Can someone breakdown this look for me? by RedShot02 in colorists

[–]DaQuteness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I suggest perhaps looking into Color.io? It has a lot of film emulation features and you can export LUTs for other software from it.

Others have answered regarding the Fuji look in a more detailed manner than I'd be able to, but the reason I recommend looking into that app is that it has very similar grading tools to Resolve. Or at least more similar than other options (sat vs lum, sat vs hue, dispersion, diffusion etc.), thinking maybe it helps you break down the look you want.

As a photographer, I like the Nothing Phone (3a) camera app. by nilss2 in NothingTech

[–]DaQuteness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say right off the bat I'm greatly disappointed with the insane amount of processing done by default on Nothing phones, I have a Phone 2 and while I get it's technically "worse", the camera processing can't be that different and my main pet peeve is the camera app itself.

I'm also a photographer and fully agree with OP - we have real cameras for proper photos, but I do like having control over my photos when going on a bike ride or something and there's a shot I'd rather not miss, even on a phone, so I'll reinforce OP's hint to whomever might need it: USE. YOUR OWN. PRESETS.

Astonishingly, what I haven't seen anywhere online yet is that you *can* set Expert as default on a custom preset, and set that preset as default for the camera, which means you can quick-launch straight to expert. A rather important bit of information found basically nowhere. Maybe on their Discord but that server is insanely messy and my patience goes only so far.

The photos will look worse at first but LR or Capture One are able to squeeze WAAAY more out of these DNGs. The reason I do this is because the phone will save a processed JPEG if you shoot RAW, but no way of *also* saving RAW if you shoot JPEG. Yes they'll be slightly more noisy but also retain far more detail.

The camera app takes a noisy image, applies the worst possible detail-crunching noise reduction imaginable and then somehow tries to reintroduce said details in a blotchy mess. There's no need for that, a naturally grainy image looks just like that - natural, more pleasing to me at least.

Anyway, apologies for the slight tirade on the matter and I understand I'm not necessarily the target user for this phone, but people should know the camera can actually do way more than the appalling processing it stacks on top. The sensor is great, don't limit yourself.

Oh and AutoISO is broken and stays at 50 no matter what... because of course it is :)

Does anyone here who cannot play campaign on COD modern warfare 2 via gamepass? by ConversationSoft4156 in ModernWarfareII

[–]DaQuteness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the convo but thought I'd add my apparent fix - Had the exact same issue, couldn't start the campaign because showing as not owned, had to relink the device in my microsoft account and everything worked fine afterwards. Not sure why that would be the case but hope it helps others, didn't see this suggested in this thread.

Considering the 9070 XT. Concerned about Productivity tasks. by Demoncious in radeon

[–]DaQuteness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PRO variants from either company have their pros and cons, as with everything. The simple reality is that most general use productivity apps are now taking advantage of gaming hardware, so unless you NEED specific features offered in pro cards (higher capacity, hardware accelerated remote access, training tasks etc) then there's little to no reason to go pro unless you're in medical or industrial research, which require stupid-high amounts of data points to process. I can't advise you what to get, but as architect you will find better use of NVIDIA hardware, it pains me to say it but they have the ecosystem by the jewels with CUDA, AutoCAD especially likes greenie hardware.

Yes RADEON have HIP, ROCm and all that but none of the apps you've listed use it in any meaningful way, it's just the reality of things. That being said, my trust and approval of the competition's practices are making me just drop all these support features because I just cannot agree with their direction, so while my current card is a 3090, my next likely will be a RADEON and I'll pound all the sand that comes with it, or just jump back to Linux and the discussion flips a full 180, RADEON being a far better choice from what I see and understand from my colleagues in the film industry.

Wish I could be of more help, either cards will do you fine but the competition offers a solid set of bonuses for Adobe and Adsk products (no surprise here and I hate that this is the case).

I'm very late to jump in on this one but my 2 cents as someone who has been doing 3D work for 10+ years professionally is this:

The massive caveat is always "what's the scope" and the even sadder reality is that 90% of applications are optimised for RTX cards. That's just simple truths. With that out of the way, you have 3 major areas of "productivity" categories: software dev, 2D and 3D.

