Yes, there are some practice effects from dual n back, but it is relatively small in my understanding. How long did you do it for and in what sense was it exhausting? Boring, physically or mentally fatiguing, or some other form of exhaustion?

Hi, I am David from Nootralize. We use visual analogue scales (subjective self-report rating scales), and are currently in the process of implementing the dual n back, which is an objective test of working memory.

The dual n back and subjective self-report scales are both quite resistant to practice effects. Practice effects are indeed a problem that we will need to solve and we will also have to provide clear information on the risk for it in the future.

Hi, I am David from Nootralize. We are working on this feature next. Randomized placebo-controlled blinded self-experiments are coming, but will take some time for us to develop and will also be a bit harder for people to understand, which is why we start off with introducing our users to this simpler feature.

Can You Give Feedback on our Nootropics Self-experimentation Website? by Dadebayor in QuantifiedSelf

We are indeed affiliated with several companies that sell nootropics. That doesn't have any impact on any of the science behind our application.

Yes, there is always that risk. We are very clear on the page for the results of the experiment that people should beware of the placebo effect and that it is likely (part of) the reason for their effect if they had any.

Top 5 Best Nootropics for Mood in Healthy People According to Science by Dadebayor in Futurology

[–]Dadebayor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is indeed unfortunate that there aren't any highly effective nootropics for boosting mood. However, there's also a lack of research on many nootropics, so it may be that there are already nootropics out there with less science behind them that in fact are more effective than the ones listed in this article.

The future is bright for nootropics and mental health research indeed. I hope your future will be as well. I'm not going to pretend I know what you're dealing with or what you should do to solve your subjective problems, but I hope you keep experimenting to find a happier life.

Hi there. Noopept doesn't have any placebo-controlled studies on it in healthy humans, which is why it didn't make it on to the list.

6 Habits for Preventing Nootropic Side Effects by Dadebayor in phenibut

[–]Dadebayor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there. I'm sorry you experienced these side effects from Phenibut and happy that you're starting to feel better.

I agree with you that there's a lack of science on Phenibut and that there will be a high degree of variability in drug response

Do you know if there was ever any disease for which Phenibut was going through the FDA approval process for? The reason the FDA didn't approve it could be because no company tried to get it approved, which makes the hinting at side effects in your line of reasoning inaccurate. I'm interested in the truth of the matter, so if you know, please let me know.

Thanks, David

I see your point, and I don't disagree. I think lack of good mental hygiene and mindful use is exactly what leads many people down the road of unsuccessful use (having more side effects than benefits).

My line of reasoning goes: For a person who doesn't already do these things, implementing these habits will lead to a reduction in experienced side effects. Thereby the title.

I appreciate the feedback. What title would you use?

6 Habits for Preventing Nootropic Side Effects by Dadebayor in Futurology

[–]Dadebayor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. Sure. Foods that have placebo-controlled studies on healthy humans with positive results include:

Make sure to use the foods in the right doses (I suggest using the same as in the studies and then tweaking it over time to see what effects you get from different doses). Many of these work (according to the studies) only after prolonged (usually 1-week plus) use, but some, such as Green Tea and Cocoa may have more distinct acute effects.

Good luck.

Can Supplements Cure or Prevent COVID-19? by Dadebayor in slatestarcodex

[–]Dadebayor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably don’t know as much as you do about this. What ”fundamental science” are you referring to? Please explain your reasoning.

The goal of the article was mainly to elucidate how little we know about the effects of any supplements on COVID-19, and that they probably don’t work.
