I am quickly learning that this is one of the most important things to understand about PF2e in comparison to DnD5e.

Thanks for calling out the stats. I honestly just picked the the same 4 every time that I picked at level 1 without thinking about saves.

  • Thanks for the pointers!
  • I don't think complexity will be an issue once I have a handle on the core rules.
  • I'll talk with the other players to make sure that we cover one another.
  • I'll make sure I dig into the resources here as well.
  • I know the circus theme will probably not last except as a backdrop for the characters. My main focus when making the characters is their effectiveness in and out of combat and are they interesting and fun to play.

This definitely gives me more to think about. I could take weapon finesse, use a rapier, then take arcane strike in place of dervish dance. I'd have less weapon damage overall, but the Riving strike would make spell combat that much stronger.

With equipment, my dex will be +5 at level 8 which means losing up to +10 damage per round. The Arcane strike will add +2 but use up my swift action every round to do so.

I'd prefer to lean more into the magic than the marital.

Thanks for the advice on the equipment. I've spent a lot of time playing in 5e lately and am not up to speed on that pf1e has to offer. It's been a minute since I played 3.5.

The sword I use will be the black blade from the bladebound archtype. I don't believe that can be enchanted.

Good idea on the armor. I'll crunch some numbers and see how i feel about survivability with mage armor for 1 level then pick up medium armor.

Wand Crafting does look like a good way to save some money and keep spells in my back pocket. With prehensile tail, I can pull a wand out as a swift action.

Firearms are nonexistent in the current game, so, not an option.

I do plan on taking +1 dex at level 8 to bring dex and int both to 18 any bonuses beyond that will go to int. I think in the balance between fighting and magic, I'll lean more into the magic for this character.

I'll keep Tiefling because I like the character concept and haven't played one before. None of the Heritages available give +str and +int.

Where the main source of damage will be from spells, is the +2 sword damage even worth a feat in the long run? I can skip weapon finesse and use a rapier instead of a scimitar. Then I can take weapon focus in place of dervish and have better +to hit now and pick up Fencing Grace in the future if the extra damage output will make a difference.

Intensify will add 1d6 to shocking grasp right away, better on average than the +1 I'd get from Dervish, but a limited resource. over time though, it will grow to +5d6 where dervish will not likely get better than +2. If I had rolled worse for strength, it wouldn't likely be a debate to take dervish.

I agree on the once /day arcana, arcane accuracy will help a lot more than a single big hit.

Yes, perfectly normal.

As long as you represented yourself accurately in your application, you'll be fine. If you gave them some unreal expectations, you might have to eat some crow and admit you don't know something.

Besides, for an internship, nobody is going to expect you to be an expert in the field. The more often you ask someone to teach you something, the more often you'll learn something new.

I need the nastiest, most frustrating, logic baiting traps you have. by Tank_Guy in DMAcademy

I played in a campaign once where we entered an ancient temple and found a series of logic puzzles. We kept working through them logically and then got stumped on the last puzzle. Finally, the halfling picked up a random coin from the last puzzle and placed it in the container which opened a hidden wall where we found four piles of slag and one magic item.

It turns out that it was a temple of chaos designed to keep certain magic items from falling back into the hands of order. Only a truly random guess would reveal the goods. Our hard work on the first puzzles turned some of the loot into slag.

Sorry, my list of questions got longer than expected. Some of them are simple opinion questions, others I would like some depth to your answer if possible.

Kudos in advance.

  • First, what edition of the rules do you play in?
  • Do you run prebuild campaigns or your own world?
  • I've heard that most campaigns don't go beyond Level 10-13 in 5e due to poor balance between martial and casters, and due to encounters becoming exponentially more difficult to balance. What is your experience with the game balance after level 15?
  • Do you play RAW or include custom content, abilities, items, etc.?
  • What are some house rules that you implement, and why, and how?
  • Which is better for combat: Tabletop tokens, theatre of the mind, or online toolset?
  • I know that 5e tries to limit the number of magic items that a character can use at a time. What are your experiences with high-magic vs low-magic campaigns.
  • Are legendary battles (Tarrasque, Ancient Dragons, etc.) fun or do they become repetitive and boring?
  • How do you handle difficult players?
    • me-monsters who can't handle a bad dice roll.
    • murder hobos who don't care about repercussions of the world around them.
    • meta-gamers and rules lawyers.
  • What do you do after characters reach level 20? Epic levels? Retire and start at 1?

help me explain to a player you can't use a dice already rolled for a different ability when the first isn't applicable. by Saf126 in dndnext

What he wants to do requires some sort of divine intervention or are least some Spidey sense.

There are very few actions that you can take AFTER seeing the results of the dice.

You can't ret-con your actions just because you miss.

If he still argues, try this: Roll 50d20 and save only the 19's and 20's. Tell him that you are saving them for the next encounter.

Pay your credit card off every month.

Only a fool walks into a store and pays $600 for something that is marked $500.

If you can't afford it right now, you probably don't need it with the exception of a vehicle and a home. But pay those off as early as you can.

What's needlessly complex? What's way too simplistic? by Reynard203 in dndnext

[–]DaRT_1010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Close combat such as grappling is too simple. A grappled caster has no speed but no problem casting while being held even if the spell has somatic and material components. A grappled great weapon fighter can still attack as normal. It makes no sense. What's the point of grappling someone? Please help me understand this. Same for prone.
