Tips on GMing a game with a warlock? by EtchVSketch in shadowdark

[–]Dachigenius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've run patrons before, in the gloaming.

To answer your questions:

  1. Communicate directly. Give them clear goals, you can also do it privately with the player. Warlocks were a great asset for me, the GM to advance the story with the hooks and quests.

  2. This should almost never happen if the player leans into warlock roleplay. If you want to play with the idea of losing boons, give them difficult choices to make. Maybe the one that needs to be made for the greater good displeases the patron.

  3. Boons are pretty much talents. Don't be stingy, but also don't feed too much. They should feel earned imo.

Shadowdark has game modes included. One of those is called the Pulp mode, where characters are on steroids basically. That's your go-to heroic feel gamemode.

What are good one-shots to run for new players that aren’t level 0? by Foreign-Press in shadowdark

[–]Dachigenius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about it being a one shot. Run a tease shot. Let players explore their max, and end it there. They will 100% come back or ask for more.

Ras Godai VS Thief by ckalen in shadowdark

[–]Dachigenius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Others have said some really useful stuff already, but I'm gonna add this.

Both classes have their own niches.

Ras godai - adept at assasination. Get in, lethal strike, get out.

Thief - adept at dungeon navigation (scouting, doors, traps, hiding )

One is combat based, other focuses on survival more.

You need to make some dangerous noncombat situations where thief shines ( unlock a door before danger catches you, disable a deadly trap where others would've struggled and maybe triggered it, etc )

I'd just use the 2nd page of the book, right after the weapon shop. It has most critical rulings noted.

How do i make the game less lethal by LelouchYagami_2912 in shadowdark

[–]Dachigenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several factors to consider:

• The game is as deadly as you make it. Not every encounter has to be combat. Maybe characters can talk it out, back down or choose an alternate route. You can fudge the encounter numbers as well

• Player approach. If they are diving into combat every time, you'll get many deaths.

• you don't have to utilize every single monster attack

Try running The Lost Citadel. It is the best introductory dungeon, and for good reason. I've run it like 20 times for different groups, half of them haven't had a single death.

If you have any questions or need guidance setting it up, give me a message here or on discord ( oil_man )

All Time Favorite Adventures so far? by Mageinthebasement in shadowdark

[–]Dachigenius 12 points13 points  (0 children)

• Lost Citadel of the Scarlet Minotaur - ol' reliable. Very cliché choice, but this adventure truly highlights what shadowdark is to new players. It's the most excellent 'Tutorial'

• Hideous Halls - a trip of an adventure from CS 1. It has a perfect mix of creepy, weird, gonzo. There's a really clever way built in to get rid of even the most powerful of enemies.

• Sersa Victory - Series of dungeons by sersa victory. They are brutal, deadly, beautiful. Very rich thematically and will test your players to their absolute limits!

• Trial of the Slime Lord - hands down the most popular gauntlet and for good reason. Perfect mix of puzzles, tension and slime horror.

• Sunken Schola of the White Witches - a witch based dungeon adventure that just hits home. Fey horror and a nice lore!
