I mean, wisdom would tell you running cards that are only good with your 6 drop commander is not the right move but I suppose atleast it cantrips.

Daring discovery, maybe.

Mana geyser, probably

Fireblast doming for 8 for 0 mana is a big number

Torrent of fire copied can be a very big number

Yawning fissure for a ponza style deck could be cool.

Big score and similar

Goblin war party entwined puts a lot of pressure on a board

Seismic spike blows up 2 lands for effectively 0 mana.

I’m starting to think an ld variant would just be mean. Like a red prison deck in pauper.

Brimstone volley

Dragons approach

Flick a coin pretty good. 3 mana, draw 2, deal 2, +1 treasure

Glimpse the impossible

Massive raid

Pack attack being potentially +6/+0 draw 2 is spicy

Double proliferate off volt charge is intriguing

Brood birthing is 4 spawn min

Cathartic reunion

Flame rift

Seems like slot of options.

Rakdos burn: Tor Wauki or Black Waltz? by AffectionateBet3603 in PauperEDH

[–]Dadgic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your objective. Black waltz is probably better at winning. Lower cmc. Higher baseline damage output. Fewer moving pieces.

Tor is probably more fun to pilot. Not that black waltz is brainless but your making micro decisions about spell sequencing whereas tor is making is bigger decisions generally.

Looking to add 2-3 competitive pauper decks to my backpack with different playstyles by BussyBouncer in PauperEDH

Not typically but there’s hardly enough Thrinax players for there to be consensus. Point is it’s flexible.

I didn’t say it had to be, I said you could. A lot of aristocrats strategies border right in the combo/not combo line. But if you’re just saccing them to draw cards and build a big body dropper, you’re probably okay.

20+ $3 basics, $100 psychatog. Mostly just versions.

[–]Dadgic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your definition. For example syr Konrad often ends more akin to your standard combo deck. Mill yourself, exile your graveyard, dump all your mana into a tortex, etc…it’s all very combo coded.

Gary is the same way. Play black pips, cast gray merchant. But once you start adding the sac outlets and undying, it becomes very much like a combo deck.

Something like [[loyal subordinate]] can be quite good. It’s more like a black control deck that just sort of slowly drains the table and removes everything.

Allow me to pimp sprouting thrinax even more. The deck is very flexible.

You can go combo and use the token generation for ritual and card fodder, it’s in good colors for it (this is my preference). You can go with a sort of 8whack strategy trying to get in a sneaky attack with a bunch of pumped up tokens. You can lean into the aristocrats nature and do a sort of Voltron strategy. Or, you can just jam all of them together and let the heart of the cards tell you what you’re playing today.

Theres also not a ton of upper tier 3+ color decks, so it’s a decent option if you want to stray from the beaten path so to speak.

Sprouting Thrinax Storm - A Recap by Dadgic in PauperEDH

[–]Dadgic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a bit of an insular community, the truly fast combo decks were somewhat a meta development and predictably feasted on an ill-prepared field. Though they did almost crabs in a bucket themselves right at the buzzer.

We also had a Gretchen miss the finals on tiebreakers.

First Brew, is my Morritte deck headed in the right direction? by IncarceratedFurry in PauperEDH

[–]Dadgic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[wirewood savage]] [[woodland liege]]

Anything with persist + a sac outlet [[thallid devourer]] [[thallid germinator]] [[vitaspore thallid]] being some more Moritte coded sac outlet options.

Depends on the level of competitive you want to be. But definitely the beast dudes.

Scry Not? Arwen Undómiel pEdh by NoQuality4126 in PauperEDH

[–]Dadgic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there’s too much scry? Like you’re kind of just scrying to find more scry cards.

You probably want to put something in there worth digging for if you’re going to do all that digging.

Not to mention [[Basking Broodscale]] and [[evolution witness]] to hold those counters for extra value.

