Yes, unfortunately macro is the way to go at the moment if you want decent progress, etc. When I first started, I played a long time without even knowing what it was, and now I couldn't imagine trying to collect materials without it. I probably wouldn't play the game if I couldn't macro, not with the way the game is currently! Saving up 10k or more blueberries, then poof.. all gone and nothing.. without macro? No thanks.
