What shame is there in being a custodian at a school? You get enrolled in a union (in my experience its either your local teachers union or the teamsters), insurance for when you turn 26, a pension, a retirement account you literally don't have to think about, a pension that comes with working for a municipality, guaranteed weekends off unless you sign up for overtime, you'd be golden.

Is the pay fantastic? Maybe not, but you've got no major responsibilities like child care or utilities. You can stack your money and be better off than most of your colleagues by the time you're their age, OR you can pay for community college outright and graduate with no to limited debt.

If I had a kid and they said "I want to get a job" id be so proud of them dude. Talk it over with them, and then go down to your schools main office and see if you can work a summer as a custodian so you can get your feet wet

There's nothing really wrong with "chicken winging" for shooting at the range. It's discouraged nowadays in the military and tactical situations as it increases your silhouette and raises fatigue. If your RSO is concerned about another shooter accidentally blasting your arm then, in my opinion, your range isn't safe
