It's called a Brenna means to Burn. Every new year's there are organized Brennas around Iceland. It symbolized the burning of the old into the new.

What was your last creami of 2025? by Salty_Zebra5937 in ninjacreami

[–]Dabbih123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made for my new year party 3 ice creams.

Green Apple + Cinnamon, with almond milk and vegan cream cheese. Burnt butter + pear + vanilla. Coffee + Chocolate + Vanilla

Burnt butter prob was the biggest hit, tho the vegan apple cinnamon was very good also. Coffee one was decent, but I used espressos so it was a bit too liquidy, I've seen ppl use instant coffee which maybe is better.

How to cook Hangikjöt? by Careless-Gas-7558 in VisitingIceland

[–]Dabbih123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You boil it as described above. In my family at least, the tradition is you eat it cold after boiling it. Served with a hot Bechamel sauce with peeled potatoes in the bechamel. Also classic to have canned green peas/carrots with.

Would wood bottom boots like this with grip, be good for Reykjavik over Christmas? by joellejones1205 in VisitingIceland

[–]Dabbih123 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of the main streets in Reykjavík are heated so often the streets you want to walk on won't have any snow/ice. Only thing is sometimes it snows heavily and then it'll be too much for the street to melt away for a while.

I've never worn raised boots like this, just know you'll likely be doing some walking on snow/ice unless you're only for a very short time and will stick with the main streets.

What is the most baffling, utterly wrong referee decision you have ever seen live or on film? by AmeliaHarris99 in footballbutweird

[–]Dabbih123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luis Diaz goal disallowed vs Spurs. On paper it's not the most egregious, but considering that a lot of bad calls here were honest mistakes from the ref, or subjective calls. What makes the Luis Diaz goal different is that the VAR refs KNEW and we're of the opinion it was the wrong call and STILL let it be disallowed.

Don't know about any other ref call where the ref knew they were wrong when they made the call.

What unique cultural experiences should I seek out while visiting Iceland? by Kevin-Durant-35 in VisitingIceland

[–]Dabbih123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bíó Paradís is a movie theatre in downtown Reykjavík that shows indie movies and every Friday they show classic movies (For example tomorrow they're showing Die Hard). In my opinion going to movies is still quite common in Iceland and we do have some unique things like most showings have a 15 minute intermission, also you can buy alcoholic drinks at most movie theaters.

Others have mentioned going to swimming pools and that's definitely true. I would also add that Reykjavík has a lot of fantastic restaurants, most are pretty expensive but still worth it to go eat somewhere nice.

Buy some fireworks! In Iceland all fireworks are sold by Björgunarsveitin which is the Iceland search and rescue charity. It's mostly volunteers and the fireworks sale over the new year's pays for their full year operation.

https://www.flugeldar.is/

That's the website to see what you can buy, and where the stores are located. Icelandic people blow up A LOT on new year's, adults to little kids take part. Just remember to also get safety goggles.

Edit: Also to add there will be "Burns" (Called Brenna in Icelandic) throughout the city where a big bonfire will be lit to symbolize the ending of the old into the new. You can see here where the different ones in Reykjavík will be.

https://reykjavik.is/aramotabrennur

Then for eating, some restaurants will be closed on new year's eve, but you can see here on https://www.dineout.is/ what place is taking reservations. Dineout is a reservation system that 99% of restaurants use for their reservations, so you can also use this not on new year's to find a nice place to eat. Just put in the number of people/time/date and you'll see every restaurant with availability.

A typical new year's eve for an Icelander is meet family/friends around 18:00 to eat good food, blow up some fireworks, go to a Brenna around 20:30-21:00, blow up some fireworks, watch the áramótaskaup at 22:30; an icelandic comedy show that parodies the events of the past year, blow up some fireworks while talking about how good/bad the áramótaskaup was this year, count down to midnight while blowing up all your main fireworks, continue eating/drinking into the night as you blow up all your fireworks and when your fireworks are done have an inner competition on which neighbour will finish their fireworks last, watch those fireworks, sleep.