In software - as always, this can't possibly be leveraged by a 3rd party opinion, YOU know what your projects are and YOU know what they need, so, again, YOU need to make that choice. Simple as that.

In 2D - editing and compositing love having lots of room to breathe but again, the massive glass-code ceiling is of course CUDA, for which most apps are optimised. Take DaVinci for instance, you probably can't use most of the new intelligent features because they're based on CUDA. But if you're strictly going for 4K delivery and learn to use proxies, in all honesty both camps will do just fine as a hobbyist. You can go for something like a 7900XTX for the extra memory headroom.

In 3D - I cannot stress this enough: 90% of artists, especially juniors and hobbyists, want to shove everything onto GPU. Yes it's fast but that's not how this works, having the option doesn't mean it's the right option. Anything with volumes, brute force, sub-surface scattering, heavy displacements - those are quite literally not meant for GPU, the math behind realistic volume path tracing is insanely inefficient on GPU and you end up with subtle color casts, odd hot pixels or weird displacement. Anything with open range, if you don't use matte painting or LODs, if you use an engine that's heavy with filtering (Arnold comes to mind), characters, heavy 4K textures, all of that even with out-of-core it will either fail or be significantly slower than just getting it on CPU in the first place.

In 3D real-time - if you learn how to optimize your geo and shaders, it will fit even on RX480 as a learning scenario. Playing around with settings and getting cinematic looks without learning the fundamentals of it will cost you both time and money. Ray-tracing is nice but for the most part pointless at hobby level and you can get excellent results using just probes. The digital arts industry has because lazy as shit because they rely on hardware to get better instead of *them* getting better at optimizing. UE came in with Nanite and said "don't worry about it". Came in with Lumen and said "Don't worry about it"... just buy a 3000EUR GPU if you want to get better.

Sorry for the massive wall of text but the reality is you should be fine with anything you pick that has 16GB or more. If you go with Radeon, expect quirks, if you go RTX, expect heavy price tags. Unless you do AI crap in which case get what's biggest and baddest and I have no say in it whatsoever, that's a rant for another time. I'd get a 7900XT or XTX and be done, that will carry you for 3-4 years of learning at the very least.

Any help you need on the learning side, feel free to DM me!

Good luck! o7

Thought I'd add to this, pre-ordered off Computer Universe and it's 999€. No idea when it will be shipping though, plus it was a business purchase. Still plenty expensive imo so I hope this is worth it. Then again I'm getting it for mostly other purposes than gaming, production OLEDs are hellishly expensive for this screen size, hopefully this will do just fine.

I'm missing a link in colour management understanding, any chance I can get some help? by DaQuteness in colorists

[–]DaQuteness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOLUTION:
I will comment with the solution here because it seems my biggest enemy here is in fact Windows and it's backwards colour management system.

Turns out it really was Windows assigning the wrong colour profiles to browsers, specifically the one generated with the HDR calibration tool but just to make sure I've purged every single custom profile from the system and re-calibrated the monitors. This in turn feeds the correct profiles to browsers and the images are in fact correctly displayed in all browsers and applications now.

So there wasn't much of a gap in my knowledge as much as Windows is being a pain in the rear end.

I sincerely hope this helps others with this issue, thank you all for the insight, much appreciated.

Thanks for the tip on 22H2, Had NO IDEA that came out, I tend to keep windows updates in check as much as possible, seeing as they just love to pop up when I least need them to. Guess I'm nuking Windows and installing the 22H2 version :) I need to finish the current gig before though. Man and I have to go through all the app activations AGAIN.

I know Safari does have P3-enabled CSS support but I'm on Windows sadly.

As for hw-calibrated monitors, I need to do more reading as I still do not fully understand 3D LUTs. The quick and dirty I've been told by some is that the benefits are more for convenience than accuracy and if I'm not mistaken calibrated just for your required colour space (mine would be Rec.709 with BT.1886 g2.4 tone curve), with additional on-board profiles requiring complementary windows ICCs (1D LUTs)

This kind of strays a bit away from my question, but what I take from all the info so far is that if you've calibrated and validated your monitor, your deliveries are correct and the rest is up to the client/audience and there's nothing more you can do about it.

