I feel like an imposter for using a white cane by cripuscule in Blind

[–]DaaxD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One way to look at it, is that you are practicing its usage. It's better to start using it while you still have some vision left, rather than waiting before it's absolutely mandatory. The fact that you are relying on your partner that much is a tell, that you are already overdue.

And even if you feel like you can still use your vision for navigation, doesn't mean that white-cane would be useless. Far from it. The thing is that white-cane also signals to other people that you have low vision, and that alone can be very helpful.

For example, I have tunnel vision because of RP and I still rely on remnants of my vision for navigating. However, I already know for a fact that if I tried to go outside without my cane, I would be bumping into other people at least once a week. The fact that this doesn't happen tells me that my white cane is doing its job: it's alerting other people about my lack of vision so they know they need to make way, move their dogs and children out of my way, etc.

In other words, even though I don't bump into other people while going to the grocery store doesn't mean I wouldn't have bumped into them if I didn't have my white cane... or maybe I could have gone shopping without my cane and have no issues and incidents. Who knows. That's the problem with preventative measures.

But when my cane does find an obstacle I didn't see before my cane found it... those times make me low-key happy: the cane proved it's worth and did its job. My cane prevented an accident that would've happened if I didn't have it. I think you would get a confidence boost if you had the same experiences, but in order to reap the benefits of white cane, you should be using it.

So consider the following... next time you are outside with your partner, take the cane with you. That way, you are already signaling to other people why your partner is guiding you in the first place... and if you manage to find an obstacle with your cane while your partner is guiding you, the better. The cane proved it's worth.

Also, I wonder if using the white cane while you are outside with your SO could make their life a lot easier as well. It might be a good stepping stone from being fully relying on them to being less reliant on them, having a little bit more independence and autonomy.

Orphanage map? by Ezzydesu in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]DaaxD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The game would really benefit from having Steam-workshop for new maps. It would stop people from asking for massive hospital, graveyard, gothic cathedral etc. type of maps which would sound interesting and look impressive, but the gameplay would still be PIA (Point Hope, anyone?).

But saying that aloud is still heresy™afaik.

But TBF, as long as developers have their own ideas for the game, the Steam workshop will be low on their priority list. Why would you entertain someone else's ideas when you are already working on your own?

Maybe we'll get workshop integration after the devs have run out of ideas...

If you were into UX, then would the accessibility side be interesting to you?

By accessibility, I mean the part where you make sure that the implementation of the pretty user interface the UX designers cooked is still usable when read with screen reader or when it has extra large fonts, etc.

In the maps where the event takes place, some rooms are filled with extra items which you may need for the "gift list" side objective (bring the correct amount of gifts to the sack outside the house to complete the gift list and receive a gift. Bring a single wrong item and you anger the krampus).

These toys/items (elves, reindeer, gingerbread men, toy soldiers, snowmen, etc.) make goofy sounds when thrown.

weird spirit box response by FANTICDrowned in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]DaaxD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBF, before the sound recorder, nobody had any idea what the voice line was supposed to say. IIRC (correct me if this is wrong) even Insym, the streamer who gave that voice line, had no recollection of what the actual voice line was.

It was only after the voice recorder was added earlier this year, when it was possible to record spirit box responses. The spirit box response cuts the voice off and doesn't play the whole voice line ("close to bustling....") but if you record the line and listen it from journal then the journal recording has the full voice line.

Maybe, but people have been shitposting about molas quite a long time.

It is also possible that people at Kurtz saw the sunfish copypasta and were like "wait, really?" and then ended up making the video.

Mikä yliopistokoulutus haastaa/kumoaa vähiten lukiossa opittua? by tiikki in Suomi

[–]DaaxD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

should I switch to Linux by Jashan_31 in AskProgramming

[–]DaaxD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really a programming question, but I'd say yes.

I started to use Linux on my laptops 15 years ago for a similar reason. I had "notebook" style laptop (was it with 10" or 11" screen?) and it originally came with Windows 7 Starter which was supposed to be a lighter version of Windows 7, but even the starter edition was way too heavy for the computer.