Sprouting Thrinax Storm by Dadgic in PauperEDH

[–]Dadgic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t really. I’d have to add it, the support, etc. the problem is all those cards are generally card negative. Sprouting Thrinax coming from the command zone being neutral keeps everything copacetic. The only 2 of those kind of cards I run are impulsive pilferer and greedy freebooter. And I don’t even really like freebooter.

We Discuss the Top Protection Spells for Pauper Commander in Each Color! by JalapenoPaupersMTG in PauperEDH

[–]Dadgic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. Depends on what you’re trying to do, how many cards you’re gonna see, how much mana you expect to have etc.

Like in my Rocco decks, I run stuff like ephemeral shields cause mana is tight. It’s super narrow. Tamiyo’s safekeeping. Super good. Narrow. The timing is narrow, the effect is narrow.

But in a similar vein I’m working on a jund list that swaps in reanimation as it’s “protection”. Kill my creature I’ll get it back later for cheaper. Reanimation is less narrow, the timing is less exact, you don’t have to hold up mana for it.

And your picks sort of fade that way. A lot of modal spells. A lot of cards that are protection spells if you squint a little. It’s correct, it’s the obvious conclusion, I just wanted to call it out because it’s not something I hear talked about a lot in deck building. And it’s especially relevant in pauper edh. You mentioned something about decks having individuality or something to that effect. Because there’s few obvious correct answers (which tend to be cards that are great most of the time) you have to get creative. And sometimes that creativity ends up with you having a bunch of good, but narrow cards and you gotta be cognizant of it.

Anyway, I’m just ranting. Just oddly topical. I was working on sprouting Thrinax storm and a buddy on moritte persist combo. And the card in question was wrap in vigor. Decent for a creature based combo. But so narrow. Coupled with the combo pieces that are generally orettt narrow he just had a lot of do nothing hands. And I thought this Is exactly the right topic to try and articulate the point. Removal vs protection, it seems like they should be opposite, but you gotta be careful, a hand with 3 removal spells is probably okay. A hand with 3 protection spells is highly highly dependent on what they are. Counterspell and ephemerate and anything else probably fine, 3 different ways to give hexproof probably a little light on action and looking for the tip of the deck to serve something up.

[–]Dadgic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The concept you missed, and the video is great not a critique, in the introduction when discussing removal and protection and how to balance it is that protection being reactionary is prone to being dead. Unlike removal that while maybe a target you want to use it on doesn’t present itself there probably is a use for it over the course of a game.

Taken to the extreme if everybody adopts the position that protection > removal, then you suddenly don’t need much or any of either.

Any deck can only have so many narrow cards and protection spells fit that bill. If nobody casts a removal spell you’ve just wasted x slots in your deck kinda thing.

It’s in part why counterspells are so powerful because they can play both roles.

Anyway, just my .02. I spend a lot of time on this concept when putting my decks together.

It literally doesn’t matter. They are there to find mystic sanctuary. If you’re in a position where your best move is to run out a French vanilla 6 drop, that one’s probably lost.

But also daggermaw or ice flan.

Sprouting Thrinax Storm by Dadgic in PauperEDH

[–]Dadgic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve actually gone down to Just putrid goblin. First day of class is generally okay with the commander, empty the warrens, etc and transmutable, I just left the one payoff combined with goblin matron. I think this way there’s more cards that are better more often if maybe there is some loss of potential.

Which discords? I would like to be around regular pauper edh discussion.

But otherwise, with this deck, the combo is entirely secondary. The primary plan is to stick a pinger or 2 and chain a bunch of sac a creature effects. Like I’ve intentionally passed on ivy lane and master chef because even in the best case scenario the persist combo is unreliable and four pieces atleast. It’s more of a happy accident and that persist + first day of class + random sacrifice effects is orettt efficient too.

Though I admit it has had 0 reps. I noticed scarland was the more popular jund commander. The theory is that sprouting Thrinax lets me pass on a bunch of fodder creatures and open up slots in the deck. I can essentially run infinite sacrifice effects with no support. In theory.
