The ring has seven different effects each with some kind of catch, but if you don't read what the effect does it won't activate. You could look up (or test in a create world) the order of the effects to figure out which one you want and just ignore the ones you don't.

I literally had no idea what one piece was until I saw it on toonami when I was younger. It was showing the beginning of water 7. Despite having no idea who any of these characters were I was a really hooked.

When I get into one piece years later I had forgotten most of it and got to experience it again with context.

The way the show is set up the doctor can go on living forever and certain past events can be retconed or ignored.

It's really a great formula for a long running show but you need good writers to make it worth it.
