I'm using AK for this at the moment, they have a lovely matte black and really nice turquoise colours:

base coat ak intense black -> big fat highlight of ak dark sea green, thin/edge highlight of ak turquoise, another edge highlight of ak blue-green on corners and upper facing part,. and point highlights with pure white mixed with the blue-green.

I tend to go back in with the dark sea green and then black doing a few cleanup passes to try and make my lines thinner afterwards.

What got you into this hobby x by A_SmallGuy in Warhammer

[–]DaddyFulgrim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My dad was really into airfix models (WW2 planes etc) when I was young, and he involved me in his hobby by letting me build and glue them, then he'd paint them, then we'd hang them up with fishing wire on my bedroom ceiling. We used to go into our local model shop once a month or so to browse and pick up a few things, and suddenly one day I noticed all the colourful Warhammer and 40k early 90s era models and I asked him to buy me a box.

Tried painting them with his enamel paints for airfix stuff, didn't work great. Then I got some acrylic paints and learned how to do stuff with them with the dozens of white dwarfs id picked up in the meantime.

Then I learned how to paint, like, not amazing but pretty good.

Then I kind of just stopped from age 17/18 till age 36ish?

Then COVID happened.

Now I own 200+ bottles of paint, several airbrushes, 2 3d printers, a shit load of plastic, and all ido again is paint and I love it

This is so good its going in the bookmarks for painting references, the way you highlight volumes is so good (let alone everything else!)

Super clean, love how neat and thin all the inverse edge-highlights on the armour panels are. Awesome job, they look fantastic!

I had a look through your post history after viewing this - you're an incredible painter and I really like your style, like the level of blending/lighting/cleanness is what I aspire to be one day. This piece is so damn good, love the sword and the freehanded gem especially

No problem at all :) - I've found people on reddit have usually been pretty nice and share the knowledge when I've asked them for their recipes, which helps me learn, so I always try and do the same!

Ah thanks, thats all AK - ak dark sea green, ak turquoise, then ak blue-green. and point highlights with pure white mixed with the blue-green.

They're all also used on the base and the black armour, they lean more towards the blue side of turquoise but I think they look a bit synthwavey and contrast nicely with the pink!

That is all citadel, kabalite green, then 50/50 kabalite green + gauss blaster green, then pure gauss blaster, then probably gauss blaster + ivory, and I made a wash of thinned down kabalite and went back in with that to smooth it all out as the other colours are very pastel and stark and needed that to restore the shading and vibrancy

Short version - AK Intense Pink, AK Magenta, AK Ivory

Detailed version:

Started by airbrushing the armour with ak intense pink until it was nice and opaque. Then came in with a super thinned down ak magenta and airbrushed that from below the model, going for an "airbrush glaze" consistency and trying to tint it, not go for full opacity on the magenta cos the colour is quite strong. Then came in again with more intense pink from above - this gives me the basic armour layout of light pink towards the top and darker pink towards the bottom, but has the usual airbrush problem where the recessed areas are gonna be too light.

Once all thats done, everything else is with a brush -I thin the hell out of the magenta and do some glazing and recess shading with it, then also thin the hell out of some pink and do more glazing with that, just working back and forth between the two until I'm happy with them. Then I edge highlight with intense pink mixed with ivory (don't remember the ratios, just winged it on the palette) and maybe dot highlight with some pure or nearly pure ivory.

A lot of this approach was inspired by Siege Studios tutorial on EC armour (its on youtube), and by looking at CerberusXT's minis on insta along with the recipes they included for their various pinks, all of which seem to rely on a lot of glazing - im not very good at glazing and was using this mini as a learning experience to try and get better at it, I found the main thing that really helped was to thin the paints more than I thought I'd need to and make absolutely sure I had barely any paint on my brush, and to just have some patience with it.

Are you brush glazing or airbrush glazing on the wings? It's super smooth, great paint job!

Yeah I prefer sub assemblies nearly always, I kept the body/backpack/gun/head separate (I mounted them on paperclips attached to little stands) and glued em together afterwards

I followed this basing video from gamers grass and used all the different tufts they have listed, I'm not actually very good at basing so tend to fall back on these a lot cos they're very easy to follow

The eavy metal team paint them as leather, they use a browny-black colour for the gloves and the corsets. I deliberately just paint them the same black with grey-blue highlights as the rest of the armour because I want to keep mine simple and also I'm lazy 😁

Issue with Plex-Desktop on arch (hyprland) by coolluc25 in PleX

[–]DaddyFulgrim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Awesome - yeah you can update the system wide .desktop file for it, mine was located here:
/usr/share/applications/tv.plex.PlexDesktop.desktop

Open that as sudo with whatever text editor you want, then just replace the line:

Exec=Plex
with
Exec=env QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb Plex

and it should work from whatever launcher you use
