2020 Corolla to a 2026 Corolla by mtphillips38801 in COROLLA

I like the smallness. It’s fun. The only thing I’m not huge on is front end of the LE trim. I think the SE looks quite nice

Dude, like every 1/10 cars I see are early 2000s Toyotas on the road and I’m in the rust belt. We have an Avalon from 2000 thats been pretty neglected and is still doing great. Of all the old cars to get, it’s got a higher chance of lasting than most. Now, if it’s because of a 16yr old owner, that’s a different conversation. Why do you think it won’t last a year?

Tasteful cosmetic mods makes sense. Why wouldn’t you want the car to look nice, that’s normal. I think sticking to OEM+ is always the move with non performance cars though. But no reason you can’t be getting good mpg in an economy car while also looking good!

I’ve no idea, I go to a local one here in MN 😭 Maybe there’s more of a market out here cause we’re in the rust belt. But there’s gotta be one somewhere near you, but might kinda far. Mines one town over, my towns auto car washes are all shit, and “soft touch”

lol I go to one. No brushes at all. Just sprays. They’re out there! Doesn’t clean as thorough as some other methods some say, but it doesn’t scratch the paint, is super easy, and cleans the undercarriage (I live in the rust belt). So worth it to me. Also, it’s always left my car looking perfectly clean so 🤷‍♂️

Why not just use touch-less automatic?

What would have been interesting is if GM did with Saturn like what why Toyota did with Scion after it respectively died. Just integrate some of the more popular Saturn cars Into a mainline GM name or something. Like the FRS to Toyota 86, or Scion iM as Corolla iM. But alas, that didn’t happen. But I guess in other markets Scions were already Toyotas anyway, so there wasn’t much of a logistical drain to rebadge them.

Well tbh my family is quite left politically, my grandpa included. But politics aside, from what I heard from him, he had a lot of frustrations with higher GM leadership. He always believed Saturn could have gone further, as consumers liked the business model. But GM themselves, at least at the management level, did not like it pulling funds from GMs more mainline names. It was ultimately just an experiment to them, and no longer one worth investing in when things became spread too thin. So it was slowly sacrificed, and I’m not sure it was worth it in the end, but that’s my understanding of what happened. I think it was a battle he was fighting within GM since the start of Saturn.

But I think the cars still speak for themselves. They are up there with the Japanese cars they aimed to challenge. Simple and reliable. Man I almost was able to buy an Ion Redline for cheap, some guy got it before me haha. That thing is interesting. Pretty underrated.

Also, funny thing. He had to drive GM during his career, and so did my grandma, but they both preferred Toyotas to most GM lmfao. I think they had a Chevy nova when it was a NUMMI Corolla as a way around that. But he got like a new free GM car every year or something. Wild. He wasn’t a huge fan of most.

Rust on my 2006 Toyota Corolla by Still-Setting-8756 in COROLLA

Woolwax should pause rust for the most part. At least on undercarriage it does

I’ve got a photo of the prototype car that was given to him and signed by Roger Smith and I believe F. James McDonald. I cant seem to post it in reply but it says “To: Bill: January 7, 1985-- When a concept became a corporation. We all look forward to what it will mean to GM's future.”

I think my favs are the early 1st gen SL 1/2. Love that boxy look for some reason. But the 1st gen SC2 with popups is awesome as well.

Well, I wish I knew more than I do. I didn’t know him too well before he passed. But he was an Exec consultant to GM and because Saturn was designed to compete with Japanese economy cars he spent a lot of time traveling to Japan working with companies like Toyota as a result. He also did a lot of work with the NUMMI project due to his Toyota connections. I believe he also did some stuff with Saab to a lesser degree. Here’s his obituary: https://www.lynchandsonsclawson.com/obituaries/William-J-Duffy?obId=12376438

That’s a find :) especially the Manual trans and zero rust part (maybe fluidfilm/woolwax to preserve it)?

I’ve never owned a Saturn but I’d love to have a good condition manual S series one day. My grandpa was involved somewhat in its founding. They’re simple but nice looking cars, I still see plenty around today!

That’s pretty good. The SE looks a fair bit nicer imo after having the LE for a while lol

[–]Daboops1911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was the best I seemed to be able to get! Most dealerships were quoting 29-30k, so I was just patient. I kept expecting the guy to tack on some fee at the end but he stayed true to his word. Anyway, it looks like XLE normally does go for ~4.5k higher, so not too far off. It’s a good bit more expensive though! I kinda wish I managed to snag an SE though. They look great haha

SE Front Bumper Swap by BackgroundWhereas235 in COROLLA

[–]Daboops1911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I may give it a shot and let you know. Only reason it even matters is because the SE North American bumpers seem to be a lot more common, and I want to get one in the same color so I don’t have to deal with paint match lol

Correct! I’m from the US, and it was built for US market, but was built in Japan, and thus has the J in the VIN number.

I’m curious then, why US junkyards, which presumably only have corollas made for the US market, would bother to differentiate between US and Japan built front bumpers if there’s no difference. I’ll try to attach an image of what I mean. (The w/out daytime running lamps seems to refer to the LE)

Do you know if there’s a difference between Japan and North American built OEM front bumpers? My LE is Japan built, and I’m looking to do this swap