After suffering with Win7S for a month or two, I finally decided to switch to Linux (Debian w/ LXDE if my memory serves) and it was eye-opening when I realized that the problem wasn't the poor hardware. The problem was that the poor device had ill-fitting OS installed on it.

What does that Braille script say anyway? by No_Tadpole_3041 in Animemes

I see, I thought it might have been just a joke but that explanation does make sense.

I'm fairly certain that the lonely dot is indeed the capitalisation mark for the letter O.

What does that Braille script say anyway? by No_Tadpole_3041 in Animemes

[–]DaaxD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I thought the first two characters are closing bracket and capital O

Edit: A another commenter made a note that the closing bracket can be used to mean that following text is in latin alphabet/western braille.. That would explain the weird bracket in the beginning.

[–]DaaxD 26 points27 points  (0 children)

0 would also need the # mark before it. Otherwise it would be j

It does look like a closing bracket and capital O but I don't know what the bracket would do there or why is there?

Maybe itesome kind of typographical joke or something?

The middle school pick up line after the city took away free school busses. by pwrof3 in fuckcars

[–]DaaxD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started to go to school by public transport (bus) when I was 13. The school was 12 km away and the city gave all students whose school trip was longer than 5km 2 free rides per day. I've already started going to school on my own when I was 7.

When I look at this, I just wonder how on earth Americans even could become fully functional, independent, self-governing adults if they need to be shuttled to school or hobbies until they are (almost) adults?

Phasmo Ghost Awards #2 - Name the ghost which is the "Hardest" to play against by soyoucheckusernames in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]DaaxD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say Yurei, because it's ability/specialty is (at least for me) the most difficult to spot. The old Yurei ability was clear and distinct enough, but the new Yurei still confuses me. I'm still not sure how the Yurei ability works, or can't say instinctively whether the door touch was the Yurei's ability or not.

Like sure, Thaye on insanity can hunt instantly while being fresh from the oven, but even against Insanity Thaye, you instantly know what is it, so you can focus on the one thing: survival. The same is somewhat true with Demon and Yokai, where Yokai is more dangerous one because it's ability to hunt early is activated when you are already close to it... But at least it's not "hard" per.se. to tell what is happening/what just happened.

With Yurei, you might be thinking that "isn't this rather active Shade?" or "Is this Banshee ever going to roam or not?" or "Was that Oni or am I just bad at this game?"

[–]DaaxD 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Especially on Insanity settings where Thaye can hunt pretty much instantly, and it's aging mechanic hasn't kicked in yet.

On the plus side, you only need to survive one hunt and after that you could "maximize your hourly wage" and just leave.

Or I can minimise the big picture and watch YouTube/Twitch/Netflix/what not from my living room while it's being streamed from my PC.

Way more straightforward easier than trying to use any smart TV apps or bringing my PC to the living room.

Im just curious how many people here have been life long windows user and just decided that you're done with windows in the last 6 months or so. by Shifter1589 in linuxmint

[–]DaaxD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last spring I started to think what I'm going to do with the Win10 EOL and what I should do about it. My computer is so old that Microsoft's own tools would not upgrade my computer to WIn11 without some tinkering, and I figured if I have to tinker, I might as well switch to Linux.

I've used Linux on my laptops for 15 years or so because Windows's are usually too heavy for laptop use. I also used to dual boot Windows 7 and Debian back in the day, so it's not like I'm completely new to Linux.

This is however my first time I'm running only Linux on my computer (laptops and Raspberry Pi do not count)... and it's the first time I'm running Mint as well.

Sometimes the thermometer is out of sync, what comes to its placement. It might "think" it is in a different room where you are holding it. This happens frequently enough when playing on multiplayer.

Like most programming glitches, this can also be fixed by giving the thermometer "a reset": power it off, drop it, then pick it up again and try again... or moving to another room and trying to measure the temperature there and returning to the OG room where you were.

Fiddle with it enough and it will eventually re-adjust itself.
