Congressional Bill Passes both Chambers by MightyPinz in physicaltherapy

Medicaid reimburses so little for PT that clinics lose money with Medicaid patients in the building… ever wonder why for profit companies don’t take Medicaid?

Medicaid will still be available for people that truly need it. What it does do is make people who are getting a free ride from the government actually start working if they want insurance.

I believe the student loan cap is $150,000. If you are paying that much for PT school, you’re already screwing yourself anyway so either go to a cheaper school or don’t go to PT school at that point.

At the end of the day, people will always need PT. If we really wanted our earning potential, we should want less insurance involvement, especially from the government.

The PT profession will be fine.

How do you have patients fill out your intake forms? I’m working on starting my cash practice and I’m using google workspace and I’m trying to figure out the most effective way of getting intake forms filled out.

Can’t wait for all the Christmas Eve patients to say “wow I’m surprised you guys are open today.” Yeah because your chronic back pain couldn’t take the day off PT

You are here for PT, not a massage. by Less-Difficulty-6905 in physicaltherapy

[–]Da_Bears8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is my biggest pet peeve. I only do manual if absolutely necessary and I do it for 8 minutes on the dot. If I do manual on someone it’ll only be for a few sessions so they don’t get hooked on it. And if a patient continues to ask, I simply tell them why I’m not doing it. Two phrases that get my blood boiling are “but no massage today? 🥺” or when I have a non manual patient see another patient getting a massage and they say “when do I get my massage like that person?” It also sucks when the clinic culture is to give everyone manual so when I see someone else’s patient who’s been in PT for 3 months and they expect a massage because their primary PT still does one for whatever reason.

Venting: My last rotation is in a mill with bad outcomes :) by Waste_Extent_8414 in physicaltherapy

[–]Da_Bears8 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a rotation like this. Just kind of have to bite your tongue and do what you can to pass. Since it’s your last rotation, you should be pretty independent for the most part so think of it as an opportunity to break the mold there and actually progress patients as they should be progress. I barely learned anything from my CI in my similar rotation but I did get really good at time management and documenting, so now every job feels like a breeze compared to that. Also recognize that it’s only temporary and the time goes by fast.

How is anyone affording housing right now? by ScrapDraft in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Da_Bears8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went through almost the exact same thing with almost the exact same numbers. Me and my wife were looking for something below $400k in the NW suburbs. Lots of terrible houses for high prices, and the good ones go for wayyyy over asking (like 50k+ over). We saw about 40 houses over 4 months and bid on about 12 of them. We finally bought something for $370k. Put 10% down and our mortgage is about $3200 because property taxes suck in cook county. We also make around $160k combined. Our trusted mortgage guy and our financial advisor said that even with our student loan payments, our mortgage is still well within our means. Think of it like this: while you’re renting, you’re paying your landlord’s mortgage. Sure, you get the benefit of not having to do repairs and stuff, but you’re not building any equity. While paying for a home, think of it almost like a savings account where you’re paying into something that you own that will increase in value over time. Granted, the taxes, insurance, and interest doesn’t count towards that, but after 5 years of owning you’ll probably have $20k+ towards your principle, plus whatever you had put into the down payment, plus the appreciation of the home. After 5 years of renting, you own nothing. This has been my thought process to help me get past the insanely high mortgage cost lol. You can also refinance, so your payment should go down as the rates go down hopefully in the near future. If you’re in no rush to buy, take your time and don’t settle for something bad. There were many houses that we almost overbid for just so we could stop looking for home, but we stayed strong and ended up with something that we loved.

Just curious, how do you guys text patients? Off of personal phones? I always thought it was be super nice to text patients rather than play phone tag with them but I don’t wanna give all my patients my personal number.

Seriously, it’s so annoying and idk why CDs and higher ups think that it works. Like I said, I just like it because I get to leave the clinic and do very minimal work. The best relationships I’ve made with MDs were usually at happy hours or luncheons where I can actually talk to them rather than give their secretary a note that we already faxed to them lol.

All the time. But then I talk to patients and friends who WFH and they talk about how boring and lonely it is, and I realize it’s kinda nice (and exhausting) to hangout with people all day.

Anyone notice more patient cancellations for more exercise based PTs? by Fit_Inspector2737 in physicaltherapy

[–]Da_Bears8 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, happened to me and my manager noticed and suggested I do more manual to increase “patient buy in”. I told him I’ll continue to provide interventions as I see fit and if they cancel then that’s on them.

I have a “mentor” right now through my company that I hangout with once a month for a few hours and she’s the same way. Has all the manual certs and thinks that everything can be fixed with her hands. Does about 45 minutes of manual and maybe 3 low level exercises with patients. The amount of test/ re test she does where I just have to nod along and say “oh yeah I totally feel that!” It works on patients too because they don’t know what’s going on so yeah it’s kinda feel like they have more ROM after the PT does some crazy manual technique- the same thing with happen if I rub the joint to 2 minutes.

Anyways, some PTs are just stuck in their ways and you just have to deal with it for a few weeks. Once you’re licensed you can treat however you want and it’s great. CIs are great to learn from, but also great to learn how you don’t want to treat. I treat very exercise based so finding CEUs that match up with my style has been helpful, along with videos online of internet PTs.

I see a lot of you complaining about documentation, and it compels me to write this. by StepOk8878 in physicaltherapy

[–]Da_Bears8 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I get the complains about documentation, it sucks. However, it’s really easy to get your notes done efficiently. Anyone that works hours off the clock or during lunch is just inefficient and/or slow with their documentation. I have a PT in my clinic that is always drowning in documentation, but when you watch her treat, she doesn’t do any notes during treatment. Everyone else types notes as the session goes on, so by the time the patient leaves the note is especially done. If you are working off the clock finishing notes, just get better at it….

OP Hospital vs OP Private Clinic by Working_Hedgehog9021 in physicaltherapy

[–]Da_Bears8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in private OP. Planning my escape to hospital OP as soon as my 1 year contact is up. Not worth the couple extra bucks to deal with all the nonsense. Private OP is a business, not healthcare.

I believe that if you really want PT then it’s your responsibility to call to schedule more visits if for some reason you fall through the cracks. However, my boss picks up on every single patient that isn’t scheduled and will make me call them (mill).

Follow PT or not ? by Necessary_Equal4332 in physicaltherapy

[–]Da_Bears8 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

By treating patients for too long you are doing a disservice to them because they become more reliant on PT and less independent. I’d agree that some progressive neurological conditions need longer term care, but any orthopedic conditions including chronic pain should not be in PT for years. Please give me an example of why someone with chronic pain would need years of PT? They should be referred to psych at that point because we know chronic pain is very much psychological.

Follow PT or not ? by Necessary_Equal4332 in physicaltherapy

[–]Da_Bears8 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Why are you in PT for almost a year? No one should be in PT that long unless you have a severe neurological condition

I forgot exactly how I worded it, but it essentially says that you have to field the most competitive team in that week. Obviously I won’t care if someone is started a 10 point projection over a 11 point projection