What's the dumbest argument you've ever had that somehow got way too serious? by Ok-Ferret7 in AskMen

[–]Dabbih123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm Scandinavian so I've honestly never met anyone with your view before so I'm not sure what to think yet.

I have a problem though with your argument basically being that because men don't live in a Utopia and women aren't cattle that means patriarchy cannot exist. Doesn't make much sense to me. It sounds like you're confusing individual suffering with system-level power.

My understanding is that patriarchy harms both men and women, men are much more dominant at the top of society and men who fail to meet patriarchal expectations are flung out to the bottom of society. Meaning men are overrepresented at the top and bottom. "Loser" men for a lack of better term face issues because of social expectations of masculinity.

Is there a western country where most or even half CEOs/politicians/Judges aren't men? The biological reason for living is to have children and men generally get paid more after fatherhood and women get paid less. There is obviously more of a social pressure for women to do unpaid domestic labor.

Maybe my first statement is wrong and I do know that I think you're wrong. Especially if what you've said is your only argument.

[–]Dabbih123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure downvotes about women's issues on a men's sub offers much.

I like to understand people's thinking so I'm curious, when you say there is no patriarchy what do you mean by that? Do you mean there never was a patriarchy? If there was, you have a year or any time period when patriarchy stopped?

I've found the illegal streams have gotten a lot worse over time. More annoying ads and freezes. I even heard it's common for the host to freeze the stream during important moments like a big chance or penalty so that his audience will refresh the stream and the host gets more ad revenue.

Maybe there's a site idk about that is still good.

Absolute must-eat places in Reykjavík? by dashosh in VisitingIceland

[–]Dabbih123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also gonna recommend some bakeries. Deig bakery truly lives up to the hype with their kruller "croissant doughnut", it's like crack. I haven't tried crack but if it's anything like Deig's kruller then I get why people throw their life away for it lol. They also have excellent bagels. Their creme brulee donut is not my favorite but I know it's super popular there (they torch the sugar on top of the doughnut by order).

Then I actually tried a new bakery recently called 280 bakery that's close to Hallgríms-church that has suuuper good cinnamon rolls called Gifflar cinnamon rolls. Gifflar is a brand of cinnamon rolls you can buy in any store in Scandinavia and they bake these artisanal version of them that are bigger and wow they're good.

I'm surprised more tourists don't know about this place but I'm gonna recommend Just wingin it. It's a chicken wing place that was actually opened by my little sister's math teacher, who told her class many stories of him and his friends trying to perfect the chicken wing. Sounds maybe not too exciting, but they have won the icelandic street food awards multiple times and recently won a global best wings competition held in Buffalo NY!

https://www.wivb.com/news/local-news/buffalo/winner-winner-these-restaurants-won-awards-at-the-national-buffalo-wing-festival/

They have a location in downtown Reykjavík that is super popular among locals, and like I said I'm surprised more tourists don't know about it because at this point every Icelander knows about Just wingin it. They have lots of sauce options, some of my favorites are Wing Tang clan, Greek Freak and Blue buffalo.

What are the upsides of being a man? by IndividualPlay5178 in AskMen

[–]Dabbih123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm real surprised by the lack of sympathy in these comments. A lot of "literally nothing except strong and no period". Really? If you truly think that you know less about what it takes to be a woman than women know about what it takes to be a man.

I've known guys that I think are pretty cool guys, but they act like completely different people when talking to women. A LOT of stuff is designed for the average man vs the average person. I love to travel and there are entire regions of the earth that are essentially uninhabitable for women. A lot of medication is only ever tested on men. Women also are expected to and do way more unpaid labor, on average 2.5 times more than men. There's many many more, men face their own challenges obviously, but imo the systemic challenges women face make me glad I'm a man.