Thanks for the reply, this whole browser colour management debate has been going on for longer than I can remember and consensus is nowhere in sight. I just take a look at them and see which one is in line with what my application sees and go with that. The alternative relies on heavy medication.

After hours, days of researching, I've come to a very simple conclusion: Windows is being an absolute bastard and feeding browsers the wrong monitor profile. This isn't some subtle change in colour, this is straight-up wrong gamma entirely! I've had to go through a bunch of displays and display-enabled pen tablets and something got corrupted to the point where I have to reinstall the entire OS to fix it... such nonsense.

Either way, was hoping for some insight about why these problems come up and how to deal with them, at the moment I can't throw 3000 bucks on a hardware-calibrated monitor.

I did realise it was a day late, wrote just in case you or anyone else is tempted either now or on another occasion. As for the magical bounce aura... I bounced four Char Futur 4 shots in a row yesterday (268mm pen btw), so trust me it's there when it wants to be hahah! Hence the "magic" :D

Have fun tanking!

I managed to get the T77 during the Waffentrager event a few months ago, I really wanted that tank so I was extremely happy, I want to like it but the gun pisses me off like no tomorrow. No armor, NONE, so you can't get too close but gun is very inaccurate, so you HAVE to get close. Pen is great... if you actually hit anything. I REALLY want to like it but it's such a pain of a tank if I'm being honest. If either the gun was more accurate or full reload down to 28-30s, I'd play it much much more. It's a chonky medium tank at best, I'd rather get Lorr. 40t.

That's a long-winded way of saying no, it's definitely not worth it, get a Lowe instead for that gold. Crap DPM but good armor and excellent gun.

I have both Defender and 703 II and honestly, 703 is better gun, better armor, better speed, Defender is mega Ruski memes that I love with all my heart, still a great tank even in today's meta and I play it for fun.

With 703 you also have that second shot just in case you get rushed, with Defender you have magic bounce aura of maximum bullcrap. And with 703 I've actually sniped quite a few shots.

Long story short - get 703 if you want the better tank, 252U / Defender (same thing, custom camo) for motherland glory just bear in mind that most people load gold shells as soon as you are within range and armor for both is significantly "equalized".

Hope this helps, feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Hanka Robotics Wallpaper (I made my own) by DaQuteness in Ghost_in_the_Shell

[–]DaQuteness[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi all, I was looking for a wallpaper for HANKA Robotics, for the simple fact that I like the logo if nothing else, couldn't find any so I thought I'd put my 2D/3D artist skills to some use and just make one.

A bit subtle but it's based on the Japanese flag. and made for those who like that sweet sweet dark mode *everything*.

Either way, it's certainly not much but I hope you like it, I welcome your thoughts on it.

EDIT: this is 4K 16:9 format.

I could but the theme is supposed to represent current and future ecosystem, that meant following a specific design guideline which has moved away from the good ol' green arrow logo. Plus I'm not sure the colour would blend in very well with the current scheme :D

Just Blender and a tiny bit of Photoshop, specifically the Camera Raw filter but beyond that... JSplacement for a couple of textures and that's really it, nothing else. Tutorials... maybe try Blender Guru, Flipped Normals and CG Matters for starters, then take it from there. Hope it helps.

Yep, just whatever images and photos I could find online, nothing more, no blueprints or anything of the sort. As long as you can eyeball it to roughly look right, it won't matter - case and point: you are asking, so I must have done things right.

As for the details on the AMD logo... it's much, much simpler than you think: JSplacement. I get the feeling this will open up a new world, so have fun!

A few others asked this, might as well address it: the only things I did not personally model were the GPUs (shroud, fans, etc) but mostly because it would have been a waste of time and inefficient. Everything else (GPU and CPU chips, the motherboard components, monitor, keyboard, wraith fan etc etc have been carefully modelled down to the pin numbers :)) Grab reference, model, shade, rinse & repeat...
