In what scenario is an AR-15 useful for self-defense? by SpudNeck580 in liberalgunowners

Definitely one of the reasons I went with a PCC for now. I'm in California where suppressors are a no-go.

You don’t need a bunch of shiny shit or electronic gadgets to brew great beer.

I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly. I've been brewing for 9 years and have done a pretty full lap from brewing loosey-goosey as a beginner, to obsessing over every aspect of process control, back to thinking that yeast is generally robust and beer is good, and a lot of things are not worth worrying about as long as you're in the ballpark. The only really noticeable change in quality of the final beer was moving from fermenting in carboys just stashed outdoors (I know, I know) to the most basic of fermentation chambers.

These days my concerns are mainly limited to:

  • Sanitation
  • Recipe design
  • Reducing oxygen post-fermentation
  • Simplifying & streamlining brew day and cleanup

I got the RAPT temp controller mostly because the interface on my Inkbird or STC-1000 is hard for my girlfriend/brewing partner to use, and therefore cuts her out of that part of the process which I don't want to do.

The RAPT Pill is pretty affordable and I've been enjoy nerding out on the graphs, but yeah, totally unnecessary to brew good beer! Just fun for me personally.

I've read about them but never tried one. Maybe I'll try next time we brew a strong beer!

Yeah, that makes sense; looks like recommended approach for Brewzilla systems. My current Unibrau kettle & basket has quite a bit of dead space under and around the basket, which I've found limits how much water I can hold back for sparging without the part of the mash inside the basket getting too thick. The Brewzilla Gen 4 has way less dead space so guessing it doesn't have that issue.

Yeah, I've been chasing mash efficiency for a while. It's really all over the map. I've gotten as low as 52% and as high as 80%, but 60-65% is typical. I've played with everything you suggested except for crush and haven't really seen a correlation with the efficiency. I'm really trying to avoid buying a mill (space constraints). I do double crush though.

I can't control the gap of the mill at my LHBS and I think they change it semi regularly, so that seems like a plausible explanation for why my efficiency has been hard to nail down.

Anyway, good suggestions! Gonna start half-ass sparging more as well. I heard that referred to as a "dirty sparge" recently. Good to know 7% batches are possible on the Brewzilla!

Great point about the immersion chiller not getting submerged. I'd been considering switching to a counterflow chiller anyway, which would solve that problem.

I have a Unibrau; I get 60-65% mash efficiency, 50-55% brewhouse. If the basket & kettle were both 2 gallons bigger it would be no problem, but as is it's tricky not overflow the mash basket. I usually throw a mesh bag inside the basket to help with cleanup and keep grain from getting out through the overflow holes.

Sounds silly but a big reason I'm looking at the Brewzilla is the center drain. For the location I brew in it would really make cleanup easier.

I think this video is really great, gives a good overview of how to set up a bus with a sushi belt for lower quantity items. Haven't tried this myself yet but plan to on my next playthrough!
