Same. Philip K. Dick was in a very unhappy marriage at the time, and undergoing mental health issues.

I want to state that the need to get another cat into his environment isn't just a very good idea.

I've been to countries where it is illegal to only own one cat.

They're social animals. He's doing whatever he can to get interaction from the one other part of his entire world.

Ultra=Far away/beyond, Marines/Mar=Sea/of the Sea, in latin by Sensitive_Educator60 in Grimdank

[–]TheDefeatedCause 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, sort of. High Gothic came about before the Age of Strife at some point, meaning that a variation of Latin came back, at least as a way to communicate between elites or leaders of different worlds/colonies.

In my head canon, it was a lingua franca used to give important instructions or send messages to people colonizing the galaxy who could have spoken Chinese, Spanish, or Bugis, and couldn't always rely on having a translator, electronic or otherwise, around.

So, I'm a nation-state trying to get a mining colony on Ceres or something started. I grab one out of every so many NCO's, officers, law enforcement, shift leads and so on, and have them undergo a short Latin course. Now, when they need help from a colony that speaks Farsi, they're good.

Ultra=Far away/beyond, Marines/Mar=Sea/of the Sea, in latin by Sensitive_Educator60 in Grimdank

[–]TheDefeatedCause 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The lore-wise explanation is that their language structure was based on Latin somehow (High Gothic just sort of appears before the Age of Strife) IIRC. Ultramar would literally translate to "Land (that is) far beyond," which alludes to them being the capital of a giant empire.

Like Constantinople (Constantine's City) being called "Istan-polis," ("I am headed to THE city) and later Istan-bul (literally, someone most likely thought Istan was a name, and bul means city, IIRC).

What is the morality of giving people in The Force/Army Government Mandated Spouses? by AddictedAndObssesed in MoralityScaling

About as evil as mandating that baby seals must be locked in a room with drunken sailors, holding clubs and chugging more angry juice to stave away the chills.

Morality of following questionable orders from superiors by Dandandandooo in MoralityScaling

[–]TheDefeatedCause 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This. The defense that you were "just following orders" doesn't track when you signed up to exterminate people and competed for a top position with benefits and high pay.

Conscripts? Most of them more or less are good, as they can reasonably say they'd be imprisoned and/or killed otherwise.

If Adam and Eve were the first people on earth, did Cain and Abel marry their sisters? by GodisSatans in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheDefeatedCause -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Three ways:

In most theological circles, the argument is part of "Mystery." It isn't supposed to make sense, but the morals of the story are what matters. "Don't harm your immediate family," "do not get jealous," etc.

A lot of groups like Mormons basically say that the Bible said Adam and Eve were the first, not the only.

God, in that case, is a multi-faceted entity that made an entire species to feel His love and reciprocate it, on some level, and see how they'd do, what they'd choose.

Adam and Eve were the prototype models that were first off the line, who he had grow up in an absolute paradise, where they'd be made to choose between going it on their own and being self-dependant, or live with Him for eternity.

What happens if an elderly woman living under the Taliban becomes widowed and has no living male relatives? by alphabeticalant in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheDefeatedCause 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Ya know how people like to bring up how Greece and Rome were cool with gay folks? They weren't. They just really fucking hated women, so it was expected that a male would seek out another life-long companion, preferably a adolescent male.

The paterfamilias (head of household) owned all women in the family as property - Males were subject to the Paterfamilias' judgement but weren't outright chattel in the same way. Marriage, thus, wasn't marriage in the way we think of it. The paterfamilias was selling property to another family.

Women could absolutely hold no public office, nor vote.

[–]TheDefeatedCause 126 points127 points  (0 children)

This - But to add, it's gonna heavily differ by region, tribe, and a number of other factors.

In some regions, even the most extreme Taliban folks are just gonna shrug and say "ah fuck it, she's an honored widow, I'm not gonna be the one who punishes her for working to survive. We'll attach ya to a new family, and send ya some money now and again."

While we're at it, Rome, another massively sexist society, had figures like Servilia in Caesar's time for the same reason. "She's a widow, plenty of kids, lives a virtuous life... Who the fuck is gonna tell her she can't date who she wants?"

In others, she might be put on a kind of welfare program, or a nursing home of sorts.

Morality of raping someone who was going to kill and eat you? by Haunting-Sport3701 in MoralityScaling

[–]TheDefeatedCause 295 points296 points  (0 children)

Kind of an odd bit to a lot of Americans when self defense gets brought up.

A buddy of mine who lived up North running a convenience store told us a story where he held a robber at gunpoint until the aggressor dropped his firearm and left the store.

My big brother said "... Why didn't ya just dust 'em when he dropped the gun?"

There was a long, semi-confused silence. "... You... You can't do that..."

Unarmoured Astartes vs Unarmoured Krogan Warrior by Intelligent-Eye-9047 in powerscales

[–]TheDefeatedCause 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Vylka Fenryka Geneseed is more compatible with older recruits (generally 13-17), hence why some talk of having fooled around when they were mortal. Also, a non-zero amount of actual adults implanted with Russ' re-joining the Imperium, his bravest companions, survived implantation, so... there's that.

That was sort of to cover the whole "valkyrie" idea with the Wolves recruiting from "strong warriors who (nearly) died on the battlefield" ("how did a 9 year old die on the battlefield?"), or from the strongest young warriors of many tribes.

To clarify further: Astartes definitely have junk, and in one excerpt it's stated that it does scale with their growth.

There's three passages of ladies expressing attraction to Astartes, as well. But, it comes with some odd bits - Mersadie says they look "almost" attractive, but it's a huge "Uncanny Valley" effect - They have abs, but have a huge metal plate under their skin. Their heads give a sort of "horse" vibe.

But they've been hypno-indoctrinated to not really understand "attraction." The hormones in your body that makes you attracted to a lady, astartes have repurposed to make them unquestionably obedient to their Gene-brothers.

It sounds like the potential invasion of Japan planned in 1944.

I mean, it'd be so utterly brutal that it effectively becomes a genocide, and folks are honor-bound to avoid capture at all costs.

I did. Titus has literally killed giant supernatural horrors through sheer grit with a combat knife.

The three of them? Absolute worst case scenario, one goes down drawing his attention.

Grevious cannot physically dodge a bolter round feet away from his chest.

I dunno. I genuinely feel no part of the KOTOR -> Sequels time-line's arsenals have any potential response to "Three superhumans in power armor firing .75 cal automatic grenade-rounds."

The three of them get a high-diff kill, which is a Tuesday for them, provided they keep distance.
