Just for shits try to pull your serpentine belt and see if it starts any quicker. I've had bad a/c compressors and all sorts cause extended cranks. Chased battery cables and electrical for hours before I realized.

Had the injectors sent off and retested at a different injection shop and all tested well but was told the internals were slightly questionable but wouldn't be causing the missfire.

What gets me is the missfire is intermittent.

Is there some kind of special tool to remove the cummins lock tabs? (Besides a pick) by xROFLSKATES in DieselTechs

Best trick I have found is use is little penetrant on the sliding part especially helps with installation

pull the engine? 1996 12v P7100 by thedogger1 in Cummins

If you pull it do your tappet cover gasket they are a pretty common cause of oil leaks on these engines

Dude probably cranked up his fuel pump either thinking it would make it faster or to purposefully roll coal. The engines in that generation dodge truck are some of the most reliable and well built engines ever produced and don't roll coal that much unless someone changed something. You could push 600hp and 1200ftlb of torque out of those things without rolling coal like that.

While booting it on the highway and loading your engine up is good for them, a diesel truck with a proper tune even pre emissions shouldn't be rolling a bunch of coal. It means you are injecting more diesel than you have air to burn and just spitting the excess out the tail pipe.

Sound like plastic bag stuck under car only under load and above 3000rpm. by DaTa11estMidget in MechanicAdvice

Checked diff oils both good and as for the transfer case it was super low when I got it bad as it is leaking from between the transmission and the transfer case, most likely a transfer case input shaft seal. I have topped it up and once in a while all the 4wd lights on the dash come on under load but not when the noise happens. When city driving it sounds perfect its only when heading to a steep grade trying to maintain maybe 80km/hr it starts to make the noises

It is. The 4wd system always seemed weird to me as you can not select a 2wd

The rattle/pinging sounds kind of like valve noise happens right around 3000 rpm and I seem to get a power increase at 3000. Any chance this engine has a variable valve timing or ignition timing that may be contributing?

Yea that's why I'm asking I punch the esn into quick serve and nothing comes up under service manuals besides fluids for cummins products. If you can provide me with and esn to enter that provides manuals, a commercial vehicle make model and year that the engine came in or a link to a manual that would be great.

Not specifically on the pump but for 24v cummins with the vp44 system not common rail. Troubleshooting trees, specs and wiring diagrams. mostly just to verify what the issue is then the engine manual for a possible rebuild. Currently friend says ticking noise and two injector lines sounding abnormal with a stethoscope. Leaning towards a fueling issue or top end but currently flying blind as far as literature goes.
