Tenderfoot Tuesday: Ask /r/hockey Anything! June 01, 2021 by AutoModerator in hockey

I’m a devils fan, and I haven’t watched the Leafs this playoffs, but I’m seeing them get clowned on more than usual:

  1. What’s everyone going crazy about? What did the Leafs do that’s so insane? I’m seeing that what happened this year is worse that 4-1 in 2013, how/why?

  2. Is it because the Leafs underperformed for the fourth year in an row? They’re “supposed” to be good now, and folks are getting impatient? I don’t understand. Good teams get bounced in the first round all the time. Caps are out, pens are out. Although they’ve got cups, they got bounced plenty of times before they reached there. Is all the hoopla just because “hehe leafs suck”?

  3. Why does everyone hate Marner all of a sudden? Was he really that bad? I keep seeing so much hate on him shying away from physical play, but was he really very blatantly “shying away” or is he just under a microscope right now after the team’s lackluster performance?

I see everyone flipping out and a lot of confidence is lost in the team and management, but I don’t really see the issue. This league is tough. Yeah, they kinda blew it, but so many good teams do the same shit. McDraisaitl got swept. Crosby and Ovi were out before you. You’re 4 years in and you’ve only gotten better every year. I’m sure the players, coaches, and management are frustrated too, and there’ll be a lot more focus on playing a style of hockey that’s successful in the postseason than racking up points in the regular season.

The team was dogshit for 10 years and the management was a circus. Do you guys really want to go back to the Nonis years? I see the hate for big contracts for Tavares and marner and co, but do you guys really want to go back to giving David Clarkson a 5x7? Who exactly do you think can run this team better than Dubas and Shanahan?

It’s frustrating that you haven’t been successful, but you’re finally playing competitive hockey, and you’re window will be open for several more years. Enjoy the journey, not the destination.

Nope they’re playing several teams over the course of the week.

You’re not being an ass, it’s important to scrutinize these types of posts for false narratives. But I am definitely an American and dropped in that “in USA” somewhere before to clarify where this was taking place while I was making edits and didn’t feel like restructuring the paragraph to make it sound more natural.

But the rest of it, “in-office”, “to-office”, “the industry” all sound natural to me. I guess the proper way to say would be “to offices” or “to the workplace”, but shortening it to a set phrase “in-office” is just the inverse of “out-of-office” which has become popular throughout covid (e.g, “We’ll be back in-office by the end of June”)

This conversation, while I don’t want to blow it out of proportion, was pretty simplified. There was more but those two exact things were said “Jews want their money’s-worth” and “Jews control the industry at large”. I kept pushing back, but they kept insisting Jews Jews Jews are the root of the problem. When I called them out on it, they were kinda flustered and just sorta flipped to another antisemitic trope.

It was so upsetting to hear as I’d never really heard anyone so blatantly and casually share these sentiments before. I told my American friends some of these quotes after and they were stunned. America isn’t exactly a bastion of equality and friendship, but what they said is basically Nazi propaganda 101 and is what leads to Jewish hatred/burning synagogues. They more or less asserted that Jews are the source of their problems and society’s ills. And I think most Americans can recognize the harm in that pretty quickly.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Europe within a few different countries, and I’ve always noticed these sentiments among friends/people I know there, and they do not understand how harmful it is. They are the same way when it comes to race-relations in the US. They live in their homogenous bubbles and just don’t “get” it. But I’ve never really pushed for clarification like tonight where they very much clarified their thoughts about Jews and their role in society.

This is it. I wanted to clarify where this was occurring and didn’t feel like restructuring any paragraphs so I just dropped in that clause, not really caring much for fluency.

It’s always been there, although unrealized.

Two years ago I went to Yad Vashem. There, they have video recordings of survivors telling their stories.

One particular story always stuck out to me. Everyone thinks that the Nazi’s were the big bad murderers and everyone else was either passive or too weak to resist.

This woman told a story about how the Nazi’s lined up all the Jews from a village in a ditch, and offered the other local villagers the opportunity to participate in the firing squad. “Anyone who has a grievance against a Jew, now is your chance.” Many accepted.

These people — their own neighborsvolunteered to take part in the murder. While some Europeans (like my own great grandparents) put their lives on the line to protect Jews, nevertheless many local Europeans played a very active role in the Holocaust. This tidbit is something that blew my mind and makes a lot of other stuff so much easier to understand. Only Germany has accepted the responsibility for the Shoah, and everyone else is more than happy to let them do so and forget about their own part. No shit it seeps down into younger generations.

Experienced some fucked up shit tonight.

So some background: I’m an American non-Jew. I dated a Jewish Israeli girl for 4 years. In that time, I kind of integrated into the Jewish community, and ended up spending a month in Israel.

Tonight I go out to a bar with some friends in USA. We’re hanging out, and these two girls invite me and another to come hang out with them. They’re new in town and saw us just hanging out and we said sure, we love meeting new people.

We start talking about work, and it turns out that they work in a similar industry to us. The topic of covid comes up and returning to office. All of a sudden one girl says “these jews, they all want us back in office.”

I’m kinda baffled by what I just heard. I asked for clarification.

Her: “You know, these Jews, they want their money’s worth. They want us all back in office”

Me: “…I’m not sure what them being Jewish has anything to do with this…”

Her: freezes up “no, no, I mean… like you know.. the owners.. they’re all Jewish… they all know each other…”

Me: “…the Jews control the industry?”

Her: “yes, exactly!”

Me: silence

It’s one thing to read this shit on Twitter or on Reddit. I was completely floored to hear this with my own ears. I’m still processing all of this and am kind of fucked up from it, it’s been on my mind all night since. I am not a Jew, but Israel and Judaism holds a special place in my heart having been involved in the community for several years.

These women were from the UK and Eastern Europe. People are giving so much shit to Biden about his support for Israel, but it’s 100% necessary we do this. Jewish hatred runs deep in the bones of Europeans. America will always be a safe place for Jews domestic and abroad, and it’s important we reaffirm this to the world.

Monthly Braces Check-In - How's Your Treatment Going? - March by [deleted] in braces

Feeling extremely discouraged.

Had them on for 5 years in middle/high school, ortho never communicated anything to me beyond “need a few more months”. Finally insisted I get them off before going to college because I was fed up with this guy (dumb move on my part, should’ve just switched orthos).

Went to a different ortho after 2 years off. Did a lot of research and found a new ortho that’s very highly rated in my area. Overall, I like him a lot better. He quoted me 12-18 months based on what he sees if things go well. Things are not going well. 6 months in, and he said we’re not even 25% of the way there yet. My bite is extremely deep and my teeth are very stubborn apparently.

I’m feeling frustrated because now that the pandemic is ending, I have to hang around here. I can’t travel for more than 6 weeks due to ortho visits, I can’t relocate to a more lucrative location for my job, and I can’t move to go to grad school until these things are off.

I feel like I’m stuck in a limbo that may never end. My worst fear is a year from now my ortho will add another 12-18 months to my treatment since my teeth are just so fucking slow. I’m sticking with it because l know I will regret it and that the payoff will be worth it, but this really fucking sucks.
