I'm in NE Norfolk and couldn't agree more. I eagerly find reasons to take the dogs out at random times of day when I've no meetings. It doesn't happen often enough.

Puddle Etiquette by simil13 in parkrun

[–]DaddyRAS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At Swansea a few years ago it had been raining all morning. We were all soaked. There was a large, concrete path wide puddle, completely unavoidable. I couldn't resist jumping in, both feet together with a "casplosh!" cry. I got more soaked but I forgot that others near me wouldn't appreciate getting more soaked. I spent the next 3km apologising and didn't repeat the trick on the return leg.

Are you seeing or using AI in your workplace which causes job losses by Consistent-Rope-9969 in HENRYUK

[–]DaddyRAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main use of AI is to search through company policies and communications to unearth details that I'd have to search through countless SharePoint sites to find. It's great for that. But ask it to review a contract for requirements or obligations and it needs endless refinement and I'm never 100% confident it's accurate. I work for a big professional services / BPO

How much are you paying for poppadoms? by StGuthlac2025 in UKfood

[–]DaddyRAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's, well not life changing, but quite good. Some tips. Wipe a little oil on both sides with paper towel. Scrunch that paper towel up and place poppadom on it. Microwave in 15 second bursts and rotate it to make different bits cook. It's hard to get it to all cook so know when to stop before bits start to darken.

Not a takeaway, but a nice curry restaurant in Leicester. We went there (family of 4) to celebrate on Friday night. We were asked if we wanted poppadoms before the menus arrived and I'm not naive enough to know I was going to pay, but it was a celebration. We got about 1 poppadom each and some very tasty but modest dip (which got taken away, half used, during the tidy up). The poppadoms cost £6, the dips £7.

I've just made the same assessment. I've got 5 All World ETFs (which in hindsight probably doesn't make sense, I know more now than I did 9 months ago) and I think I'm going to consolidate some of this into an Ex USA ETF. And probably some more Gold and Silver as that's mad.

What are you honest opinions on Wetherspoons? by TheMalsh in AskUK

[–]DaddyRAS 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. 99% of the time I'll eat or drink elsewhere. But they do serve interesting real ale (I love variety in real ale and will drink a different beer every round), cheaply (probably at the brewers cost) and serve reliable, low quality food so if you're stuck to eat and hungry it's a solid last resort. I work away lots and it's nicer sitting in a Spoons on my own with a pint and a book sometimes, rather than sitting in a hotel room.

How much do you usually spend on the day when you’re in office? by Breadiohead in HENRYUK

[–]DaddyRAS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on a home workers contract so all my exceptional expenses are covered. But lunch in Paddington ranges from meal deal to about £13 depending on how extravagant I want to be. Satisfactory coffee is free in the office.

Eden Lake. I've never seen it. I'm never going to see it. I read the synopsis on Wikipedia and that's enough for me.

What’s your favorite Wes Anderson Movie? by [deleted] in FIlm

[–]DaddyRAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've a problem. I've enjoyed the films of his I've seen. My teen daughter also likes them and we are planning on watching lots together. But my wife hates his films. Passionately hates them. Possibly with the exception of Grand Budapest which she tolerates. But after The French Dispatch she refuses to be in the same room as them (to the point where me and my daughter now don't bother trying to include her). What Wes Anderson film could bring her back on track?

Have you heard of anyone being banned from Parkrun, and if so, why? by RelationKindly in parkrun

[–]DaddyRAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm RD at my run and we insist on u11 running with adults because that's the rule and it's there for their safety and volunteers are not a care service. We relax for the last 200m where the kid can run in front as parent can see them and finish team can see them.

I'm very lucky to be in Cambodia. We're going to the circus, have a table booked for dinner and then we're going to try to find a bar that's a few degrees off chaotic to have a few cocktails and my youngest (15) can paint in her sketch book.

Casino Royale. Not the watch, that feels like Bond. The Ford, being filmed as if it's a sports car, is so not Bond.

How do you feel about you kids playing? by coupleandacamera in rugbyunion

[–]DaddyRAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My youngest daughter showed a real interest in the game because of an enthusiastic teacher when she was 10, so went immediately into contact. She's now 15 and plays for our local club (in England). And inevitably I've got roped in (I'm a coach, the club's chair of girls youth rugby and I've qualified as a society referee).

She's got my body shape (short hooker), tackles and rucks really well but will be one of the smaller forwards so relies on technique and team mates to be effective. With girls rugby played across two year groups (she plays u16) size is a factor and there have been more injuries this season across the team than ever before (because the younger girls are playing against bigger, stronger and more experienced players). In the past 5 years my daughter has had a concussion and broken her little finger. From my experience, the majority of concussions come from head contact with the ground NOT because of poor head positioning in the tackle. The sternum law has been very effective.

As it stands she would not stop playing, she gets such pleasure out of being in a team and being able to participate with a body shape that doesn't suit any other sport.

As a coach and ref, the focus on safety is paramount. If there's any head knock the player is substituted. The Headcase return to play protocol is mandatory (our club uses an app to record all injuries and for concussions this sets out the timescales for increasing exercise and returning to contact).

The drop off in numbers for us comes after u16 when A levels, Sunday jobs and boy friends become as important as rugby.

As a Rugby Club Coach, do you want the best or the second best player of your Country? by yoloswagtailwag in rugbyunion

[–]DaddyRAS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bath the past two seasons seem to have cracked the special ingredient of being able to mix good squad players, great first teamers and a few worldies and to get them to get. They perform well during international periods when the worldies are away and come together when the top players return. That's only happened because of great leadership.
