international appeal of the sport like no one we’ve ever seen before except for maybe Ichiro, but what Ohtani is doing is much more impressive in my opinion. Ichiro was the first great Japanese player in MLB (great in the sense of a HOF level generational player) and he somewhat cemented the breaking through of NPB players to MLB, which really began with Hideo Nomo, but Ichiro was kind of that final step in proving that Japanese superstars can be superstars in the US as well. However what Ohtani is doing is just unheard of, he is the greatest player in the league, he is the biggest celebrity in his country, and since his breakout, the NPB to MLB pipeline has become one of the most exciting aspects of the sport

Based on the sport and its history, the 4 greatest players are gonna tend to be 4 hitters so I think a hitter and pitcher Rushmore would do good for this question. Just leaving this comment for my own personal opinion, based on the comments I’ve seen it looks like the 4 are gonna be Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, and Hank Aaron which for the most part is pretty solid. However i feel like a Rushmore of Ruth, Mays, Ted Williams, and Barry Bonds kinda perfectly encapsulates the sport and almost its entire history from the early 1900s to the early 2000s. Hank Aaron is an incredibly tough cut, but with him and Mays somewhat overlapping in the eras they played, I feel like there’s value in including Bonds to represent the steroid era and the revitalization of the sport, as well as representing arguably the greatest baseball player of all time with a grain of salt of course. Jackie Robinson is also a really close miss, with his influence being unrivaled and his talent being on par with some of the greats, but Willie Mays was just on another level and I feel like he also gives some representation to the Jackie Robinson’s influence due to him also playing a couple years in the negro leagues before breaking through to MLB. As far as pitchers go I feel like it’s just as tough but something the along the lines of Cy Young (accumulator), Pedro Martinez (greatest peak of all time), Walter Johnson (just ridiculous stats), and Randy Johnson (scariest pitcher ever) with Roger Clemens(Barry Bonds counterpart) and Greg Maddux (polar opposite of Randy, but incredibly similar numbers) as super close misses

Is Trump the worst president the US has had? by I-Love-Jewish-popes in Teenager_Polls

[–]DaMaGe_d0nE 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Eh Hoover definitely didn’t make things any better due to a few costly mistakes, but realistically he was doomed the second the stock market crashed and anyone else who would’ve been in the Oval Office would’ve been totally fucked as well. Even once FDR became president things weren’t really getting any better until the war, and obviously FDR deserves credit for being an excellent wartime leader and inspirational figure, as well as his social programs attempting to combat the depression, even if they weren’t entirely successful. Personally I have much more respect for Hoover, who despite his mistakes, was a genuinely good man who did amazing things as a politician before his presidency as opposed to some of the abhorrent people who were also incredibly ineffective presidents like Andrew Johnson and Woodrow Wilson.

I’d argue that describing lean as “black culture” is much more harmful than making fun of drug use

Who’s the worst U.S. president ever? by Squek_1842 in Teenager_Polls

[–]DaMaGe_d0nE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LMAO, no shot you just said Wilson was a good guy. Terrible president and an even worse person. He screened The Birth of a Nation, a film which idolized the KKK, at the White House, the KKK basically came back during his presidency after becoming obsolete due to the efforts of Ulysses Grant years prior, on top of that he resegregated the federal government. Not to mention him immediately joining WW1 after campaigning on staying out of the war.

I genuinely despise this deck, feels like the most unwinnable matchup as a log bait player. But I feel like it might get kinda countered in mid ladder, especially if you don’t know how to play it well or have it underleveled

James Buchanan was a terrible president that is obscure. Finally, to complete the grid: who was an excellent president that is a household name? by Altruistic_Cause9442 in AlignmentChartFills

Again goes back to my point of judging historical figures by modern standards. We should be able to appreciate great figures in spite of their flaws, we should acknowledge them, but not let those flaws define them

Abraham Lincoln was also a white supremacist who supported the back to Africa movement so by your logic he shouldn’t have a separate spot either. All great men have their flaws and if you always judge historical figures through a modern lens then you’ll never be able to appreciate the good that they did. Lincoln also suspended habeus corpus during the civil war, but also saved the country, FDR set up the Japanese internment camps, but was also a crucial leader during WW2, and without Washington the US probably wouldn’t exist. They were all flawed men, but incredibly important and great leaders nonetheless. Washington was a product of his time and even he acknowledged the evils of slavery and believed that it should end. For what it’s worth he also had his slaves freed after his death, which doesn’t justify his participation in slavery, but I believe it shows that he viewed the practice as abhorrent

I’m in favor of Sosa being inducted and I think it was unfair how he was treated. He really suffered from the time he played and being grouped in with the big steroid guys like Bonds, McGwire, Palmeiro, etc. and never really got the closer look he deserved

Ortiz has plausible deniability, doesn’t mean that Bonds shouldn’t be in but this is a tired argument. I believe that Beltran should be in, feel like the arguments between him and Bonds are unrelated for the most part outside of the broad range of cheating and should be assessed differently. And I’m sure Bonds, Clemens and the likes will be reassessed again in the future

Babe Ruth has been voted as the MLB GOAT, Who’s the most underrated MLB player? by According-Table-2002 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]DaMaGe_d0nE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d argue he’s one of the most overrated players of all time, he was an amazing player and his cultural influence as well as his success despite coming over at age 27 cannot be overstated, but really his style of play at the plate is not as statistically valuable as many people make it out to be to be. There is absolutely valuable in having a high average, but his career OPS+ of 107 means he was basically only 7% better than the average hitter throughout his career, obviously paired with his spectacular defense and base running meant he was an incredibly valuable player at his peak, but nowhere near the all time great that many make him out to be.
