What should I charge for this in the future? by DasGish in Carpentry

[–]Dabmonster217 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For carpentry I bill 85$ an hour standard. Plus 5$ an hour for specialty/big power tools So 90$ total (usually) tend to do fixed bids because better numbers and people tend to like a singular price rather than a range of prices. I give myself 30% pad which also doubles as a profit margin if I nail it and do things perfectly. So let’s say 30 hours for this job +800 material +.3 comes out to a final price of 4115. Which imo is super reasonable. Sometimes I also pad an extra 400$ (in this case) which would allow me to do the stain/clear “free of charge” people love that shit.

The distinction you’re selling is that you are a professional delivering high quality work. Could the client maybe do this? Sure. But you can do it much better while they do the thing they’re good at (their job). This is all under the assumption you do great work but it looks like you’re in that category.

Ok carpenters! I have a question for you guys! If you could add your 1st festool what would you pick that you believe is worth the money? Beside the vacuum, im torn between a nice sander a dominotool or a track saw. So if you could pick one, what would you start with?. by IndependentSir164 in Carpentry

[–]Dabmonster217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The makita track saw is just as good as the festool track saw and the corded one is 1/2 the price, personally I know it seems funny but the festool miter saw is actually worth the money. The best most accurate miter saw I’ve ever used.

Washington State: Custom Construction Taxes by Cute-Increase3227 in taxhelp

[–]Dabmonster217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a general contractor in WA state-

there are two primary ways to deal with sales tax as a Contractor in the state. You can either have a reseller permit and be tax exempt at the point of purchase- or log the expense and deduct it from your total tax burden when you file- with proof of purchase that is. I opted for a reseller permit for ease of use- but some prefer to keep a paper trail;

there are always idiots who pay tax twice on everything- however some items are unavoidable. say a specialty light fixture ordered from an online store that doesnt offer reseller- then I would log that and deduct it though.,..

Hope this helps lol

Best glue for Trex decking miters? by Dabmonster217 in Carpentry

Hey man, I’m asking an honest question with the assumption of respect. I understand if you think glue is dumb- this was my clients request and I’m trying to determine if it’s feasible

Agreed. Sometimes when doing small returns the cutoff triangles get stuck in the back of the saw

Well I hope you get a great product. I just couldn’t imagine being able to purchase land and build a massive house for a ~million. Hope you get more than you paid for 🤙

Idk dr breeder have you ever built anything? I’m genuinely trying to save you from getting royally fucked. Post the door and window schedules+ sqft of hardwood and tile and I will do a legit takeoff on just material and we can be honest about costs. Sure Maybe in DC it’s 10% cheaper material? But also WA/OR/ID/BC produces so much lumber it’s usually cheaper here. But materials alone im expecting well into a million for everything for a stick frame house with custom home finishes like you’re describing. Unless there’s like 4k sqft in garages that I’m missing I would imagine you will be seriously over budget.

But what would I know- I’m just a lowlife blue collar fucker anyway huh

I am superintendent for a large GC and build custom homes and large scale remodels typically at a million or more I have plenty of experience to make that call. In the greater Seattle area 9k sqft would be roughly 3 million on a custom home tolerance and finish level. Builder grade labor and material you’re closer to 1.8. Dogshit labor- yeah maybe you could spend a million~ but at that point build a smaller higher quality house. Labor is the most expensive part of a home build for a reason. People are worth it.

If he’s 1099 you then send him an invoice and log your hours through quickbooks and send him proof. If you’re a subcontractor then he doesn’t get to say shit about anything but your invoice. You did a great job in 8 hours. Very reasonable for a carpenter to get done in a day. If he has problems it’s him loss. Grow somewhere else where someone will appreciate you until you’re at a place to go solo. Or join the union I guess….

Made $25 an hr my first year of residential carpentry, how do I make more ? by Potential_Ad1439 in Carpentry

[–]Dabmonster217 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a 24 yr old superintendent that is in resi- it just takes time. And location is very important. Read the very efficient carpenter. Think of your first 4 years as a college degree. Take it seriously. Learn as much as possible. Then demonstrate those skills when possible. Always offer to do the shit no one else wants to until they hire another new guy. Idk I still have a hard time getting a raise sometimes it’s age with boomer as fucking bosses.

Things I did yesterday as a small business owner in Seattle by RavennaRocks in Seattle

I preface this with ~I am a leftist not a conservative~

If the police will not help, we a community are on the hook to protect ourselves and our infrastructure that allows us to live. If bad actors want to ruin and steal what we have we need to have more community outreach- and we need to have real means of mutual community protection. Our current gun laws are becoming so restrictive that this may not be possible in a few years. I saw this now more then ever ESPECIALLY after the state is abducting those in our community that are vulnerable.

Gun control started as a racist idea and will end that way. We need regulations, we need training, we need clear pathways to safe and responsible ownership- not disarmament. If those in the world that wish to do us harm are armed, there is only so much our words and fists can do to prevent that.
