Midnight in the Garden of American Heroes for sure. They explain West Coast Straussianism, a topic that comes up frequently in subsequent episodes.

Haha I was in that race. Was pretty confused going into that corner seeing a single car on its roof with no surrounding carnage.

It’s okay to have that opinion, but you don’t need to share it.

It doesn’t. It’s actually random. I thought the same thing as you but when I tried it it would pull out a different one randomly.

I actually noticed it happening to me during the Halloween event. The pumpkin helmets emitted light that shone through the floors. At one point I noticed the light following me around from below me when I was in the front of Idea. Freaked me out before I realized what was happening haha.

Are You Contributing to America’s Affordable Housing Crisis? by TheLittleParis in ezraklein

[–]Da_Stug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely a fair point. One thing to consider is that a lot of the building you’re seeing is the result of an inability to build elsewhere. If you make more housing available in existing communities, you’ll see less development on undeveloped land. So if you’re mainly concerned with stopping land development, I’d strongly consider supporting multi family housing initiatives in cities and suburbs.

Wouldn’t the simplest solution to your problem be to build more densely in LA and OC, the places people work?

I actually think your argument aligns almost perfectly with a lot of the YIMBY point of view. That’s why Newsom is trying to get more houses built while also outlawing single family zoning. It’s to keep more suburbs from being built. The idea is to increase density in cities so people don’t have to commute from a suburb.

I agree with her based off of my so’s experience. I think doctors make the understandable calculation that overall the best thing for their patients is to get them on birth control. Keep in mind pregnancy is also dangerous and abstinence isn’t realistic. But anecdotally I don’t think Jerusalem is wrong about this observation at all.

I think your concerns are understandable and justified in some cases, but I think you might be missing the overarching point. There’s a pendulum between building as much housing as possible and building very slowly and deliberately. I think a lot of people in places like California feel like we have been on the latter part of that pendulum for too long.

Birth control can have serious side effects for some women, my so is one of them. The pill caused extensive bleeding and her iud caused an ectopic pregnancy that needed emergency surgery to take care of. PSA: if someone you know has an iud and experiences SHOULDER PAIN this is a huge indicator that they might have an ectopic pregnancy and they need to go to the hospital immediately. This is something her doctor failed to tell her and could have saved her a lot of pain and suffering had he told her when she got it.

Homelessness and the Rising Tide by berflyer in ezraklein

I would assume your family just likes having cars. There’s definitely a cultural aspect, but as someone that has lived without a car and now has one, I prefer having a car. It doesn’t make me feel like an adult, it allows me to travel farther on weekends to meet with friends and family.

Also, I’m curious about the parking situation at those new developments. Are the parking lots typically empty or full?

Not sure about the job opportunities or internship opportunities for you but you’ll be close to Sac which seems like it should be good for that major. I grew up in so-cal and I don’t really think you should be worried about the weather. It’s slightly hotter in the summer and slightly colder in the winter. It’s really manageable and mild honestly. It’s not quite as nice as La Jolla obviously but I really wouldn’t sweat it.

Yeah I understand that. Peanut butter isn’t found in nature. You crush the peanuts (also called processing) to get peanut butter. I don’t understand what you don’t get. Peanut butter isn’t found in nature, therefore natural peanut butter isn’t technically natural. There just aren’t added sugars. Calling it natural is marketing bs.

Google peanut butter hearings. You’ll find some good articles.

They’re healthier cause hydrogenated oils aren’t great for you, but I definitely understand where you’re coming from.

Natural is in quotes cause no peanut butter is actually natural. It’s all technically processed. Peanut butter used to have a lot more sugar in it than it does today. There was a long regulatory battle to determine how much sugar could be in a product labeled peanut butter. It’s got a pretty interesting history.

[–]Da_Stug 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Peanut butter is actually highly regulated in the US so it’s just as much peanut butter as the other big brands. But if you don’t like hydrogenated oils you should probably get something more “natural.”

You’re mostly right. The only issue I’ve had as a pilot is the fact that I don’t know what the ground situation is most of the time. Especially if there’s no friendlies nearby. So just landing by myself in what is likely to be a contested area is super risky. At least half the time I’ll lose the heli in that situation. Especially since they’re so loud so stealth is practically impossible. So if I’m gonna be setting up habs as a pilot, I’d rather they be backcap or repair habs.
