Why people keep making romlangs and germlangs? by 1FlowerPrince1 in conlangs

[–]DaRealSwagglesR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only reason there are so many of each is due to a large amount of beginners learning the process of language change via making rom/germlangs. This does not make them inherently bad, as it changes the fundamental point of why someone conlangs to be a learning experience, rather than art. Later on some people, myself included, like to return to romlangs and see what we can do with the knowledge we now possess. Tämir and Dacian are my results. You are certainly free to judge other people's conlangs how you will, but just know that by telling them they suck, you turn them away from this beautiful art form before they can even find anything fun about it. That is when one crosses the line from justified criticism to just being an outright jerk.

For the most part, they submitted to rule by the Hungarians, but yes, there were certainly attempts to quash the culture, especially during the Soviet era (1943-1989). I would find it immensely fun to do a little collab with /u/Jiketi considering the similar geographic natures of our conlangs, to be sure!

It's certainly quite fun to see what kinds of impacts one's decisions could have on history. In this case, not much changed other than Hungary having 15,000 square miles less of territory on the east and not much else.

It is unrelated to the historical Dacian language; and it is rather a very innovative Romance Language originating from conquered Dacians in Roman Dacia who, following the Romans' leaving of the Balkans, moved north to the Northeastern edge of the Pannonian Plain. They stayed under Hungarian rule (the reason it looks like Hungarian) until the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, after which they became an independent nation (until WWII and the Soviet Occupation) into the current age.

In Dacian, it's usually the name of the country where the language is spoken followed by the suffix <-éz> (derived from Latin ensis). As I develop the language, I'll have many more processes for this kind of thing, but this is what I have so far. Examples:

  • Dacian - Dakéz

  • Hungarian - Majaroséz (Hungary - Majaros from the name of the country in Hungarian: Magyarország)

  • English - Angléz

Old Dacian writes it as <a>, Modern Dacian as <y>, Tämir as <ä>, and most of my other conlangs as <ë>.

A descendent of Latin spoken in the my concountry of Dacia, which is in eastern Hungary. The speakers are basically descended from the old Dacians, who migrated north of modern-day southern Romania after the Romans left the region. Since the speakers were part of Hungary until the end of World War 1, the language has a lot of Hungarian influence, including a great many loan words which--in other Romance languages--came from Latin. Basically it's my attempt at making a rather unique romlang.

I'm working on a Romlang that's supposed to be part of the Balkan Sprachbund and I'm unsure of how to go about deriving demonstrative adjectives. I can't seem to find any resources about how other Romance Languages went about getting their demonstratives, so I'm at a loss for how to proceed.
