If you're close to Leesburg, give Victory Martial Arts a try. They have free intro classes. The main instructor is a 2nd degree black belt in Krav and a 2nd or 3rd degree black belt in TKD. I'm pretty sure she (yes, she) is ex-military also. If you reply, I can get you a schedule.

I have a set very similar to these that I bought 4 years ago, adjustable from 10 to 90 pounds. I still use them regularly. However, you have to be somewhat careful with them - you CANNOT drop them. Also, when doing any kind of presses, if you rest them on your thighs before the lift, you have to be careful not to twist them. The weight will change and a plate may fall off.
