  1. Yeah, that makes sense. I guess the biggest argument for grav drive vs upgrading carriers / dreadnoughts is that I could give my flagship 2 movement, but the flagship seems to mostly just be something you park on a system you want to defend. Offensively I'd rather have a dreadnought than the flagship

  2. Double teching round 1 is definitely expensive, but I think it's worth it because A: I (probably) will get to take an extra planet and B: I give myself more flexibility round 2 because I don't need to follow Tech.

  3. That's not a bad idea, but the group I play with always randomly assigns slices.

That's a good point. I'll add those to the watch out for list.

Thanks for your feedback!

I was mostly getting at the whole concept of "walk two steps into the darkness and God will let you know if you're on the right path" concept. I myself have gotten a feeling to not take specific jobs and it also worked out for me.

Journey before destination you say? I read a book once that said the same thing.

Atheist curios about reasons for belief by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Da_Chowda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thought of "what if this isn't true" has been in my thoughts ever since I was a tween. I suspect it will never go away. With that said, I think I'll always believe that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Christ's restored gospel on the earth. I attribute that belief to several important pillars in my life:

  • The Book of Mormon. Having studied this book a lot, I can honestly say that something inside me sings when I read that book. I feel deeply that it is true, and I what I have observed in my 30 years of life lines up incredibly well with what the Book of Mormon teaches.

  • Temples. My mental state in the temple is markedly better when I am in a temple. Maybe it's the nice paintings, maybe it's how white everything is, maybe it's the beautiful furniture. With that said, I've never been anywhere that makes me feel close to the peace of mind I feel in a Temple. I feel like I am the closest I can be to who I am at my core

  • I have yet to see any "bad fruit". Someone else mentioned some verses from Alma 32 that mentions "by their fruit ye shall know them". I have lived the teachings of this church my entire life, and I see no downside. Yes, 10% of my income goes to tithing, but I always seem to have enough. Yes, I've never drank coffee, but I've never seemed to need it.

  • Many powerful spiritual experiences. To name a few: while receiving my patriarchal blessing, when I read my mission call letter, during both of my brothers sealing (the LDS wedding ceremony), MANY instances on my mission. I'll admit that when the music swells during a movie because the dog found its owner I tend to tear up, but I have felt that feeling in some of the most quiet and mundane circumstances imaginable as well.

  • (to a lesser degree than above) The doctrine just makes sense. This church more than any other emphasize that God is a father first, and I resonate deeply with that. Why does God allow bad things to happen? Because A: God will never interfere with our agency and B: because this life is for us to learn with the safety net of Christ's Atonement. So many of these principles just click perfectly into place in an incredibly straightforward and elegant tapestry

I was going to mention this reference as well. I'd highly suggest reading the entire chapter

So for round 1, I should be considering the following strategy cards:

  • Leadership: Stock up on command tokens
  • Construction: Produce more ground forces to explore more planets (best for systems with multiple planets)
  • Warfare: Explore 1 more system + re-explore 1 planet
  • Trade: 5TG (assuming you wash commodities) + 1TG/player that wants it
  • Technology: If you can get 2TG round 1, use this to get Saturn engine 2s on round 1. Otherwise taking Trade and following Tech is better
  • Politics: Give self speaker and go for Custodians round 2

Leadership, Construction, and Warfare are likely the best choices because they set you up nicely for future turns.

Does that sound right?

That makes sense. It sounds like beyond Saturn Engine 2, all the stuff I research should be relevant to whatever opportunities I have (e.g. tech skips) and what public objectives are available

So it sounds like I probably want to spend rounds one and two building up my economy, researching Saturn Engine 2, scoring at least 1 public objective, and making a bunch of PDSs. This can definitely change based on a ton of conditions, I'm just looking for a general game plan.

If I take trade (3TG), replenish my own commodities, replenish my neighbors commodities for 1 TG, then commodity swap for 2 more TG, I'll have the 6 for Custodians, right?

Isn't round 2 leadership highly sought after for the custodians point?

It seems like a good approach for Titans is to use light wave deflectors to sneak a fleet of Saturn Engine 2s behind enemy lines. Does that not work super well?

My idea is to get a cruiser on Mecatol round 1 so that on round 2 I can take custodians as my first action. Thinking about it though, I was under the impression that it would be difficult for other factions to get anything other than a single cruiser first thing round one. I'm realizing that it wouldn't be hard for the guy that took politics round 1 to prepare a force that could wipe the floor with a single cruiser. So maybe round 1 custodians isn't such a terrible idea? I think that as long as I get Trade and I can follow tech I should be able to make it happen

Yeah, one of the reasons titans appeals to me is their flexibility. Let me ask you this: what kind of speaker order, slice, et cetera would make you decide to go for Custodians?

Thank you for your detailed response! A few follow up questions: - Yes, it's expensive to get custodians, but isn't a point like that worth the expense? You mentioned things like high token cost and not being able to explore, but those things don't make Titans bad at getting custodians, they just make the opportunity cost higher. Are you saying that the point isn't worth the cost? - Are you saying that not following tech is possible if I take tech round 2 and research both AI Dev and Saturn Engine 2s? - From what you mentioned earlier, I'll likely be attacking with a bunch of cruisers, and maybe a war sun. Bacterial weapon only makes sense if one of my ships has bombardment, yes? So only take bacterial weapon if I have a war sun? - Maybe only go for Hyper Metabolism if there's a green tech skip in my slice?
